  • A VSS observer-based sliding mode control is described for continuous-time systems with uncertain nonlinear elements, in which the Euclidean norm of unknown element is bounded by a known value. For a case of complete state information, we first derive a sliding mode controller consisting of three parts: a linear state feedback control, an equivalent input and a min-niax control. It is then shown that the present attractiveness condition is simpler than that for a case without using the concept of equivalent input. We next design a VSS observer as a completely dual form to the sliding mode controller. Finally, we discuss a cas of incomplete state information by applying the VSS observer.

  • In order to reject the steady-state tracking error, it is common to introduce integral compensators in servosystems for constant reference signals. However, if the mathematical model of the plant is exact and no disturbance input exists, the integral compensation is not necessary. From this point of view, a two-degree-of-freedom(2DOF) servosystem has been proposed, in which integral compensation is effective only when there is modeling error for disturbance input. The present paper considers the design problem of 2DOF servosystem incorporating an observer. It is shown that if a state feedback gain and a observer gain satisfy a condition, the integral effect does not appear when modeling error or disturbance input exists. This result means that the servosystem does not behave as a 2DOF servosystem.

  • A battery management system requires accurate information on the battery state of charge (SOC) to achieve efficient energy management of electric vehicle and renewable energy systems. Although correct SOC estimation is difficult because of the changes in the electrical characteristics of the battery attributed to ambient temperature, service life, and operating point, various methods for accurate SOC estimation have been reported. On the basis of piecewise linear (PWL) modeling technique, this paper proposes a simple SOC observer for lithium-polymer batteries. For performance evaluation, the SOC estimated by the PWL SOC observer, the SOC measured by the battery-discharging experiment and the SOC estimated by the extended Kalman filter (EKF) estimator were compared through a PSIM simulation study.

  • In a hard disk drive (HDD) control system, a state-space controller/observer design is popularly adopted fur its advantages such as effective filtering of position and velocity, use of estimation error to handle servo defects, etc. In this report, a systematic method is proposed to accommodate the transport delay in the plant dynamics into the state estimator. • In this paper, the well-conditioned observer is designed to be insensitive to the ill-conditioning factors in transient and steady-state observer performance. A condition number based on 12-norm of the eigenvector matrix of the observer matrix has been proposed on a principal index in the observer performance. For the well-conditioned observer design, the non-normality measure and the observability condition of the observer matrix are utilized. The two constraints are specified into observer gain boundary region that guarantees a small condition number and a stable observer. The observer gain selected in this region guarantees a well-conditioned and observable property. In this study, this method is applied to the Luenberger observer and Kalman filters for small order systems. In designing Kalman filters, the ratio of the process noise covariance to the measurement noise covariance is a design parameter and its effect on the condition number is investigated.

  • This paper presents a scheme for designing a fuzzy model-bsaed state observer for nonlinear system. For this scheme, a Tagaki-Sugeno type fuzzy model whose consequent part is of the state space form is obtained. In describes the locally linear input/output relationship of a system. The parameters of the fuzzy model are adjusted using a genetic algorithm. Then. fuzzy full-order and reduced-order state observers are designed based on the fuzzy model. A set of simulation works is carried out to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

  • This paper deals with an investigation and evaluation of the performance of a state observer based Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) drive controlled by PI (Proportional Integral), PID (Proportional Integral and Derivative), SMC (sliding mode control), ANN (Artificial neural network) and FLC (Fuzzy logic) speed controllers. A detailed study of the steady state and dynamic performance of estimated speed and angle is given to demonstrate the capability of the controllers.

  • This paper presents the sliding mode observer-model following (SMO-MF) power system stabilizer(PSS) for unmeasurable state variables. This SMO-MF PSS is obtained by combining the sliding mode-model following (SM-MF) including closed-loop feedback(CLF) with the full-order observer(FOO). The control input of the proposed MO-MF PSS is derived by Lyapunov's second method to determine a control input that keeps the system stable for unmeasurable plant state variables. Simulation results show that the proposed SMO-MF PSS including CLF is able to reduce the low frequency oscillation and to achieve asymptotic tracking error between the reference mode state and the estimated plant state at different initial conditions.

  • We propose a new switching control scheme for a ball and beam system by utilizing two linearization methods. First, the Jacobian linearization is applied and state observer is developed afterward. Then, motivated [6], the approximate input-output linearization is carried out, and after that, the Jacobian linearization is applied along with the design of state observer. Since the second approach requires two linearizations, it is called a two-step linearization method. The state observer is needed for the estimation of the velocities of ball and motor movement. Since the Jacobian linearization based controller tends to provide faster response at the initial time, and after that, the two-step linearization based controller tends to provide better response in terms of output overshoot and convergence to the origin, it is natural to give a switching control scheme to provide the best overall control response. The validity of our control scheme is shown in both simulation and experimental results.
