  • The stability condition of rock slopes is greatly affected by the geometry and strength parameters of discontinuities in the rock masses. Rock slopes Involving movement of rock blocks on discontinuities are failed by one or combination of the three basic failure modes-plane, wedge, and toppling. In rock mechanics, practically all the parameters such as the joint set characteristics, the rock strength properties, and the loading conditions are always subject to a degree of uncertainty. Therefore, a reasonable assessment of the rock slope stability has to include the excavation of the multi-failure modes, the consideration of uncertainties of discontinuity characteristics, and the decision on stabilization measures with favorable cost conditions. This study was performed to provide a new numerical model of the deterministic analysis, reliability analysis, and reliability-based optimization for rock slope stability. The sensitivity analysis was carried out to verify proposed method and developed program; the parameters needed for sensitivity analysis are design variables, the variability of discontinuity properties (orientation and strength of discontinuities), the loading conditions, and rock slope geometry properties. The design variables to be optimized by the reliability-based optimization include the cutting angle, the support pressure, and the slope direction. The variability in orientations and friction angle of discontinuities, which can not be considered in the deterministic analysis, has a greatly influenced on the rock slope stability. The stability of rock slopes considering three basic failure modes is more influenced by the selection of slope direction than any other design variables. When either plane or wedge failure is dominant, the support system is more useful than the excavation as a stabilization method. However, the excavation method is more suitable when toppling failure is dominant. The case study shows that the developed reliability-based optimization model can reasonably assess the stability of rock slopes and reduce the construction cost.

  • This study aimed to examine the most effective exercise method for shoulder joint rehabilitation by comparatively observing activity of shoulder stabilizer muscles during push up and push up plus exercises under diverse stable conditions. The subjects were 20 healthy adults students who went to M university. While the subjects conducted push up and push up plus exercises under diverse stable conditions(a stable surface, a support of 25cm height, a support of 30 cm height and a balance pad), activities of the upper trapezius muscle, pectoralis major muscle, serratus anterior muscle, and triceps brachii muscle were recorded. During push up and push up plus exercises, activities of the stabilizer muscles were higher when the stable condition was changed rather than on the stable surface. In particular, when the support of 30cm height and balance pads were applied, activity of the shoulder stabilizer was highest. There were significant differences in the upper trapezius muscle and triceps brachii muscle during the push up exercise(p<.05) and in the serratus anterior muscle during the push up plus exercise(p<.05). Activities of the shoulder stabilizers were higher when the upper and lower limbs' surface stable conditions were changed than the stable surface. Therefore, when programs for rehabilitation of shoulder joints are applied, provision of diverse stable conditions according to patients' conditions will be effective methods.

  • When a flame is stabilized in a tube of a finite thickness, a conductive heat transfer through the tube significantly changes the wall temperature and affects the flame characteristics. Thus the tube length and thermal boundary conditions affect on the structure of the flame in a conductive tube. A one-dimensional analytical study was conducted by employing two energy equations for tubes and mixtures and a species equation for the mixture. Variation of the maximum temperatures and indicating displacements were observed. A parametric study on the effects of inner Peclet numbers, normalized wall conductivities, and heat transfer conditions of the tube was conducted. This study provides essential data for a more efficient computational simulation of the flame stabilized in conductive tubes.

  • The ride comfort is more important according to train speedup. Generally it is defined as the vehicle vibration. There are many studies on evaluation method of ride comfort for railway. In the case of Korean high speed train(HSR 350x), the ride comfort has been assessed by statistical method according to UIC 513R. To verify the design requirements for the performance of HSR 350x, the qualification tests had been conducted from August 19, 2002 to December 2004 and the stabilization and reliability tests are carried out nowadays. Up to December 2006, total test runs and the accumulated milage of the train were 357 times and 164,000km, respectively. A total of 352 ride indices had been acquired through the on-line test from Aug. 2002 to Dec. 2006. In this paper, we have reviewed the characteristics of ride comfort for HSR 350x according to the operational conditions, such as load and track conditions, season and used time, by using the tests data.

  • A premixed flame propagating in a tube suffers strong variation in its shape and structure depending on boundary conditions. The effects of thermal boundary conditions and flow fields on flame propagation are numerically investigated. Navier-Stokes equations and species equations are solved with a one-step irreversible global reaction model of methane-air mixture. Finite volume method using an adaptive grid method is applied to investigate the flame structure. In the case of an adiabatic wall, friction force on the wall significantly affected the flame structure while in the case of an isothermal wall, local quenching near the wall dominated flame shapes and propagation. In both cases, variations of flow fields occurred not only in the near field of the flame but also within the flame itself, which affected propagation velocities. This study provides an overview of the characteristics of flames in small tubes at a steady state.

  • The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport established safety standards for Level 3 autonomous vehicles for the first time in the world in December 2019, and specified the safety standards for conditional autonomous driving systems. Accordingly, it is necessary to analyze the influence of various driving environments on take-over. In this study, using a driving simulator, we investigated how traffic conditions and weather conditions affect take-over time and stabilization time. The experimental procedure was conducted in the order of preliminary training, practice driving, and test driving, and the test driving was conducted by dividing into a traffic density and geometry experiment and a weather environment experiment. As a result of the experiment, it was analyzed that the traffic volume and weather environment did not affect the take-over time and take-over stabilization time, and only the curve radius affects take-over stabilization time.

  • This paper is concerned with the design of robust state feedback controller for a class of linear time-delay systems with norm-bounded nonlinear uncertainties. Under the proposed delay-independent criterion, asymptotic stability for the system is investigated using the conventional Lyapunov method. Moreover, the robust controller can be obtained by solving the linear matrix inequality which is equivalent to the suggested conditions.

  • This paper proposes a new linear robust state feedback controller for the linear discrete time systems which have uncertainties in the state and input matrices. The uncertainties need not satisfy the matching conditions, but only their bounds are needed to be known. The proposed controller is derived from the linear quadratic game problem, which solution is obtained via the modified algebraic Riccati equation. The controller guarantees the robust performance bound. The bound of the solution and the condition of the uncertainties, which can stabilize the uncertain system are explored.
