  • Background: Compliance with California's smoke-free restaurant and bar policies may be more a function of social contingencies and less a function of legal contingencies. The aims of this study were: 1) to report indications of compliance with smoke-free legislation in Korean bars and restaurants in California; 2) to examine the demographic, smoking status, and acculturation factors of who smoked indoors; and 3) to report social cues in opposition to smoking among a sample of Koreans in California. Materials and Methods: Data were collected by telephone surveys administered by bilingual interviewers between 2007-2009, and included California adults of Korean descent who visited a Korean bar or restaurant in a typical month (N=2,173, 55% female). Results: 1% of restaurant-going participants smoked inside while 7% observed someone else smoke inside a Korean restaurant. Some 23% of bar-going participants smoked inside and 65% observed someone else smoke inside a Korean bar. Presence of ashtrays was related to indoor smoking in bars and restaurants. Among participants who observed smoking, a higher percentage observed someone ask a smoker to stop (17.6%) or gesture to a smoker (27.0%) inside Korean restaurants (N=169) than inside Korean bars (n=141, 17.0% observed verbal cue and 22.7% observed gesture). Participants who smoked inside were significantly younger and more acculturated than participants who did not. Less acculturated participants were significantly more to likely to be told to stop smoking. Conclusions: Ten years after implementation of ordinances, smoking appears to be common in Korean bars in California.

  • Cancer is a global public health issue that becomes the second primary cause of death globally. Considering the side effects of radio- or chemo-therapy, natural phytochemicals are promising alternatives for therapeutic interventions to alleviate the side effects and complications. Ginsenoside Rh2 (GRh2) is the main phytochemical extracted from Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer with anticancer activity. GRh2 could induce apoptosis and autophagy of cancer cells and inhibit proliferation, metastasis, invasion, and angiogenesis in vitro and in vivo. In addition, GRh2 could be used as an adjuvant to chemotherapeutics to enhance the anticancer effect and reverse the adverse effects. Here we summarized the understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying the anticancer effects of GRh2 and proposed future directions to promote the development and application of GRh2.

  • The purpose of this study was to determine the moderating effect of subjective health state of elder who lives alone on the influence of those people's stratum consciousness on their depression. For this purpose, the study utilized the 5th version of Korea Longitudinal Study on Aging 2014 and analyzed data concerning 774 elder who lives alone. The findings of this study can be summarized as follows. First, the higher elder who lives alone were in subjective stratum consciousness, the lower they were in depression. Second, elder who lives alone were lower in depression when perceiving they were higher in health state. Third, the elder who lives alone were lower in depression when their perceived subjective health state was higher even if they were lower in stratum consciousness. All these findings clearly indicate that the stratum consciousness and depression of elder who lives alone are moderated by their perceived health state of their own. Lastly, the implications, limitations, and suggestion for further research were discussed.

  • In this paper we suggest the technique to improve the reliability of U-Health system. The idea is that a video recoding start at only the emergency data of patients. This technique reduces the reliability of U-Health system. In the suggested U-Health system based on video control technique, bio sensors are used to send the state information of patients to a server. The server analyzes the health state of patients from base nodes and start video recoding and sends the video information about the patients in the emergent state to the nearest hospital.

  • This study assessed behavioral characteristics of 73 normal neonates in Daegu area using the NBAS. Being one of few studies on this topic, the study is to document and to accumulate data on the neonatal behaviors of Korean babies. Overall scores were at moderate levels in 6 behavioral clusters including Habituation, Social Interactive, Motor System, State Organization, and State Regulation. Autonomic Stability showed relative stableness. Scores of Orientation were higher in neonates of working mothers and rural mothers. Neonates of mothers with no abortion history have higher scores in Motor System and State Organization. Score of State Organization was higher in neonates of mothers with no habitual use of amenity during their pregnancy. Scores of Habituation and State Organization, as well as scores of Motor System with State Organization, State Regulation and Autonomic Stability were positively correlated. Scores of Habituation and State Organization indicate that babies are agreeable and even tameable that is advantageous for attachment to caregiver.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the relationship of job stress, state of sleep, and depression and to identify factors influencing depression of emergency medical technicians. Methods: The research was a cross-sectional, descriptive study. Data collection were done using self-report questionnaires with 162 emergency medical technicians working in hospitals who agreed to participate in the study. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficients and multiple regression with the SPSS/WIN 18.0 Program. Results: Depression had significant negative correlations with state of sleep, (r=-482, p<.001) and positive correlations with job stress (r=.196,p=.013). State of sleep had significant negative correlations with job stress (r=-.168, p=.033). The variance for life satisfaction was 23.7% (F=25.964, p<.001). Variable of state of sleep significantly predicted depression of emergency medical technicians. Conclusion: Considering these results, for emergency medical technicians' job stress, state of sleep, and depression, further studies are needed. Furthermore, there is a need to develop and implement new strategies to improve depression among emergency medical technicians.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop the scale to measure family health and to analyze the data collected by the survey in order to develop the educational program for healthy family. The sample of this study is taken by 522 housewives who are living in Seoul and are over the age of 40. The data are analyzed according to frequency, percentages, t-test, Pearson's correlation analysis, and Multinomial logistic Regression analysis. The results of this study are as follows. First, the scale measuring family health is developed through interviews with the respondents, preliminary survey, and comments reviewed from specialists. The responses to the scale are significantly different depending on whether they answered their family is healthy or not. Second, minimum family performances for family health are related to the category of social involvement of the family. Third, the types of healthy family are grouped by the responses related to the current state and the status of family health. The number of the type of the worst state-the worst status of family health is the largest, followed by the number of the type of the best state-the best status of family health. Fourth, the important and significant variables that affected the types of family health are psychological variables rather than personal and household-related variables of the respondents.
