  • In this study, kinetics data was obtained for steam reforming reaction of ethane over the commercial ruthenium catalyst. The variables of ethane steam reforming were the reaction temperature, partial pressure of ethane, and steam/ethane mole ratio. Parameters for the power rate law kinetic model and the Langmuir-Hinshelwood model were obtained from the kinetic data. Also, sizing of steam reforming reactor was performed by using PRO/II simulator. The reactor size calculated by the power rate law kinetic model was bigger than that of using the Langmuir-Hinshelwood model for the same conversion of ethane. Reactor size calculated by the Langmuir-Hinshelwood model seems to be more suitable for the reactor design because the Langmuir-Hinshelwood model was more consistent with the experimental results.

  • The catalyst Ni/MgO (Ni : 15 wt%) has been applied to methane reforming reactions, such as steam reforming of methane (SRM), partial oxidation of methane (POM), and oxy-steam reforming of methane (OSRM). It showed high activity and good stability in all the reforming reactions. Especially, it exhibited stable catalytic performance even in stoichiometric SRM (H2O/CH4 = 1). From TPR and H2 pulse chemisorption results, a strong interaction between NiO and MgO results in a high dispersion of Ni crystallite. Pulse reaction results revealed that both CH4 and O2 are activated on the surface of metallic Ni over the catalyst, and then surface carbon species react with adsorbed oxygen to produce CO.

  • In this paper, heat and mass transfer characteristics through experimental and numerical study are extensively investigated in steam reform ins reactor under given operating conditions. In order to get simulated data at outlet of the reformer, heterogeneous reactor model is incorporated. As the reaction also takes place in porous media, two medium approach is used to take into account thermally non-equilibrium phenomena between catalyst and bulk gas. In steam reforming reaction, heat transfer issue is so significant that geometrical configuration study is also conducted.

  • Kinetic and effectiveness factors for methanol steam reforming using commercial copper-containing catalysts in a plug flow reactor were investigated over the temperature ranges of $180-250^{\circ}C$ at atmospheric pressure. The selectivity of $CO_2$/$H_2$ was almost 100%, and CO products were not observed under reaction conditions employed in this work. It was indicated that $CO_2$ was directly produced and CO was formed via the reverse water gas shift reaction after methanol steam reforming. The intrinsic kinetics for such reactions were well described by the Langmuir-Hinshelwood model based on the dual-site mechanism. The six parameters in this model, including the activation energy of 103kJ/mol, were estimated from diffusion-free data. The significant effect of internal diffusion was observed for temperature higher than $230^{\circ}C$ or particle sizes larger than 0.36mm. In the diflusion-limited case, this model combined with internal effectiveness factors was also found to be good agreement with experimental data.

  • The experimental performance evaluation of a cylindrical steam reformer with various thermal conditions has been conducted. The bottom space of the cylindrical reactor was packed with Ruthenium (Ru) catalyst. A three-segment furnace was installed to create the axially variable boundary temperature distribution. Six K-type thermocouples were inserted into the catalyst layer, and three exhaust ports were fabricated on the side wall along the flow direction. The exhausted gases at each port were analyzed by using gas chromatograph (GC) system. The experimental results showed that the reforming reaction occurs intensively in the upstream region and more hydrogen is obtained when the intake gas is sufficiently heated up through the enhanced steam reforming (SR) reaction. The axially increasing boundary temperature setup provided the maximally accumulated reforming efficiency of 74.8%, when the reactor was placed at the 3rd section of the furnace.

  • Hydrogen production from biogas has received consistent attention due to the great potential to solve simultaneously the issues of energy demands and environmental problems. Practically, biomethane produced by purification/upgrading of biogas can be a good alternative to the natural gas which is a main reactant for a steam methane reforming process. Judging from the economic and environmental impacts, however, the steam biogas and dry reforming are considered to be more effective routes for hydrogen production because both processes do not require the carbon dioxide elimination step. Herein, we highlight recent studies of hydrogen production via reforming processes using biogas and effective applications for earlier commercialization.

  • To remove tar and produce environment-friendly $H_2$, one of the promising routes is the sorption-enhanced steam reforming (SESR) process, in which the $CO_2$ sorbent is a key element. We prepared the $CO_2$ sorbents with $Ca_{12}Al_{14}O_{33}$ as carrier with various methods. Their characterizations were examined, and the sample prepared by solgel (SG) method showed the strongest CaO and $Ca_{12}Al_{14}O_{33}$ phases and the most excellent pore structure among all the samples. Then, a thermogravimetric experiment was conducted, and the results showed that the sample prepared by sol-gel (SG) method had the best $CO_2$ adsorption capacity and excellent long-term cyclic stability. Finally, the sorbent was used into the steam reforming experiments of tar. Under the action of the sorbent, the reforming reaction was enhanced in-situ, with the $H_2$ yield and concentration improved obviously, and especially, $H_2$ concentration can reach over 98.85%.

  • In this paper, the techno-economic analysis of glycerol steam reforming for $H_2$ production capacity of $300m^3\;h^{-1}$ was carried out. The process of glycerol steam reforming was constructed by using Aspen $HYSYS^{(R)}$, a commercial process simulator, and parametric studies for the effect of the operating temperature on $H_2$ production was performed. Moreover, the economic analysis was conducted through an itemized cost estimation, sensitivity analysis (SA) and cash flow diagram (CFD), and the unit $H_2$ production cost was 5.10 $ ${kgH_2}^{-1}$ through the itemized cost estimation of glycerol steam reforming for $H_2$ production capacity of $300m^3\;h^{-1}$. SA was employed to identify key economic factors and various economic indicators such as net present value (NPV), discounted payback period (DPBP), and present value ratio (PVR) were found according to $H_2$ selling price using CFD.
