Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate differences in gait parameters and symmetry between walking speed by using the Froude number and preferred walking speed. Method: Fifty adults (age: $21.0{\pm}1.7years$, body weight: $71.0{\pm}9.2kg$, height: $1.75{\pm}0.07m$, leg length: $0.89{\pm}0.05m$) participated in this study. Leg length-applied walking speed was calculated by using the Froude number, defined as Fr = ${\upsilon}^2$/gL, where v is the velocity, g is the gravitational acceleration, and L is the leg length. Video data were collected by using eight infrared cameras (Oqus 300, Qualysis, Sweden) and the Qualisys Track Manager software (Qualisys, Sweden), with a 200-Hz sampling frequency during two-speed walking (preferred walking speed [PS] and leg length-applied walking speed [LS]) on a treadmill (Instrumented Treadmill, Bertec, USA). The step length, stride length, support percentage, cadence, lower joint angle, range of motion (ROM), and symmetry index were then calculated by using the Matlab R2009a software. Results: Step and stride lengths were greater in LS than in PS (p < 0.05). The right single-support percentage was greater in LS than in PS (p < 0.05). The hip joint angle at heel contact and toe-off were greater in LS than in PS (p < 0.05). The hip and knee joint ROM were greater in LS than in PS (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Based on our findings, we suggest that increased walking speed had a significant effect on step length, stride length, support percentage, and lower joint ROM.
Background: Although symmetry of spatio-temporal parameter and center of pressure (COP) shift during walking is associated with knee adduction moment, research on clinical association with knee osteoarthritis (OA)-related knee pain and functional scores is lacking. Objects: The aims were 1) to compare symmetry of gait parameters and COP-shift in patients with unilateral knee OA and pain and matched controls, and 2) to investigate the relationship between symmetry of gait parameters and COP-shift, and clinical measures. Methods: Female subjects (n = 16) had with unilateral radiological knee OA and pain. Healthy controls (n = 15) were age-matched to OA group. Symmetry of foot rotation, step length, stance and swing phase, lateral symmetry of COP and anterior/posterior symmetry of COP during walking was assessed. To assess the clinical variables, pain intensity, pain duration and function using Knee Osteoarthritis Outcome Survey (KOOS) subscales were collected. We compared symmetry between groups using Mann-Whitney U-test or independent t-test. Relationships between clinical measures and symmetry index measured using Spearman's correlation test. Statistical significance was set at α = 0.05. Results: Knee OA group showed significantly greater values of only lateral symmetry of COP (p < 0.01) than healthy group. Values of lateral symmetry of COP had moderate or strong correlation significantly with the intensity of knee pain, pain duration, and scores of all KOOS subscales (p < 0.01). Conclusion: Patients with unilateral knee OA and pain showed more asymmetry of lateral COP-shift during walking compared with matched healthy controls. In addition, larger asymmetry of lateral COP-shift has the moderate or strong association with worse of knee pain, worse in KOOS scores and longer duration of knee pain. Asymmetry of lateral COP-shift during walking may be one of the characteristics of unilateral knee OA as the compensatory strategy response to unilateral OA of the knee.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of treadmill walking training using the metronome on the gait pattern. METHODS: A total of 33 healthy persons were studied consisting of 17 female and 16 male in the 20-30 age group. A gait analysis program was installed on a treadmill with a built - in gait analysis sensor and laptop. After 9 minutes of treadmill walking, gait analysis was performed for 1 minute. The mean values of the differences in the step length, angle of COP, separation line standard deviation and step force of the lower legs affecting walking symmetry were calculated for treadmill walking and treadmill walking using the metronome. The Shapiro-Wilk test was used to test the normality of the collected data and a paired t-test was performed to analyze the difference in walking before and after using the metronome. RESULTS: As a result of the analysis, the mean of difference between the measured values of the bilateral lower extremity for step length, angle of COP, separation line standard deviation and step force were statistically significant before and after treadmill walking using the metronome. CONCLUSION: Therefore, the treadmill walking training using the metronome is effective in decreasing the difference in the foot width, gait angle, gait distribution, and foot pressure. Because of this, the treadmill walking training using the metronome has a significant effect on walking symmetry among the elements for correct walking, which is a means for enabling efficient and continuous walking.
In this paper we develop a new theory of adjoint and symmetric method in the class of general implicit one-step fixed-stepsize methods. These methods arise from simple and natral def-initions of the concepts of symmetry and adjointness that provide a fruitful basis for analysis. We prove a number of theorems for meth-ods having these properties and show in particular that only the symmetric methods possess a quadratic asymptotic expansion of the global error. In addition we give a very simple test to identify the symmetric methods in practice.
This paper presents the method for the decision of eye states using the eye blink in video sequences. The entire procedure consists of two steps: in the first step, the accurate eye position is found in the input image by using symmetry information of faces and projection, and in the second step, the eye open/close state is decided by the horizontal and vertical projection. The method in this paper is also used for detecting drivers' fatigue in the drowsiness detection system.
The Smoluchowski equation with a step potential is solved in one-dimensional case and three-dimensional case with spherical symmetry. Exact analytic expressions for the solution and the remaining probability are obtained in one-dimensional case for the reflecting boundary condition and the long time behavior of the remaining probability is compared with the earlier work. In three-dimensional case, only the long time behavior is evaluated. More general case with the radiation boundary condition is also investigated and the results are shown to approach correct limits of the reflecting boundary condition.
Uniformity of critical currents of YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7}$ step-edge Josephson junctions on SrTiO$_3$(100) substrates have been studied at various step-line angles. 15 identical junctions were made in series on each substrate that has a long straight step-edge line. Step-line angles studied were 0$^{\circ}$, 15$^{\circ}$, 30$^{\circ}$, and 45$^{\circ}$with respect to the crystal major axes of the substrate. Scattering of junction critical currents among the junctions on the same substrate increased with the step-line angle. Current-voltage curves showed standard resistively-shunted-junction (RSJ) characteristics in most of the 0$^{\circ}$junctions. However, the number of junctions showing RSJ behavior decreased with increasing step-line angle. Variations of detailed microstructure of the step-edge among junctions, which are coupled with the d-wave symmetry of YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7}$, are believed to be the main cause for the nonuniformity in the critical current.ent.
Objective: Falls are defined as contact of the body with the floor after losing balance during activities of daily living. Falls commonly occur among the elderly, and stroke patients in particular are at a high risk of falling. The purpose of this study was to investigate the changes of temporal and spatial gait parameters and gait symmetry according to experience falls in post-stroke patients. Design: Cross-sectional study. Methods: Fifty three patients with stroke were recruited on a voluntary basis from the rehabilitation unit, who currently undergoing physical therapy. All participants were asked to answer questions regarding the frequency of falls in the past 1 year. Fifty-three patients with stroke were allocated 2 groups according to experienced falls: stroke with falls (n=26) during past 1 year and stroke without falls (n=27). The spatial and temporal gait parameters and gait symmetry ratio were measured using GAITRite system. Results: The spatial gait parameters and the temporal gait parameters were significantly different between the stroke with falls group and the stroke without falls group (p<0.05). Furthermore, step length was the only significantly different among symmetry ratio (p<0.05). Conclusions: Experience of falls can lead to impairment of gait ability in stroke patients. This result is expected to be used as a basic data for rehabilitation program development to prevent a fall of post-stroke patients.
$BiMnO_3$ has been a promising candidate as a magnetoelectric multiferroic while there have been many controversial reports on its ferroelectricity. The detailed analysis of its film growth, especially the growth of thin film having monoclinic symmetry has not been reported. We studied the effect of miscut angle, the substrate surface, and film thickness on the symmetry of $BiMnO_3$ thin film. A flat $SrTiO_3$ (110) substrate resulted in a thin film with three domains of $BiMnO_3$ and 1 degree miscut in the $SrTiO_3$ (110) substrate resulted in dominant domain preference in the $BiMnO_3$ thin film. The larger miscut resulted in a nearly perfect detwinned $BiMnO_3$ film with a monoclinic phase. This strong power of domain selection due to the step edge of the substrate was efficient even for the thicker film which showed a rather relaxed growth behavior along the $SrTiO_3$ [1-10] direction.
This paper presents a method of calculation of the stresses, the strains and the deflections due to welding in L shape and in T shape. Using step by step method of plasticity and establishing the equilibrium conditions in section, we calculated thermal stresses and strains during welding and in the final step of calculation we got the residual stresses, strains and the deflections due to welding. Also we measured the stresses and the strains with hole-drilling method and compared the results with the method of calculation presented in this paper. Because of its symmetry of section, the deflection due to welding in T shape is generally much less than that in L shape. The residual stresses are tensile in welded joints and HAZ, and compressive in base metal as butt welding of plates, but the compressive stresses in base metal decrease repidly as the points are away from welded joint except horizontal plates of T shape. The theoretical method of calculaiton presented in this paper coincides faily well with the experiment.
