  • We study a boundary optimal control problem of the fluid flow governed by the Navier-Stokes equations. the control problem is formulated with the flow through a channel with steps. The first-order optimality condition of the optimal control is derived. Finite element approximations of the solutions of the optimality system are defined and optimal error estimates are derived. finally, we present some numerical results.

  • This paper is concerned with the penalized stationary incompressible Navier-Stokes system with the inhomogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition on the part of the boundary. By taking a generalized velocity space on which the homogeneous essential boundary condition is imposed and corresponding trace space on the boundary, we pose the system to the weak form which the stress force is involved. We show the existence and convergence of the penalized system in the regular branch by extending the div-stability condition.

  • Two-dimensional slow viscous flow on infinite half-plane past a perpendicular infinite cavity is considered on the basis of the Stokes approximation. Using complex representation of the two-dimensional Stokes flow, the problem is reduced to solving a set of Fredholm integral equations of the second kind. The streamlines and the pressure and vorticity distribution on the wall are numerically determined.

  • In this paper we prove global existence and uniqueness of axisymmetric strong solutions for the three dimensional electro-hydrodynamic model based on the coupled Navier-Stokes-Poisson-Nernst-Planck system in the exterior of a cylinder. The key ingredient is that we use the axisymmetry of functions to derive the Lp interpolation inequalities, which allows us to establish all kinds of a priori estimates for the velocity field and charged particles via several cancellation laws.

  • In this study, three-dimensional viscous flow analysis and optimization are presented for the design of a mixed-flow fan. Steady, imcompressible, three-dimensional Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes equations are used as governing equations, and standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model is chosen as a turbulence model. Governimg equations are discretized using finite volume method. Upwind difference scheme is used for the discretization of the convective term and SIMPLEC algorithm is used as a velocity-pressure correction procedure. The computational results are compared with the results obtained by TASCflow. For the numerical optimization of the design, objective function is defined as a ratio of generation of the turbulent energy to pressure head. Sweep angles are used as design variables.

  • This paper deals the study of a linear MHD pump solution used to eliminate and to avoid the dangers of the mercury appearing through pollution and contamination. The formulation of the magnetohydrodynamic phenomena is derived from Maxwell and Navier-Stokes equations are solved using the finite volume method. Simulation results highlight the performance of the pump such as the electromagnetic force, the velocity, and the pressure, the application of Ansys-Fluent software validation these results.

  • A fundamental understanding of the flow around the wind turbine is important to investigate the performance of new type of wind turbine. This study presents the simulation of three dimensional flow fields around the Darius wind turbine as an example. Incompressible Navier-Stokes equations are used for this simulation. The rotating coordinate system that rotates in the same speed of the turbine is used in order to simplify the boundary condition on the blades. Additionally, the boundary fitted coordinate system is employed in order to express the shape of the blades precisely. Fractional step method is used to solve the basic equations. Third order upwind scheme is chosen for the approximation of the non-linear terms since it can compute the flow field stably even at high Reynolds number without any turbulence models. The flow fields obtained in this study are highly complex due to the three dimensionality and are visualized effectively by using the technique of the computer graphics.

Steady, incompressible, three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations are used as governing equations, and standard k- ${\varepsilon}$ turbulence model is chosen as a turbulence model. Governing equations are discretized using finite volume method. Steepest descent method, conjugate gradient method and BFGS method are compared to determine the searching directions. Golden section method and quadratic fit-sectioning method are tested for one dimensional search. Objective function is defined as a ratio of generation rate of the turbulent kinetic energy to pressure head. Two variables concerning sweep angle distribution are selected as the design variables. Performance of the final fan designed by the optimization was tested experimentally.

  • The effect of a solute concentration difference on the osmotic transport of water through the semi-permeable membrane of a simple cell model is investigated. So far, most studies on osmotic phenomena are described by simple diffusion-type equations ignoring all fluid motion or described by Stokes flow. In our work, as the governing equations, we consider the coupled full Navier-Stokes equations which describe the fluid motion and the full transport equation that takes into account of convection and diffusion effects. A two dimensional finite difference model has been developed to simulate the velocity field, concentration field, and semi-permeable membrane movement. It is shown that the cell swells to regions of lower solute concentration due to the uneven water flux through the semi-permeable membrane. The simulation is applied on a red blood cell geometry and the relevant results are presented.
