In this study, surface performance evaluation was conducted according to the fiber and surface finishing technique of the exterior material using Ultra High Performance Concrete(UHPC), whitch is spotlighted as a highly durable exterior material. As a result of outdoor exposure, the initial performance of the UHPC Panel using organic fibers was maintained without being affected by the surface finishing technique. In the specimen using steel fiber, the surface performance was maintained when the water repellent treatment was performed in the plain specimen, but fiber corrosion occurred in the specimen to which the surface finishing technique was applied.
The concrete lining of a tunnel constructed by NATM used to be regarded as facing material which does not support any load from the surrounding ground. But the recent appraisal of the decrepit tunnels revealed that rockbolts and shotcrete deteriorate with time resulting in loss of supporting capability. Consequently, concrete lining has to support part of the load which used to be supported by rockbolts and shotcrete, and thus should be regarded as the final supporting structure in a tunnel. One of the common, and perhaps the most serious problem in concrete lining is the longitudinal cracks taking place at the tunnel crown. The longitudinal cracks, mostly related to the construction procedures, can be developed by many reasons such as the lack of thickness, wrong materials, bad curing environment, and excessive external forces. Many efforts has been made to control and suppress these cracks but efficient and economic way is yet to be found. For efficient crack control in concrete lining, reinforcement by composite fibers, which is the mixture of steel fiber and nylon fiber, is suggested in this study.

Mode II fracture toughness ($K_{IIc}$) of fiber reinforced concrete (FRC) has been widely investigated under various patterns of test specimen geometries. Most of these studies were focused on single type fiber reinforced concrete. There is a lack in such studies for hybrid fiber reinforced concrete. In the current study, an experimental investigation of evaluating mode II fracture toughness ($K_{IIc}$) of hybrid fiber embedded in high strength concrete matrix has been reported. Three different types of fibers; namely steel (S), glass (G), and polypropylene (PP) fibers were mixed together in four hybridization patterns (S/G), (S/PP), (G/PP), (S/G/PP) with constant cumulative volume fraction ($V_f$) of 1.5 %. The concrete matrix properties were kept the same for all hybrid FRC patterns. In an attempt to estimate a fairly accepted value of fracture toughness $K_{IIc}$, four testing geometries and loading types are employed in this investigation. Three different ratios of notch depth to specimen width (a/w) 0.3, 0.4, and 0.5 were implemented in this study. Mode II fracture toughness of concrete $K_{IIc}$ was found to decrease with the increment of a/w ratio for all concretes and test geometries. Mode II fracture toughness $K_{IIc}$ was sensitive to the hybridization patterns of fiber. The (S/PP) hybridization pattern showed higher values than all other patterns, while the (S/G/PP) showed insignificant enhancement on mode II fracture toughness ($K_{IIc}$). The four point shear test set up reflected the lowest values of mode II fracture toughness $K_{IIc}$ of concrete. The non damage defect concept proved that, double edge notch prism test setup is the most reliable test to measure pure mode II of concrete.
Optical fibers, for splice, are stripped of their plastic coatings with a plastic stripper and cut off at the end. Therefore, stripped fibers often receive accidental damages and sustain small flaws or cracks. As a result, the breaking strength of a fiber splice made under normal conditions is reduced to about 0.4∼1 ㎏ on the average, nearly one-tenth of the fiber's strength. This makes it necessary to reinforce the splice. One of the most practical and reliable methods for optical fiber splicing is fusion splicing, comprising the steps of tripping the plastic coatings from the two fiber ends to be splice, placing the two bare fiber ends in an end-to-end position, and of fusion splicing, such as are fusion. Generally, steel bar (SB) sleeve is used to reinforce this fusion-splicing region. However, this type of sleeve has a critical defect to keep optical lose after bent by a sudden load. New type of composite spring (CS) sleeve is developed to make up for the weak points in the SB sleeve. This sleeve has an effect on restoration to the original state after eliminating the bending load. The optical spectrum analyzes results show the availability of reinforcement for the fusion splicing optical fiber using small diameter composite springs under the various loading conditions.

An importance of infrastructures' protection against crash or blast loading has been an emerging issue as structures are becoming much bigger and population densities in downtown are growing up. However, there exists no such a standard to evaluate the protection performance of construction material itself. Prior to building standards for protection assessment techniques, this study performed gas-gun propelled projectile impact tests with series of contact-type monitoring systems to investigate the applicability of each sensing type. Through the impact tests, failure modes and protection performances of both normal concrete and UHPC (Ultra High Performance Concrete) reinforced by steel fibers were also evaluated. The results showed that LVDT could be applicable for the impact test among contact-type sensors and UHPC with fibers had a remarkable potential to improve protection against impact loading.

Fiber is an important ingredient in strain-hardening cementitious composite (SHCC), which can control fracture of cementitious composite by bridging action. The properties of reinforcing fiber, as tensile strength, aspect ratio and elastic modulus, have great effect on the fracture behavior of SHCC. But SHCC has serious problem as drying shrinkage because silica powder is used to make SHCC in order to improve bond strength between reinforcing fibers and cement matrix. Therefore, curing method (period and temperature) is very important for SHCC to show high tensile performance. a variety of experiments have being performed to access the performance of SHCC recently. This research emphasis is on the mechanical properties of SHCC made in Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), Polyethylene (PE) fibers and steel cord (SC), and how curing method affects the composite property, and ultimately its strain-hardening performance.

Zr-based amorphous alloy matrix composites reinforced with stainless steel (STS) and tantalum continuous fibers were fabricated without pores or defects by a liquid pressing process, and their quasi-static and dynamic deformation behaviors were investigated by using a universal testing machine and a Split Hopkinson pressure bar, respectively. The quasi-static compressive test results indicated that the fiberreinforced composites showed amaximum strength of about 1050~1300 MPa, and its strength maintained over 700 MPa until reaching astrain of 40%. Under dynamic loading, the maximum stresses of the composites were considerably higher than those under quasi-static loading because of the strain-rate hardening effect, whereas the fracture strains were considerably lower than those under quasi-static loading because of the decreased resistance to fracture. The STS-fiber-reinforced composite showed a greater compressive strength and ductility under dynamic loading than the tantalum-fiber-reinforced composite because of the excellent resistance to fracture of STS fibers.

The main objective of this paper is to study vibration of sandwich open cylindrical panel with damaged core and FG face sheets based on three-dimensional theory of elasticity. The structures are made of a damaged isotropic core and two external face sheets. These skins are strengthened at the nanoscale level by randomly oriented Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and are reinforced at the microscale stage by oriented straight fibers. These reinforcing phases are included in a polymer matrix and a three-phase approach based on the Eshelby-Mori-Tanaka scheme and on the Halpin-Tsai approach, which is developed to compute the overall mechanical properties of the composite material. Three complicated equations of motion for the panel under consideration are semi-analytically solved by using 2-D differential quadrature method. Several parametric analyses are carried out to investigate the mechanical behavior of these multi-layered structures depending on the damage features, through-the-thickness distribution and boundary conditions. It is seen that for the large amount of power-law index "P", increasing this parameter does not have significant effect on the non-dimensional natural frequency parameters of the FG sandwich curved panel. Results indicate that by increasing the value of isotropic damage parameter "D" up to the unity (fully damaged core) the frequency would tend to become zero. One can dictate the fiber variation profile through the radial direction of the sandwich panel via the amount of "P", "b" and "c" parameters. It should be noticed that with increase of volume fraction of fibers, the frequency parameter of the panels does not increase necessarily, so by considering suitable amounts of power-law index "P" and the parameters "b" and "c", one can get dynamic characteristics similar or better than the isotropic limit case for laminated FG curved panels.

In this study, the fiber blending ratio and strain rate effect on the tensile properties synergy effect of hybrid fiber reinforced cement composite was evaluated. Hooked steel fiber(HSF) and smooth steel fiber(SSF) were used for reinforcing fiber. The fiber blending ratio of HSF+SSF were 1.5+0.5, 1.0+1.0 and 0.5+1.5vol.%. As a results, in the cement composite(HSF2.0) reinforced with HSF, as the strain rate increases, the tensile stress sharply decreased after the peak stress because of the decrease in the number of straightened pull-out fibers by increase of micro cracks in the matrix around HSF. When 0.5 vol.% of SSF was mixed, the micro cracks was effectively controlled at the static rate, but it was not effective in controlling micro cracks and improving the pull-out resistance of HSF at the high rate. On the other hand, the specimen(HSF1.0SSF1.0) in which 1.0vol.% HSF and 1.0vol.% SSF were mixed, each fibers controls against micro and macro cracks, and SSF improves the pull-out resistance of HSF effectively. Thus, the fiber blending effect of the strain capacity and energy absorption capacity was significantly increased at the high rate, and it showed the highest dynamic increase factor of the tensile strength, strain capacity and peak toughness. On the other hand, the incorporation of 1.5 vol.% SSF increases the number of fibers in the matrix and improves the pull-out resistance of HSF, resulting in the highest fiber blending effect of tensile strength and softening toughness. But as a low volume fraction of HSF which controlling macro crack, it was not effective for synergy of strain capacity and peak toughness.
Ultra-high strength concrete which have 100 MPa compressive strength or higher can be developed applying RPC(Reactive Powder Concrete). Preventing brittle failure under compression and tension, ultra-high strength concrete usually use the steel fibers as reinforcements. For the effective use of steel fiber reinforced ultra-high strength concrete, estimation of tensile strength is very important. However, there are insufficient research results are available with no relation between them. Therefore, in this study, correlation between compressive strength and tensile strength of ultra-high strength concrete was investigated by test and statistical analysis. According to test results, increasing tendency of tensile strength was also shown in the range of ultra-high strength. Evaluation of test results of this study and collected test results were carried out. Using 284 splitting test specimens and 265 flexural test specimens, equations suggested by previous researchers cannot be applied to ultra-high strength concrete. Therefore, using database and test results, regression analysis was carried out and we suggested new equation for splitting and flexural tensile strength of steel fiber reinforced ultra-high strength concrete.
