  • Recently, many strengthening methods are developed and used to rehabilitate existing structure. One of the popualr methods is the strengthening with steel plate. But steel plate have a defect that is a debondig at the end of the steel plate due to stress concentration. The objective of this paper is an experimental study for improving bonding properties of a strengthening plate. The two normally reinforced beams and ten strengthened beams steel plate, which has various notches were tested. The test results show that the notches of strengthening plate improve post-yield behavior significantly compared. It is proved that the notch in a strengthening plate increase of ulimate strength after the yield strength 9% more than ordinary strengthening method.

  • In a super-tall building construction, thick and large-sized embed plates are usually used to connect mega structural steel members to RC core wall or columns by welding a gusset plate on the face of the embed plate with T-shape. A large amount of heat input accumulated by weld passes causes the plates to expand or deform. In addition, the temperature of concrete around the plates also could be increased. Consequently, cracks and spalls occur on the concrete surface. In this study, the effect of weld heat on embed plates and 80MPa high strength concrete is investigated by considering weld position (2G and 3G position), edge distance, concrete curing time, etc. Measured temperature of the embed plates was compared with the transient thermal analysis results. Finally, push-out tests were performed to verify and compare the shear studs capacity of the embed plate with design requirement. Test result shows that the shear capacity of the plate is reduced by 14%-19% due to the weld heat effect and increased as the concrete curing time is longer.

  • Concrete can be defective for several reasons, including an inadequate design, material selection of workmanship, failure to appreciate the hazards associated with prevailing enviromental conditions. Concrete can also deteriorate or be damaged in use. Thus, it is necessary to evaluate the safety of existing concrete strucutres. On the basis of these reasons, they must be performed for repair or rehabilitation. Presently, strengthening methods of R/C structure used in Korea, are an enlargement of concrete member, strengthening with steel plate or CFRP on the R/C structure. It has been widely estabilished that strengthening effect of CFRP is superior to steel plate in terms of it's lighter unit weight and higher tensile strength. But there are no construction results of CFRP on the civil R/C structure in Korea. The strengthening design technique with CFRP, it's const겨ction, and it's strengthening effect for deteriorated R/C rahmen bridge is introduced in this paper.

  • In this study, out-of-plane flexural test was performed to analyze behavior properties for a beam specimen which imitated a structure with connection member between reinforced concrete and steel plate concrete part. Tie bars between a upper and a lower steel plate, and tie wide flange shapes between upper and lower ribs were designed to prevent the steel plate or the ribs from breakaway in the connection of the specimen. As a result of the test, ductile failure behavior of the specimen and the functionality of the tie members were conformed as originally intended. Also, tension tests were performed to evaluate the design appropriateness of two specimens produced to anchor and connect mechanically #14 bars. The two test results showed that the anchorage connection system behaves in elastic limit during the main bars yielded, and the integrity of the designed system was verified.

  • Current study on the buckling analysis of steel plate in composite structures normally focuses on applying finite element method to derive the buckling stress. However, it is time consuming, computationally complicated and tedious for general use in design by civil engineers. Therefore, in this study an analytical study is conducted to predict the buckling behavior of steel plates in composite structures. Hand calculation method was proposed based on energy principle. Novel buckling shapes with biquadratic functions along both loaded and unloaded direction were proposed to satisfy the boundary condition. Explicit solutions for predicting the critical local buckling stress of steel plate is obtained based on the Rayleigh-Ritz approach. The obtained results are compared with both experimental and numerical data. Good agreement has been achieved. Furthermore, the influences of key factors such as aspect ratio, width to thickness ratio, and elastic restraint stiffness on the local buckling performance are comprehensively discussed.

  • The primary object of the paper is to understand the compressive buckling characteristics of steel-concrete structures through the finite element analysis. The buckling pattern, compressive strength and stiffness of the steel plate concrete structures were investigated by the FEM analysis using the variations of B/t ratios and stud pitches. The investigation was focused on steel plate concrete structures with and without ribs placed on the surface of steel plates. The results of the FEM analysis were compared with the previous results from the theoretical equations. Conclusively, the buckling of the steel plate concrete structures occurred in the transverse direction of the loading direction. The stiffness of the steel plate concrete structure with ribs is greater than the one without the stiffened rib. The compressive strength in the FEM analysis is similar to that of JEAG 4681 and it showed 20% greater value than that of the proposed equations.

  • Strengthening of existing concrete structures is a major concern in recent years as the number of degraded structures increases. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the static and fatigue behavior of reinforced concrete (RC) beams strengthened with steel plates. To this end, a comprehensive test program has been set up and many series of strengthened beams have been tested. The major test variables include the plate thickness, adhesive thickness, and the shear-span to depth ratio. The test results indicate that the separation of plates is the dominant failure mechanism even for the full-span-length strengthened beams with steel plate. The theoretical ultimate load capacities for strengthened beams based on the full composite action of concrete beam and steel plate are found to be larger than the actual measured load capacities. The strengthened beams exhibit more dominant shear cracking as the shear-span to depth ratio decreases. The ultimate capacity of strengthened beams increases slightly with the increase of adhesive thickness, which may be caused by the late initiation of plate separation in the beams with thicker adhesive. A realistic concept of ductility for plate-strengthened beams is proposed in this study. It is seen that the strengthened beams show relatively low ductility compared with unstrengthened beams. The present study indicates that the strengthened beams exhibit much higher fatigue resistance than the unstrengthened beams. The increase of deflections of strengthened beams according to the number of load cycles is much smaller than that of unstrengthened beams. The present study provides very useful results for the realistic application of plate-strengthening method in reinforced concrete structures.

  • Steel plate concrete (SC) structure has been developed as a new structural type. Rational damping value shall be determined for the seismic design of SC structure. This study evaluated damping ratio of SC structure through experiments. For the study, a SC shear wall specimen was constructed and dynamically tested on the shaking table. Acceleration time history responses measured from testing were converted to the transfer functions and analyzed by using experimental modal analysis technique. The structural damping ratio of the specimen was identified as 4% to critical. Considering the shaking table test was performed at the excitation level corresponding to the low stress level of the specimen, 4% could be suggested as a structural damping for design of SC structure for operating basis earthquake.

  • The paper is presented experimental study results on bond stress between profiled steel and concrete in Profiled SPC(Profiled Steel Plate Concrete) rectangular steel tubes through an experimental program in which 13 pull-out specimens were tested. Advantages and class of composite members and current problems of construction work are noted, past research of PSSC is described. An experimental study is described and evaluated. The bond capacity is interrelated with slip at the steel concrete interface. The factors influencing the mechanism of bond stress transfer were the cross section shape, length/diameter, diameter/thickness and environmental parameters (temperature, moisture). The results of experimental program indicated that the force transfer could be characterized into two regions The first region was governed by bond with no relative slip between the profiled steel and concrete. The second region occurs after the chemical debonding. Bond stress transfer in this region was governed by frictional resistance between profiled steel and concrete and cross section shapes. The important factors influencing the magnitude of frictional resistance are the profiled steel shapes, length/diameter and environmental parameters. (temperature, moisture)

  • Unlike the structure which has a homogeneous material property, a composite structure is coupled with materials which have different properties, namely, steel and concrete. At actual modeling, the real behavior cannot be predicted without consideration of those material characteristics. Therefore, by putting the interface element between concrete and steel, a slip of steel and concrete is made predictable. Interface element can be used properly not by an ordinary constitutive relation, but by a non-linear constitutive relation considering actual adhesion and slip. A contact surface between plate-shape steel box and concrete is described by using this interface element. Furthermore, because the general 8 node conforming element is inappropriate for describing a bending buckling behavior of steel box, the EAS(Enhanced Assumed Strain) solid-shell element is used to describe a bending behavior of plate-shape steel box.
