  • Recently H1N1(swine flu) and SARS has been infected widely in the world; we have to care about germs and virus in indoor air environment. The air sterilization system investigated in this study allows occupants to turn on/off and to control the incoming air speed and direction. To predict the performance of air sterilization system without real experiment, a simulation is considered to compare and analyze the performance of the air sterilization systems in a typical office space. Multiple system parameters including volume flow rate and velocity of supply air were varied and investigated during the simulation. The investigation result shows that difference (between simulation and experiment) was about 3.5% in case of minimum air flow rate and about 0.2% in case of maximum air flow rate. The results indicate that multi-zone simulation technique can be used to predict the performance of a sterilization system in personalized office.

  • From the point of view to prevent airborne infection-related diseases such as H1N1, SARS, and MERS, an actual application of air cleaning and purification systems including technologies like UVGI has become increasingly important. Recently, an air purification system using REME (Reflective Electro Magnetic Energy) developed in the U.S. is applied for indoor air purification and sterilization technology to counteract the outbreak of new airborne infections. In this study, an air sterilization performance experiment using REME was carried out. The results verified that air sterilization performance in the case of installing a REME system in a medical center was 31%, namely the number of floating bacteria decreased by 31% after only a five-day operation. In addition, the number of culture collections in the REME operating air conditioning systems using nonpathogenic Geobacillus stearothemophilus as a biological indicator decreased maximally to 67%. A field application of REME technology will be useful to prevent airborne infection-related diseases, especially in response to public health crises due to the advent of emerging diseases.

  • The air sterilization systems are investigated experimentally in this paper. The goal is to reduce bacteria, mold and viruses in office air by using a UV sterilizer installed inside a partition panel and wall-mounted unit. These systems allow occupants to turn the system on/off and to control the incoming air speed and direction. The partition air sterilization system conditions and sterilizes the air, and then delivers the clean air into the personal task area through the partition panels, which are connected to the pressurized under-floor plenum. Room air exits through the return grills mounted on the ceiling. The wall-mounted air sterilization system sterilizes the air, and then delivers the clean air to the personal task area from the wall. In this study a full-size experimental environment is established to investigate the immunization performance of these air sterilization systems. A typical office space scale is used in this study in order to find an optimal system to achieve a sterilized healthy micro-environment. Multiple system parameters, including volume flow rate and velocity of supplied air, were regulated during the experiments. The more air contact these air sterilization systems had, the better disinfection performance. Over 90% of eradication ratios were obtained by these two air sterilization systems. The results indicate that these systems can efficiently disinfect office air contamination.

  • We produced a basic system of sterilization of nutrient solution based on the characteristics of coated filter with the visible light-reactive titanium oxide photocatalyst according to the findings of the first stage. We developed a model system with a proper number and arrangement of filter elements, the visible light-reactive titanium oxide photocatalyst according to findings from the basic performance test. Main results of this study were as followers; The ceramic filters showed the best performance of sterilization of nutrient solution. The visible light-reactive titanium oxide photocatalyst sterilized more effectively the nutrient solution under the sunlight than UV light. The sterilization performance by passing repeatedly through a few filter was more efficient than that by treating simultaneously with a large number of filters. The filter with 15ppi in pore size, 20 mm in thickness, and 3 layers in titanium oxide coating was desirable in the intensity and sterilization performance.

  • The purpose of this study was to compare dietitians' with cooks' actual sterilization performance for improving points of sanitation practices of cooking instruments and facilities in Kyonggi Province school foodservices. A total of 400 questionnaires were mailed to the dietitians and the cooks at elementary and middle schools in Kyonggi Province. Finally, 140 dietitians and 140 cooks replied by making a total of 280 replies(70%). The results of this study found that the cooks' attitudes toward the sterilization of the vegetable cutter body, multiple shelf, and distributing cart showed higher frequencies than the dietitians'. Cooks disinfected the vegetable cutter blade, multiple shelf, distributing cart, cook's aprons, and 'L' transporting cart better than dietitians' guides expected. In the sterilization method, cooks performed better than indicated when cooking with rubber gloves. The most difficult thing in dietitians' managing sterilization was the lack of cooking facilities and instruments. They strongly demanded the detailed explanatory notes according to their own Cities and Provinces and the circumstantial manual of disinfection parts in School Foodservice Sanitary Management Guide. There were possibilities of food-poisoning, infection and safety incidents due to the budgetary shortage of cooking facilities and instruments.

  • Objectives: Non-traditional materials are used for mask construction to address personal protective equipment shortages during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Reusable masks made from surgical sterilization wrap represent such an innovative approach with social media frequently referring to them as "N95 alternatives." This material was tested for particle filtration efficiency and breathability to clarify what role they might have in infection prevention and control. Methods: A heavyweight, double layer sterilization wrap was tested when new and after 2, 4, 6, and 10 autoclave sterilizing cycles and compared with an approved N95 respirator and a surgical mask via testing procedures using a sodium chloride aerosol for N95 efficiency testing similar to 42 CFR 84.181. Pressure testing to indicate breathability was also conducted. Results: The particle filtration efficiency for the sterilization wrap ranged between 58% to 66%, with similar performance when new and after sterilizing cycles. The N95 respirator and surgical mask performed at 95% and 68% respectively. Pressure drops for the sterilization wrap, N95 and surgical mask were 10.4 mmH2O, 5.9 mmH2O, and 5.1 mmH2O, respectively, well below the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health limits of 35 mmH2O during initial inhalation and 25 mmH2O during initial exhalation. Conclusions: The sterilization wrap's particle filtration efficiency is much lower than a N95 respirator, but falls within the range of a surgical mask, with acceptable breathability. Performance testing of non-traditional mask materials is crucial to determine potential protection efficacy and for correcting misinterpretation propagated through popular media.

  • In this paper, we design, fabricate, and test the performance of a cabin filter with LED modules of composite wavelengths containing UV-A and UV-C. Germs and air farms of the manufactured cabin filter confirmed sterilization capability in the sterilization test, and special chambers were manufactured to verify organic material decomposition capability in the organic compound decomposition test. Using colkates as photocatalytic was proved to be superior to using metal mash. The sterilization and air purification capabilities of the cabin filter produced throughout this study were verified through a similar environmental test.

  • Plasma ozone is utilized in a variety of applications in the field of sterilization due to its high sterilization performance. Dielectric materials used in DBD(dielectric barrier discharges) are mainly polymer, quartz and ceramics. These dielectric layers have the advantage of limiting the amount of supplied electron charge and allowing plasma to occur evenly on the surface of dielectric. Actually, the target or environment for sterilization is often a complex structure, so research and academic study are needed by utilizing the concept of space sterilization. In this study, the device is applied to generate DBD plasma at atmospheric pressure for disinfection due to the effectiveness in producing radicals and ozone. The generator of plasma ozone is a basic structure of dielectric barrier discharge by placing ceramic tube dielectrics and stainless steel electrical conductors at regular intervals. Various applications can be developed based on the proposed design method. Plasma ozone generation for space sterilization device is recognized as an excellent sterilization device. Through the design and verification of the device, we intend to establish an optimal design of the spatial sterilization device and provide the basis data for sterilization applications.

  • Recently, the use of UVC lamps inside building air-conditioning system has been increasing in both medical and nonmedical buildings for the control of environmental microorganisms. In the present study, irradiance performance test of UVC lamp was carried out and surface sterilization effect of UV ray was investigated by using UV ray irradiation experimental chamber and pilot system. Experimental results show that the effective irradiance of UVC lamp is strongly dependent on air velocity and temperature with exception of relative huminity in air-conditioning system. An individual microbiological kill effectiveness experiment also shows that the fractional kill of two microbiological samples such as E. Coli and Legionella is roughly the same as the estimated fractional kill in the case of chamber test and pilot system test.
