  • As the forefront of structural design method, capacity spectrum method can be applied conveniently, and through this method, deformation demand of structure can be considered. However, there is no research for the seismic application in the structure of sheet pile retaining wall to report. Therefore, focusing on laterally loaded stabilizing sheet pile wall, which belongs to flexible cantilever retaining structure and meets the applying requirement of capacity spectrum method from seismic design of building structure, this paper studied an approach of seismic design of sheet pile wall based on capacity spectrum method. In the procedure, the interaction between soil and structure was simplified, and through Pushover analysis, seismic fortification standard was well associated with performance of retaining structure. In addition, by comparing the result of nonlinear time history analysis, it suggests that this approach is applicable.

  • The existing capacity spectrum method (CSM) is based on the displacement based approach for seismic performance and evaluation. Currently, in the domestic and overseas standard concerning seismic design, the CSM to obtain capacity spectrum from capacity curve and demand spectrum from elastic response spectrum is presented. In the multistory building, collapse is affected more by drift than by displacement, but the existing CSM does not work for story drift. Therefore, this paper proposes an improved CSM to estimate story drift of structures through seismic performance and evaluation. It uses the ductility factor in the A-T domain to obtain constant-ductility response spectrum from earthquake response of inelastic system using the drift and capacity curve from capacity analysis of structure.

  • The present seismic analysis of Road-Bridge Design Standard is on a basis of load-based analysis which lets structures have the strength over load. In this study, the capacity spectrum method, a kind of displacement based method, which is evaluated by displacement of structure, is presented as an alternative to the analysis method based on load. Seismic capacity is performed about the existing reinforced concrete pier which has already secured seismic design by capacity spectrum method. As a result. capacity spectrum method could realistically evaluate the non-elastic behavior of structures easily and quickly and the displacement of structures for variable ground motion level. And it could efficiently apply to an evaluation of seismic capacity about the existing structure and a verification of design for capacity target of the new structure.

  • A ground-motion prediction equation (GMPE) for the Korean Peninsula, especially for South Korea, is developed based on synthetic ground motions generated using a ground motion model derived from instrumental records from 11 recent earthquakes of $M_L$>4.5 in Korea, including the Gyeongju earthquake of Sept. 12. 2016 ($M_L$5.8). PSAs of one standard deviation from the developed GMPE with $M_W$ 6.5 at hypocentral distances of 15 km and 25 km are compared to the design spectrum (soil condition, $S_B$) of the Korean Building Code 2016 (KBC), indicating that: (1) PSAs at short periods around 0.2 sec can be 1.5 times larger than the corresponding KBC PSA, and (2) SD's at periods longer than 2 sec do not exceed 8 cm. Although this comparison of the design spectrum with those of the GMPE developed herein intends to identify the characteristics of the scenario earthquake in a lower-seismicity region such as South Korea, it does not mean that the current design spectrum should be modified accordingly. To develop a design spectrum compatible with the Korean Peninsula, more systematic research using probabilistic seismic hazard analysis is necessary in the future.

  • This study reviews the status and validity of seismic design criteria (SDC) for major facilities in Korea, which are composed of performance criteria and technical standard. Various facilities with different seismic design response spectra are analyzed to identify their seismic performance and necessity of eventual retrofit. The results are used to derive improvement directions of SDC. It is also concluded that the technical standard should be improved after the revision of the performance criteria.

  • Due to the bandwidth and storage limitations medical images are needed to be compressed before transmission and storage. DICOM (Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine) specification, which is the medical images standard, provides a mechanism for supporting the use of JPEG still image compression standard. In this paper, we explain a method for compressing medical images by PEG standard and propose two methods for JPEG compression. First, because medical images differ from natural images in optical feature, we propose a method to design adaptively the quantization table using spectrum analysis. Second, because medical images have higher pixel depth than natural images do, we propose a method to design Huffman table which considers the probability distribution feature of symbols. Simulation results show the improved performance compared to the quantization table and the adjusted Huffman table of JPEG standard.

  • Recently, as the heterogeneous network (HetNet) has been deployed widely to support various kinds of Radio Access Networks(RANs) with a combination of Macro, Pico, and/or Femto cells, research and standardization efforts have been very active regarding the concept of Licensed Shared Access (LSA) for supporting spectrum sharing. In order for a mobile device to efficiently support the spectrum sharing, the mobile device shall be reconfigurable, meaning that its radio application code has to be adaptively changed in accordance with the hopping of desired spectral band. Especially, Working Group 2 (WG2) of Technical Committee (TC) Reconfigurable Radio System (RRS) of European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) has been a main driving force for developing standard architecture for Multi-mode Mobile Device (MD) that can be applied to the LSA system. In this paper, we introduce the Multi-mode MD architecture for supporting LSA-based spectrum sharing. An implementation of a test-bed of Multi-mode MD is presented in order to verify the feasibility of the standard MD architecture for the purpose of LSA-based spectrum sharing through various experimental tests.

  • Spectrum spreading, in its general form, can be conceived as an artificial expansion of the signal bandwidth with respect to the minimum Nyquist band required to transmit the desired information. Spreading can be functional to several objectives, including resilience to interference and jammers and reduction of power spectral density levels. In the paper, signal spreading is manly used for increasing the received energy, thus satisfying link budget constraints, for terminals with low aperture antennas, without increasing the transmitted EIRP. As a matter of fact, in many mobile scenarios, even when MODCOD configurations with very low spectral efficiency (i.e. QPSK-1/4) in DVB-S2 standard, are used, the link budget cannot be closed. Spectrum spreading has been recently proposed as a technique to improve system performance without introducing additional MODCOD configurations under the constraint of fixed power spectrum density level at the transmitter side. To this aim, the design of spectrum spreading techniques shall keep into consideration requirements such as spectrum mask, physical layer performance, link budget, hardware reuse, robustness, complexity, and backward compliance with existing commercial equipments. The proposed implementation allows to fully reuse the standard DVB-S2 circuitry and is inserted as an 'inner layer' in the standard DVB-S2 chain.

  • A comprehensive research effort in order to develop and disseminate modernized Korean housing (Hanok) has recently been initiated by Korean government. This large scale research project encompasses a wide spectrum of housing development including public policy, architectural plans, modules, construction materials and methods, prefabricated assemblies, automated production, construction management, and advanced information systems. For the purpose of integrating and automating the whole processes from an industry perspective, it is of great importance to develop a standard classification system and project numbering system (PNS) for the modernized Korean housing. This paper focuses on the standard classification systems and PNS for cost and schedule control. The distinct characteristics and managerial requirements were explored and embedded into the proposed classifications for modernized Hanok.
