  • Metaheuristic optimization approach has become the new framework for control synthesis. The main purposes of the control design are command (input) tracking and load (disturbance) regulating. This article proposes an optimal proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller design for the DC motor speed control system with tracking and regulating constrained optimization by using the cuckoo search (CS), one of the most efficient population-based metaheuristic optimization techniques. The sum-squared error between the referent input and the controlled output is set as the objective function to be minimized. The rise time, the maximum overshoot, settling time and steady-state error are set as inequality constraints for tracking purpose, while the regulating time and the maximum overshoot of load regulation are set as inequality constraints for regulating purpose. Results obtained by the CS will be compared with those obtained by the conventional design method named Ziegler-Nichols (Z-N) tuning rules. From simulation results, it was found that the Z-N provides an impractical PID controller with very high gains, whereas the CS gives an optimal PID controller for DC motor speed control system satisfying the preset tracking and regulating constraints. In addition, the simulation results are confirmed by the experimental ones from the DC motor speed control system developed by analog technology.

  • This paper is proposed an efficiency optimization control algorithm for a synchronous reluctance motor which minimizes the copper and iron losses. The design of the speed controller based on adaptive fuzzy-neural networks(AFNN) controller that is implemented using fuzzy control and neural networks. There exists a variety of combinations of d and q-axis current which provide a specific motor torque. The objective of the efficiency optimization controller is to seek a combination of d and q-axis current components, which provides minimum losses at a certain operating point in steady state. It is shown that the current components which directly govern the torque production have been very well regulated by the efficiency optimization control scheme. The proposed algorithm allows the electromagnetic losses in variable speed and torque drives to be reduced while keeping good torque control dynamics. The control performance of the hybrid artificial intelligent controller is evaluated by analysis for various operating conditions. Analysis results are presented to show the validity of the proposed algorithm.

  • We propose a design method that uses H$_{\infty}$ optimization method to suppress oscillation of a shaft between motor and load for high precision (0.001 % of reference input) position controls. PI speed control loop was introduced as a minor loop. Standard problem is used for the modeling of the system and Glover-Doyle's algorithm is used for the optimization in the H$_{\infty}$ space. Friction is considered to be an important factor that makes it difficult for the system to reach steady state in short time. In this paper, we propose a hybrid controller that includes PI speed feedback loop, which is expected to have a role to reject torque disturbance like friction.n.n.

  • Adaptive algorithms based on gradient adaptation have been extensively investigated and successfully jointed with active noise/vibration control applications. The Filtered-X LMS algorithm became one of the basic feedforward algorithms in such applications, but still is not fully understood. The error path model effect on the Filtered-X LMS algorithm has been under the investigation and some useful properties related stability has been discovered. We are interested in utilizing the fact that the model error caused by the way optimizing the error path model in a view point of convergence speed of Filtered-X LMS algorithm for pure tone noise suppression application without any performance loss at steady state.

  • Cryogenic insulation systems, with proper materials selection and execution, can offer the highest levels of thermal performance. Insulations are listed in order of increasing performance and, generally, in order of increasing cost. The specific insulation to be used for a particular application is determined through a compromise between cost, ease of application and the effectiveness of the insulation. Consequently, materials, representative test conditions, and engineering approach for the particular application are crucial to achieve the optimum result. The present work is based on energy cost balance for optimizing the thickness of insulated chambers, using foamed or multi layered cryogenic shell. The considered insulation is a uniformly applied outer layer whose thickness varies with the initial and boundary conditions of the studied vessel under steady-state radial heat transfer. An expression of the optimal insulation thickness derived from the total cost function and depending on the geometrical parameters of the container is presented.

  • Thermoforming is one of the most versatile and economical processes available for shaping polymer products, but obtaining a uniform thickness of the final product using this method is difficult. Heater power adjustment is very important because the thickness distribution depends strongly on the distribution of the sheet temperature. In this paper, the steady-state optimum distribution of heater power is first ascertained by a numerical optimization to obtain a uniform sheet temperature. The time-dependent optimal heater input is then determined to decrease the temperature difference through the direction of the thickness using the response surface method and the D-optimal method. The optimal results show that the time-dependent optimum heater power distribution gives an acceptable uniform sheet temperature in the forming temperature range by the end of the heating process.

  • Stator core loss has significant adverse effects when an induction motor is controlled by the conventional vector control method. Therefore, taking core toss into account should make it possible to control the torque very precisely. This paper proposes a speed sensorless vector control method for an induction motor at optimum efficiency and high response taking core loss account. The proposed vector control system consists of a speed adaptive rotor flux observer which takes core loss into account and employs a direct vector control which compensates for the influence of core loss. Also, in this paper, a vector controlled induction motor with a deadbeat rotor flux controller is developed. The method ensures optimum efficiency in the steady state without degradation of the dynamic response. The validity of the proposed technique is confirmed by simulation results for induction motor drive system.

  • Management of infrastructure stock is essential in sustainability of society, and its analysis and optimization are studied in the light of control system modeling in this paper. At the first part of the paper, cost of stock management is analyzed based on macroscopic statistics on infrastructure stock and economical growth. Stock management burden relative to economy is observed to become larger at low economic growth periods in developed economies. Then, control system modeling of stock management is introduced and by augmenting maintenance actions as control input, dynamic behavior of stock is simulated and compared with existing time history statistics. Assuming steady state conditions, applicability of the model to cross sectional data is also demonstrated. The proposed model is enhanced so that both preventive and corrective maintenance can be included as system inputs, i.e., feedforward and feedback control inputs. Optimal management strategy to achieve specified deteriorated stock level with minimal cost, expressed in terms of preventive and corrective maintenance actions, is derived based on estimated parameter values for corrosion of steel bridges. Relative cost effectiveness of preventive maintenance is shown when target deteriorated stock level is lower.

  • This paper is proposed genetic algorithm tuning(GAT) control)or for high performance of induction motor drive. We employed GA to the classical PI controller. The approach having ability for global optimization and with good robustness, is expected to overcome some weakness of conventional approaches and to be more acceptable for industrial practices. The control performance of the GAT PI controller is evaluated by analysis for various operating conditions. The results of experiment prove that the proposed control system has strong high performance and robustness to parameter variation, and steady-state accuracy and transient response.

  • Genetic algorithms were described as a method of solving large-scaled optimization problems with complex constraints. It has overcome their slowness, a major drawback of genetic algorithms using hardware implementation of genetic algorithm processor (GAP). In this study, we proposed GAP effectively connecting the goodness of survival-based GA, steady-state GA, tournament selection. Using Pipeline Parallel processing, handshaking protocol effectively, the proposed GAP exhibits 50% speed-up over survival-based GA which runs one million crossovers per second(1MHz). It will be used for high speed processing such of central processor of EHW, robot control and many optimization problem.
