  • Static loadings on ship structure induced either by water pressure before service such as a tank test and ballasting or by cargo pressure during first laden voyage cause relatively much greater stress than dynamic loadings induced by wave. With these static pre-loadings, the initial residual stresses around welded joint, where fatigue strength is concerned(in most cases, where stress concentration occurs) are expected to be shaken-down in a great extent by the elasto-plastic deformation behavior of material. Therefore, it is more resonable to assess the fatigue strength of ship structure with S-N data which have taken into account the effect of shaken-down residual stresses(re-distributed stresses) on the fatigue strength. In this research work, the re-distribution of residual stresses by the tensile pre-loading is measured using an ordinary sectioning method for specimens of padding plate weldment. Fatigue tests are performed also to evaluate the fatigue strength of the both as-welded and pre-loaded specimens.

  • The fatigue behaviors of mechanically alloyed Al-4Mg alloys dispersed with either $Al_2O_3$ or $MgAl_2O_4$ oxide particles were investigated. This study maily concerned with the role of coherency of dispersed particles with the matrix on the fatigue behavior of the alloys. The $MgAl_2O_4$ which has a spinel structure with the lattice parameter of exactly the twice of Al showed the habit relation with the matrix. The mechanically alloyed Al-4Mg alloys showed stable stress responses with fatigue cycles from start to failure regadless of strain amplitudes and of existence of dispersoids. The Al-4Mg alloy dispersed with $MgAl_2O_4$ showed not only the better static mechanical properties but also the better low cycle fatigue resistance than that with $Al_2O_3$, i.e., much higher plastic strain energy dissipated to failure, at low strain amplitude. However, this alloy showed inferior fatigue resistance to that dispersed with $Al_2O_3$ or that without dispersion at high strain amplitude. These results imply that $MgAl_2O_4$ may promote lowering the stacking fault energy of the alloy inherited from the coherency with the matrix so that dislocations shuttle back and forth on the same slip plane without cross slipping to other planes during fatigue at low strain amplitude resulting in long fatigue life.

  • Thermal fatigue life of the automobile exhaust manifold is directly affected by the restraint force according to the structure of exhaust system and bead shape of the welded joints. In the present study, the microstructural changes and precipitation behavior during thermal fatigue cycle of the 18wt% Cr ferritic stainless steel weld heat affected zone (HAZ) considering restraint stress were investigated. The simulation of weld HAZ and thermal fatigue test were carried out using a metal thermal cycle simulator under complete constraint force in the static jig. The change of the restraint stress on the weld HAZ was simulated by changing the shape of notch in the specimen considering the stress concentration factor. Thermal fatigue properties of the weld HAZ were deteriorated during cyclic heating and cooling in the temperature range of $200^{\circ}C$ to $900^{\circ}C$ due to the decrease of Nb content in solid solution and coarsening of MX type precipitates, laves phase, $M_6C$ with coarsening of grain and softening of the matrix. As the restraint stress on the specimen increased, the thermal fatigue life was decreased by dynamic precipitation and rapid coarsening of the precipitates.

  • Fiber metal hybrid laminate (FML) can be used as an economic material with superior mechanical properties and light weight than conventional metal by bonding of metal and FRP. However, there are disadvantages that it is difficult to predict fracture behavior because of the large difference in properties depending on the type of fiber and lamination conditions. In this paper, we study the failure behavior of hybrid materials with laminated glass fiber reinforced plastics (GFRP, GEP118, woven type) in Al6061-T6 alloy. The Al alloys were coated with GFRP 1, 3, and 5 layers, and fracture behavior was analyzed by using a static test and a low cycle fatigue test. In the low cycle fatigue test, strain - life analysis and the total strain energy density method were used to analyze and predict the fatigue life. The Al alloy did not have tensile properties strengthening effect due to the GFRP coating. The fatigue hysteresis geometry followed the behavior of the Al alloy, the base material, regardless of the GFRP coating and number of coatings. As a result of the low cycle fatigue test, the fatigue strength was increased by the coating of GFRP, but it did not increase proportionally with the number of GFRP layers.

  • In this thesis, the fatigue tests were performed on a series of SFRC (steel fiber reinforced concrete)to investigate the flexural tensile behavior of SFRC varying with the steel fiber contents and the steel fiber aspect ratios. Beam specimens of 10$\times$10$\times$60cm are used. the specimen series are classified according to the steel fiber contents varying 0.5. 1.0, 1.5%, and to the steel fiber aspect ratios varying 60, 80, 100. The three point loading system was used in the fatigue tests. The minimum value of repeated loading was fixed at 10.0kgf and maximum value was 75% to static ultimate strength for periodically using concrete strain gages located at the lower end of the mid-span, and the stress-strain curves were drawn for each specimens, respectively. From the tests result, it was found that the larger steel fiber content and the smaller the steel fiber aspect ratio is , the tensile strain of SFRC under fatigue load proportionally increases. By the regression analysis on these results, the empirical formulae to predict the tensile strain of SFRC were suggested. In comparison of the tensile elastic modulus under fatigue load, it was also found that the larger steel fiber content and the smaller steel fiber aspect ratio is , the smaller decreasing rate of the stiffness of SFRC under fatigue load decreased.

  • Various surface treatments and thin film coating processes on the surface of injection die steel have been developed to extend the life. Most of previous studies were mainly focused on investigating the wear and static bonding behavior of thin films. In this study complex surface treatments of DLC coating combined with ion nitriding were applied to increase fatigue life and wear resistance. Ion nitriding, DLC coating, and DLC coating following nitriding on the surface of Fe-3.0Ni-0.7Cr-1.4Mn-X steel were investigated to uncover the beneficial effect which is applicable to injection die. The effect of various surface treatments and coating conditions on high cycle fatigue resistance was studied. Surface morphology change during fatigue tests were observed with AFM. Fatigue life of the die steel increased by 10 to 1,000 times at the various level of stress amplitudes in the condition of DLC coating following the ion nitriding for 3 hrs comparing with the only DLC coated condition.

  • The application of fracture mechanics is being increased gradually to assess the safety of welded structures containing crack. Fatigue crack propagation behavior and elastic-plastic fracture toughness J$_{IC}$ of home made flux cored wire(1.22mm) CO$_{2}$ weldments was discussed. Especially fatigue crack propagation test was carried out by .DELTA.K control instead of load control and elastic-plastic fracture toughness J$_{IC}$ was obtained by ASTM-R curve method on C.T.specimen in transverse direction of weldments. The results obtained are as follows; (1) Weld metal presented an almost complete similarity to base metal on fatigue crack propagation rate in transverse direction. (2) Weld metal was more than base metal on J$_{IC}$ value in transverse direction. (3) F.C.W. CO$_{2}$ weldments had an excellent characteristic of fatigue crack propagation rate and J$_{IC}$ in less than 50kg/mm$^{2}$ steel grade, this would result from that weld metal had good static strength.trength.

  • For industrial centrifuges, the state of their welding areas, even with a naked-eye observation, offers potential safety problems such as inconsistent bead formation. STS304, which is used mainly in centrifuges, is made of metal alloys with chrome and nickel as the main ingredients, offering excellent corrosion resistance, thermal resistance, and high strength, and thus allowing it to be used for diverse purposes. This paper conducted tensile and fatigue tests of STS304 to improve the safety of centrifuges. In the findings, for the static behavior of the STS304 material, welded specimens increased their yield and tensile strength compared with the base test specimens, but decreased their elongation ratio. Also, the data dispersion phenomenon of welded specimens remarkably increased.

  • Recently structural damage has been frequently observed in reinforced concrete bridges due to repeted ioads such as vehicular traffic and due to continual overloads by heavy trucks. Therefore. In this study, the static tests and the fatigue tests were performed on a series of SFRC(steel fibrous reinforced concrete) to investigate the fatigue behavior of SFRC varying with the steel fibrous contents. Through this test, the diagonal cracking loads, ultimate loads, deflections, strains of concrete and steel. On this basis, the crack growth and failure of SFRC beams were studied, and a model for S-N relationship of SFRC was proposed.

  • In this paper, static and fatigue bending strengths of CFRP(carbon fiber reinforced plastic laminates having impact damage(FOD) are evaluated. Composite laminates used for this experiment are CF/EPOXY and CF/PEEK orthotropy laminated plates, which have two-interfaces[${0^0}_4{90^0}_4}$]$_sym$. A steel ball launched by the air gun colides against CFRP laminates to generate impact damages. The damage growth during bending fatigue test is observed by the scanning acoustic microscope(SAM). When the impacted side is compressed, the residual fatigue bending strength of CF/PEEK specimen P is greater that that of CF/EPOXY SPECIMEN B. On the other hand, when the impacted side is in tension, the residual fatigue bending strength of CF/PEEK speicemen P is smaller than that of CF/EPOXY specimen B. In the case of impacted-side compression, fracture is proposed from the transverse crack generated near impact point. On the other hand, fracture is developed toward the impact point from the edge of interface-b delamination in the case of impacted-side tension.
