  • Large diameter piles can be defined as piles with diameter of at least 0.76 m (2.5 ft). In bridge foundation, large diameter piles have been used as pier foundations and their use has been increased greatly. In this study, static pile load tests for large diameter piles peformed in Kwangan Grande Bridge construction site were introduced. Also, various sensor installation methods for several types of piles (that is, open-ended steel pipe pile, drilled shafts and socketed pipe piles), pipe axial load measuring method, load transfer analysis method and pile load test results (pile-head load - settlement curve, and pile axial load distribution curve along the pile depth) were introduced.

  • Recently, As the high rise buildings have been demanded due to the rising current of land price, the permanent drainage method have been applied during and after the construction as a way to reduce the buoyancy acting on the bottoms of the foundations in the basement. This method has brought about the consolidation subsidence of the ground and turned out to be the problems of sinking hole and foundation re-settlement. The representative methods to be used for extending the life cycle of the existing building structure which is tilted by the foundation re-settlement or differential settlement of the foundation can be divided into the building structures reinforcement and soil reinforcement. The purpose of this study is to analyze and present the application example of steel pipe pile method to extend the life cycle of the six -stories building tilted in a soft ground.

  • Recently, because of mega foundations and grand bridges, the foundations require significant bearing capacity. In this study, bearing capacity of high strength steel pipe pile with an extended head (HSP) is calculated on the basis of domestic criteria and Japanese criteria. And bearing capacity of HSP is investigated based on 3 field tests. In comparison with the results of analysis and tests, it is shown that the field test results are bigger than analysis results. Therefore, it is proposed to estimate bearing capacity of HSP.

  • Recent experimental research results of connection method between steel pipe pile and concrete footing are provided based on various experimental observations. It gives a shedding light toward developing better and concrete connection method for steel pipe pile at the field application. In this study, the newly developed method is tested for compressive, pull put and combination load including moment with carefully designed monitoring system. The measured data show that new method have at least equivalent or better load resistant capacities compared with those of specified method in Korea Highway Corporation design code. It is also tried to define and investigate the load transfer mechanism for new method.

  • The pressure penetrating steel pipe pile method which can be constructed in a narrow space using the hydraulic jack is used on the foundation reinforcement, extension of the structure and basement, restoration of the differential settlement etc.. This method is possible to construct in narrow areas and low story height, the non-noise and non-vibration works, and it is possible for the construction site to be clean without slime. And it is possible to confirm the bearing capacity of pile due to penetrating the pile with the compression load of hydraulic jack. In this study, the static load test with the load-transfer test was carried out to investigate the bearing behavior characteristics of the pressure penetrating steel pipe pile. Four series of static load test were executed to investigate the variation of bearing behavior of the pressure penetrating steel pipe pile. As a result of these tests, the allowable load of the pressure penetrating steel pipe was evaluated more than 637 kN, and the shaft resistance corresponding to 81~86% of each applied load was mobilized with only a small portion of the base resistance acting. And it was also evaluated that the unit skin friction was mobilized to maximum value after two months.

  • When pile foundation constructed by driving method, it is desirable to perform monitoring and estimation of pile drivability and bearing capacity using some suitable tools. Dynamic Pile Monitoring yields information regarding the hammer, driving system, and pile and soil behaviour that can be used to confirm the assumptions of wave equation analysis. Dynamic Pile Monitoring is performed with the Pile Driving Analyser. The Pile Driving Analyser (PDA) uses wave propagation theory to compute numerous variables that fully describe the condition of the hammer-pile-soil system in real time, following each hammer impact. This approach allows immediate field verification of hammer performance, driving efficiency, and an estimate of pile capacity. The PDA has been used widely as a most effective control method of pile installations. A set of PDA test was performed at the site of Donghea-1 Gas Platform Jacket which is located east of Ulsan. The drilling core sediments of location of jacket subsoil are composed of mud and sand, silt. In this case study, the results of PDA test which was applied to measurement and estimation of large diameter open ended steel pipe pile driven by underwater hydraulic hammer, MHU-800S, at the marine sediments were summarized.

  • Open-ended steel pipe piles have outside frictional force and inside frictional resistance in which blocked soil acts on the inside of the steel pipe during installation. It is expected that the ultimate load will change depending on the inside and outside resistance. And, if the ground on which the piles were constructed is clay soil, it is predicted that it will have effect on the negative skin friction caused by the ground settlement. Therefore, in this study, the behavior according to the inside and outside resistance characteristics of steel pipe piles was analyzed numerically, and the frictional force distribution, axial load and settlements before and after the occurrence of ground settlement were calculated. As a result of the analysis, the inside frictional resistance had less influence than the outside frictional resistance. However, inside frictional resistance is considered to be one of the important factors considering the effect on the overall pile behavior, and both resistance factors need to be considered in the design process.

  • The steel pipe of steel-concrete composite drilled shafts increases the pile strength and induces the ductile failure by constraining the deformation of the inner concrete. In this research, pile loading tests were performed to analyze the field applicability of a steel-concrete composite drilled shafts. The test ground consisted of 5~7 m thick soil underlying rock mass. The test piles consisted of two steel-concrete composite drilled shafts, which were the concrete filled steel pipe piles with the diameter of 0.508 m, and a concrete pile with the same diameter. The test results showed that the boundary between the upper steel composite section and the lower concrete section was structurally weak and needs to be reinforced by using a inner steel cage. If the boundary is located in deep depth, which is not influenced by lateral load, the allowable strength of the lower concrete section increases, so an economical design can be performed by increasing the design load of steel-concrete composite drilled shafts.

  • The behavior of composite piles composed of steel pipe pile in the upper part and concrete pile in the lower part by a mechanical splicing joint was examined by field lateral load tests and bending tests. A total of 7 piles including two instrumented piles for bending test were installed. The soil profile consists of soft clay with weak silt with shallow groundwater level. Laboratory tests were carried out to determine the basic soil characteristics and the strength parameters. This paper presents the composite pile behavior with various portions of the upper steel pile: 0, 20, 30, and 45% of the pile embedded pile length. Three-point bending tests were performed to investigate the stress-strain relation at the mechanical joint. Based on these test results, the behavior of composite piles with various upper steel pile length are evaluated and the stability of mechanical joints are examined. Through comparisons with results of field load tests, it was found that lateral load carrying capacity of the composite piles increased and deflections of the composite piles decreased with increasing the upper steel piles. The mechanical joint was proved to retain its structural stability against the tested load conditions. Economical benefits of composite pile of this kind can be gained by setting adequately the length of the upper steel pipe piles.
