  • As the operating conditions in a supercritical oxidation reactor are set in high temperature with high pressure causing a reactor suffering from the harsh circumstances. It means the reactor adopts itself with Fe-Cr alloy in acidic atmosphere with low pH value and Ni alloy in basic atmosphere with high pH value due to its superior corrosion resistance. The study, whose target waster water is pertinent to the latter part, has selected Ni alloy such as ostenite type stainless steel 304 and 316, superstainless steel AL6XN, Inconel 625, MAT 21, and titanium Gr. 5 in order to measure corrosion resistance against those samples under the same conditions of temperature and pressure applied for a supercritical oxidation reactor. The result shows the identifiable difference in corrosion resistance by observing the surface states through a scanning probe microscope as well as measuring the weight loss through making the samples above deposited in wastewater for two-week and four-week stay. The purpose of this corrosion experiment is to identify the most corrosion-resistant material among sample species pre-selected according to pH concentration of wastewater in pursue of applying for a reactor exposed to the extreme corrosion environment. It is because such a reactor made of a verified material enables to safeguard a stable operation under the supercritical wastewater processing facility.

  • In the recent construction industry, Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymers(CFRPs) have been highly considered as innovative strengthening materials for civil structures due to their superior material properties. This paper is to offer design data and strengthening efficiency of reinforced concrete beams strengthened with CFRP Plate. Static tests were carried out to evaluate failure modes and strengthening capacity. Displacements and strains of steel and CFRP plates were obtained and analyzed through a series of fatigue tests. Also, Those evaluated the energy dissipation. Results of the tests showed increase in strengthening ratios caused debonding failure at the end of beams. For the beams wrapped with CFRP sheets around the end of the plates, debonding failure mode that was induced from flexural cracks was indicated. Through the fatigue tests, it was observed that displacements, strains of steel and CFRP plates converged into certain values. It is also proved that the beams strengthened with CFRP plates are able to resist fatigue loading under serviceability.

  • In the buildings, the systems of structures are influenced by the gravity load changes due to room alteration or construction stage. This paper proposes a system identification method establishing mass as well as stiffness to parameters in model updating process considering mass change in the buildings. In this proposed method, modified genetic algorithm, which is optimization technique, is applied to search those parameters while minimizing the difference of dynamic characteristics between measurement and FE model. To search more global solution, the proposed modified genetic algorithm searches in the wider search space. It is verified that the proposed method identifies the system of structure appropriately through the analytical study on a steel beam structure in the building. The comparison for performance of modified genetic algorithm and existing simple genetic algorithm is carried out. Furthermore, the existing model updating method neglecting mass change is performed to compare with the proposed method.

  • Many research efforts on the effect of nitrogen on the corrosion resistance of stainless steels have been reported, but little research has been conducted on the effect of nitrogen for the weldment of stainless steels by the seal-weld method. Therefore, this work focused on the determining the corrosion resistance of tube/tube sheet mock-up specimen for sea water condensers, and elucidating the effect of shielding nitrogen gas on its resistance. The pitting corrosion of autogenously welded specimen propagated preferentially along the dendritic structure. Regardless of the percent of shielding nitrogen gas, the analyzed nitrogen contents were very much lower than that of the bulk specimen. This can be arisen because the nitrogen in shielding gas may partly dissolve into the weldment, but simultaneously during the welding process, nitrogen in the alloy may escape into the atmosphere. However, the pitting resistance equivalent number (PREN) of the interdendrite area was higher than that of the dendrite arm, regardless of the shielding gas percent; and the PREN of the interdendrite area was higher than that of the base metal; the PREN of the dendrite arm was lower than that of the base metal because of the formation of (Cr, Mo) rich phases by welding.

  • Precast concrete slab track is a track structure to be installed by transporting and assembling precast concrete slabs manufactured at the factory. This method can improve concrete quality, provide easy maintenance and reduce construction time, compared with in-situ concrete track. However, the concrete slabs being continuously connected in longitudinal direction, due to the temperature change between summer and winter, the openings at slab joints have occurred. Thus, in this study, to identify the cause of this opening of slab joint, the joint opening caused by temperature drop in the longitudinally continuous precast concrete slab track has been predicted using three-dimensional finite element analysis, and compared with field measurements. Based on the proven model, the slab joint opening, and the stress pattern of concrete slab and steel reinforcement according to concrete slab-base friction properties, concrete-reinforcement bond properties, and prestressing were analyzed.

  • Steel Fiber Reinforced Shotcrete(SFRS) has been prevalently used in lining to stabilize tunnel structures as temporary or permanent support. In recent, it is one of the major elements of tunnel construction, and so the quality control of SFRC should be clarified to guarantee the safety. The experimental study has been performed to verify the possible correlations in several chracteristics related to quality of SFRC and examine the applicability of round panel test for in field. The test variables were the type and dosage of accelerator, aspect ratio of fiber, and fiber content. The test results such as compressive strength, flexural strength, flexural toughness, and energy absorption capacity, were exmained and analyzed scrutinizingly.

  • Glass-fiber reinforced polyester(GFRP) composite material is a promising alternative to existing construction materials such as steel, concrete and wood. One of passible applications of GFRP composite material is to build temporary bridges by assembling GFRP composite decks. In this paper, we develop a system of temporary arch bridges that can be built by easy assembling of GFRP composite decks. For this purpose, several types of temporary arch bridges are suggested and verified by FE analysis.

  • An increase in the amount of cracking in repaired concrete bridge decks using VES-LMC(Very Early Strength - Latex Modified Concrete ; below VES-LMC) has been noticed by Yun et al(1). Literature indicates that indeed many concrete bridge decks develop transverse cracking, most developing at early ages(3~7 days), many right after construction. The purpose of this study was to establish prevention of map, transverse and longitudinal cracking in VES-LMC and to provide a control methods for minimizing the occurrence of cracks. The proposed prevention against map and transverse cracking was verified by field applications. VES cement was modified, the unit cement contents was reduced into $360kg/m^3$ from $390kg/m^3$, the maximum size of coarse aggregate was increase into 19mm from 13mm, wire mesh and steel fibers were incorporated in concrete mixture. A series of variable combinations were attempted. As a results, the proposed prevention against map and transverse cracking was verified because no crack were occurred until 90 days after overlay.

  • Many failures of concrete structures are related to steel corrosion. For this reason, it is important to recognize how the carbonation can affect the durability of reinforced concrete structures. The repeatability of the carbonation depth measure in a specimen of concrete sprayed with a phenolphthalein solution is consistently low whereby it is necessary to have an impartial method to measure the carbonation depth. This study presents two automatic algorithms to detect the non-carbonated zone in concrete specimens. The first algorithm is based solely on digital processing image (DPI), mainly morphological and threshold techniques. The second algorithm is based on artificial intelligence, more specifically on an array of Kohonen networks, but also using some DPI techniques to refine the results. Moreover, another algorithm was developed with the purpose of measure the carbonation depth from the image obtained previously.

  • In this paper, optimization of cylindrical shells under external pressure to minimize its weight has been studied. Buckling equations are based on standard of ABS underwater vehicles. Dimension and type of circumferential stiffeners, and its distance from each other are assumed as variables of optimization problem. Considering the extent of these variables, genetic algorithms have been used for optimization. To study the effect of hydrostatic pressure on the shell and its fabrication according to the existing standards, geometrical and construction as well as stress and buckling constraints have been used in optimization algorithm and also penalty functions are applied to eliminate weak model. Finally, the best model which has the minimum weight considering the applied pressure has been presented.
