  • Three-dimensional, statistical-mechanical formulations of problems are usually untractable analytically, and therefore they are commonly solved numerically. However, their one-dimensional counterparts are always to be solved analytically. In general analytical solutions sheds more insights to the problems than numerical solutions. Hence, solutions of one-dimensional problems may provide key properties to the problems, when they are extended to three dimensions. In this article, thermodynamic properties of one-dimensional fluid comprising molecules of rigid rods are analyzed statistical-mechanically. Molecules of rigid rods are characterized with repulsive or excluded volume effect. It is observed that this feature is well reflected in thermodynamic functions such as Helmholtz free energy. volumetric equation of state. chemical potential, entropy, etc.

  • This paper derive a method to solve change point regression problems via a process for obtaining consequential results using properties of a difference-based intercept estimator first introduced by Park and Kim (Communications in Statistics - Theory Methods, 2019) for outlier detection in multiple linear regression models. We describe the statistical properties of the difference-based regression model in a piecewise simple linear regression model and then propose an efficient algorithm for change point detection. We illustrate the merits of our proposed method in the light of comparison with several existing methods under simulation studies and real data analysis. This methodology is quite valuable, "no matter what regression lines" and "no matter what the number of change points".

  • Industrial machines are sometimes exposed to the danger of earthquake. In the design of a mechanical system, this factor should be accounted for from the viewpoint of reliability. A method to analyze a complex nonlinear structure system under random excitation is proposed. First, the actual random excitation, such as earthquake, is approximated to the corresponding Gaussian process far the statistical analysis. The modal equations of overall system are expanded sequentially. Then, the perturbed equations are synthesized into the overall system and solved in probabilistic way. Several statistical properties of a random process that are of interest in random vibration applications are reviewed in accordance with nonlinear stochastic problem. The obtained statistical properties of the nonlinear random vibration are evaluated in each substructure. Comparing with the results of the numerical simulation proved the efficiency of the proposed method.

  • This paper introduces a two-parameter discrete distribution based on a continuous two-parameter bathtub distribution. It is the only two-parameter discrete distribution that shows a bathtub-shaped hazard function. Some statistical properties of the distribution are discussed. Three different methods are used to estimate its two unknown parameters. The point estimators of the parameters have no closed form. The bootstrap method is used to estimate the distributions of these point estimators. Different approximations of the interval estimations for the two-parameters are discussed. Real data sets are analyzed to show how this distribution works in practice. A simulation study is performed to investigate the properties of the estimations obtained and compare their performances.

  • In the current analysis, we examine news coverage data widely used in media studies. News coverage data is usually time series data to capture the volume or the tone of the news media's coverage of a topic. We first describe the distributional properties of autoregressive conditionally heteroscadestic(ARCH) effects and compare two major American newspaper's coverage of U.S.-North Korea relations. Subsequently, we propose a change point detection model and apply it to the detection of major change points in the tone of American newspaper coverage of U.S.-North Korea relations.

  • We propose new classes of estimators of population mean under non-response using bivariate auxiliary information. Some improved regression (or difference) type estimators have been proposed in four different situations of non response along with their properties and the expressions for the bias and mean square errors of the proposed estimators are derived under double (two-stage) sampling scheme. The properties of the suggested class of estimators are studied and it is observed that the proposed estimators performed better when compared to conventional estimators proposed by Singh and Kumar (Journal of Statistical Planning and Inference, 140, 2536-2550, 2010b), Shabbir and Khan (Communications in Statistics - Theory and Methods, 42, 4127-4145, 2013) and Bhushan and Naqvi (Journal of Statistics and Management Systems, 18, 573-602, 2015). A comparative study is also conducted both theoretically as well as empirically in order to support the results.

  • Some engineering materials are often known to have considerable spatial variation in their resisting strength and other properties. The objective of this study is to investigate the averaging effect and the applicability of extremal statistic for the statistical size effect. In the present study, it is assumed that the material property is a stationary random process in space. The theoretical autocorrelation function of the material strength are discussed for several correlation lengths. And, in order to investigate the statistical size effect, the material properties was simulated by using the non-Gaussian random process method. The material properties were plotted on the Weibull probability papers. The main results are summarized as follows: The autocorrelation function of the material properties are almost independent of the averaging length. The variance decreases with increasing the averaging length. As correlation length is smaller, the slope is larger. And also, it was found that Weibull statistics based on the weakest-link model could not explain the spatial variation of material properties with respect to the size effect satisfactory.

  • Room acoustic properties of coupled rooms connected by an aperture has been analyzed using statistical acoustic model based on the diffused sound field assumption, which has limitation in dealing with the parameters such an room geometries and non uniform absorptivity of the boundary surfaces. In order to overcome these difficulties the acoustic diffusion model has been introduced, by which distribution of the acoustic energy density can be analyzed for various shapes and wall absorptivity. In this study acoustic properties of coupled rooms connected by an aperture(e.g. door) is analyzed using acoustic diffusion equation, which is solved numerically. The mean energy densities of two rooms obtained by the diffusion model are compared with those from the statistical model. The results show good agreement for various coupling aperture sizes and absorption coefficients. For a limiting case when the partition wall is substituted by an aperture and the two rooms eventually forms a single room, results of coupled room analysis using diffusion model show good agreement with those of a single room.

  • The concept of performance based seismic design has been gradually accepted by the earthquake engineering profession recently, in which the cost-effectiveness criterion is one of the most important principles and more attention is paid to the structural performance at the inelastic stage. Since there are many uncertainties in seismic design, reliability analysis is a major task in performance based seismic design. However, structural reliability analysis may be very costly and time consuming because the limit state function is usually a highly nonlinear implicit function with respect to the basic design variables, especially for the complex large-scale structures for dynamic and nonlinear analysis. Understanding statistical properties of the structural inelastic deformation, which is the aim of the present paper, is helpful to develop an efficient approximate approach of reliability analysis. The present paper studies the statistical properties of the maximum elastoplastic story drift of steel frames subjected to earthquake load. The randomness of earthquake load, dead load, live load, steel elastic modulus, yield strength and structural member dimensions are considered. Possible probability distributions for the maximum story are evaluated using K-S test. The results show that the choice of the probability distribution for the maximum elastoplastic story drift of steel frames is related to the mean value of the maximum elastoplastic story drift. When the mean drift is small (less than 0.3%), an extreme value type I distribution is the best choice. However, for large drifts (more than 0.35%), an extreme value type II distribution is best.

  • In this article various notions of multivariate negative dependence for random variables are obtained. Various properties and interrelationships are also derived from these notions. Several counterexamples are given to illustrate that other implications may not hold.
