Study on Standstill Conditions in Kaizen Activity: Through Case Studies of Two Companies in their Long-Term Efforts

  • Multiple prior studies stress that continued Kaizen activity is conducive to building and maintaining competitive advantages of manufacturing companies. Meanwhile, it remains unclear as to what kind of management factors may exert impact on sustainment of Kaizen activity. This paper discusses a study conducted on the cases of two manufacturing lines, where such activity has been continued for more than ten years. At first, it was discovered that study period was divided into different periods. It was also found out that 'standstill conditions' which prevent smooth progress of activity exist in many periods, and that such conditions are hard to avoid. The study went on to categorize progress of activity in each period into different patterns, including at which points standstill conditions occurred, thereby, circumstances of standstill conditions were made clear. This paper verified a detailed process of Kaizen activity development in each period and the relationship between that detailed process and points of occurrence of standstill conditions. Thought was also given to factors and actions for smooth development, and effects brought about by overcoming such challenges. Lastly, consideration was given to the future perspectives of the study for elucidating how better Kaizen activity may be managed for continuation.

Study on the Difference of the Maneuvering Characteristics of a VLCC in Standstill from those of her in Running

  • The objective of this paper is to make clear the difference of maneuvering characteristics of a VLCC in standstill from those of her in running. The authors made mathematic models to calculate maneuvering motions of a VLCC in standstill using various ahead engine with full rudder angle and calculated their motions in each case and compared the calculated values with those of the same vessel running in sea trial tests. The difference of motions between them is great. For example, a VLCC in standstill can achieve a great alteration of heading over 90 degrees within the distance of 0.2L advance while she advances 3.0L for 90 degrees turning in full running sea trial turning test. Therefore whenever a VLCC in standstill meets a vessel approaching in collision course situation in near distance, it is better and recommendable that she should use her ahead engine with full rudder to avoid collision. So "maneuvering trial tests in standstill conditions" should be added to the content of sea trial tests when a newly built VLCC commence to take sea trials, that has not been included until now.

  • This paper proposes an estimation algorithm for the electrical parameters of synchronous reluctance motors (SynRMs) by using a synchronous PI current regulator at standstill. In reality, the electrical parameters are only measured or estimated in limited conditions without fully considering the effects of the switching devices, connecting wires, and magnetic saturation. As a result, the acquired electrical parameters are different from the real parameters of the motor drive system. In this paper, the effects of switching devices, connecting wires, and the magnetic saturation are considered by simultaneously using the short pulse and closed loop equations of resistance and synchronous inductances. Therefore, the proposed algorithm can be easily and safely implemented with a reduced measuring time. In addition, it does not need any external or additional measurement equipment, information on the motor's dimensions, and material characteristics as in the case of FEM. Several experimental results verify the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

  • This paper describes on the design considerations and analysis of moving primary-type linear induction motor for automatic conveyer system. For the study of the designed motor characteristics, calculated values obtained from the analysis using finite element method for various operation conditions are compared with the experimental results. Using the combined interactions of the thrust, the arigap flux density, and the reactive power at standstill as performance criteria, a proper ratio of the pole pitch to the effective airgap is presented for the design criterion.

  • Recently, research and development for a number of repairing material like an epoxy-based material and polymer-cementitious material as well as anti-washout underwater concrete have been carried out. But, the study on tile materials for the concrete structure exposed to a wetted condition is at a standstill and there are not any suitable reference data at a repairing work for the concrete structure at a splash as well as a structure under severe moisture condition. In this study, the material, called as “ceramic metal”, with an excellent mobility and plasticity as well as with a high bond strength and durability of freezing-thawing resistant properties under any environmental conditions was developed. And, the experimental evaluations for the utility wert widely performed.

Hydrographic Model Test on Prevention against Vortex Occurrence for Vertical Bulb Turbine

  • A vertical bulb turbine unit with elbow type draft tube has been developed due to avoidance of complicated assembling and long standstill period at overhaul in comparison with conventional horizontal bulb turbine unit. Before designing the prototype vertical bulb unit, a hydrographic model test was carried out to establish the ideal design concept for this innovative generating unit. Froude similarity is not available for vortex occurrence. Consequently, an intake structure without air entraining vortices under all the flow conditions is developed, and it is confirmed that the surge wave at load rejection is not affected harmful influence for other constructions.

  • This paper reveals both the operational situation and the cause of the error occurred in wind turbine generator system of Hangwon wind farm in Jeju island. The four wind turbines were selected for this work, and the monitored period was for six months. Wind resource in the wind farm was analyzed, and the estimated energy production was compared with the actual energy production. As a result, with a decrease of system error, the estimated energy production was in good agreement with the actual energy production. The errors occurring in components such as gearbox and hydraulic motor affected the Availability of the wind turbine. Also, poor external conditions such as a strong wind, lightning and gust caused a standstill of wind turbines.

  • This paper presents a novel design of a self tuning PI controller of induction motor using fuzzy control. In this approach, the fuzzy tuning of a PI controller gains is achieved through fuzzy rules deduced from many robustness simulation tests applied to several induction motors, for a variety of operating conditions such as response to speed command from standstill, step load torque application and speed variations, with nominal parameters and an changed rotor resistance, self inductance and inertia. Simulation results on a speed controller of induction motor are presented to show the effectiveness of the proposed gain tuner. And this controller is better than the fixed gains one in terms of robustness, even under great variations of operating conditions and load disturbance.

Fault detection and classification of permanent magnet synchronous machine using signal injection

  • Condition monitoring of permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs) and detecting faults such as eccentricity and demagnetization are essential for ensuring system reliability. Motor current signal analysis is the most commonly used precursor for detecting faults in the PMSM drive system. However, the current signature responds sensitively to the load and temperature of the motor, thereby making it difficult to monitor faults in real- applications. Therefore, in this study, a condition monitoring methodology that detects motor faults, including their classification with standstill conditions, is proposed. The objective is to detect and classify faults of PMSMs by using programmable inverter without additional sensors and systems for detection. Both DC and AC were applied through the d-axis of a three-phase motor, and the change in incremental inductance was investigated to detect and classify faults. Simulation with finite element analysis and experiments were performed on PMSMs in healthy conditions as well as with eccentricity and demagnetization faults. Based on the results obtained from experiments, the proposed method was confirmed to detect and classify types of faults, including their severity.

  • The water-cooled Permanent Magnet Linear Synchronous Motor (PMLSM) has a wide range of applications due to high efficiency, high thrust force density and high acceleration. In order to ensure normal operation and maximum output, both the magnetic and thermal performance are vital to be considered. Based on ANSYS software, electromagnetic and thermal finite-element analysis (FEA) models of a 14-pole, 12-slot water-cooled PMLSM are erected adopting suitable assumptions. Firstly, the thrust force and force ripple with different current densities are calculated. Secondly, the influence of different water flow on the motor heat dissipation and force performance under different operationional conditions are investigated and optimized. Furthermore, for continuous operation, the temperature rise and thrust feature are studied under the rated load 8A, the proper temperature $120^{\circ}C$ and the limited temperature $155^{\circ}C$. Likewise, for short-time operation, the maximum duration is calculated when applied with a certain large current. Similarly, for intermittent operation, load time as well as standstill time are determined with the optimal current to achieve better thrust performance.
