In this paper, the influence of fibre orientation and aspect ratio on stability analysis of simply supported skew plates subjected to in plane loading is studied by using a four noded hybrid plate finite element. The formulation of the element is based on Hellinger-Reissner variational principle. The element is developed by combining a hybrid plane stress element and a hybrid plate element. Some numerical problems are solved and the effects of skew angle, aspect ratio, fibre orientation and loading type on the critical buckling loads are highlighted.
This paper devotes to the study of a diffusive model for unstirred membrane reactors with maintenance energy subject to a homogeneous Neumann boundary condition. It shows that the unique constant steady state is globally asymptotically stable when it exists. This result further implies the non-existence of the non-uniform steady state solution.
The results of measurements of shear current induced in water by wind in wind wave tunnel are presented briefly. The shear current distributions are found to fit reasonably well an exponentiall form. This form was used to estimate surface velocity and boundary layer thickness used in stability analysis. An analysis of hydrodynamic stability of the shear current was carried out, using a broken line as an approximate profile, to see the stability as a possible mechanism of wind wave generation. Comparison between experimental results and theoretical ones shows that there exists a large discrepancy particularly in phase velocity and hydrodynamic instability of the shear current seems not to be the basic mechanism of wind wave generation.
In this paper, we will consider the periodic stationary Stokes equations on Rn. For the cube of the period, we set Ω = ∏ni=1(0, Li). And we will study the stability of the solutions on various functional spaces, for the Stokes equations on Rn.
Three-dimensional slope stability analysis was applied to a failed dual-lithology slope containing both granite and an andesitic dyke, taking account of the differences in shear strength of the different lithologies. A direct shear test of the soil-rock boundary was performed to examine the shear strength of two different types of failure surfaces within different lithologies, and a laboratory test was performed on an upper, weathered soil layer. The test results indicate that shear strength was lower at the soil-rock boundary than within the weathered soil layer. A representative geological section was subjected to two-dimensional slope stability analysis using a limit equilibrium method to assess whether the distribution of lithologies upon the slope influences the results of stability analysis. The results were then compared with those of three-dimensional slope stability analysis, for which input parameters can be varied according to the distribution of lithologies upon the slope. The three-dimensional analysis yielded safety factors of 1.26 under dry conditions and 0.55 under wet conditions, whereas the two-dimensional analysis yielded unstable safety factors of 0.92 and 0.32, respectively. These findings show that the results of stability analysis are affected by the distribution of different lithologies upon the slope. Given that the studied slope collapsed immediately after rainfall, it is likely that the results of the three-dimensional analysis are more reliable.
The stability assessment of a concrete liner of a compressed air storage tunnel should be performed by an approach which is different from that commonly used for the liners of road tunnels, since the liner is exposed to high air pressure. In this study, the stability analysis method for the liner of compressed air storage tunnel is proposed based on the elastic and elasto-plastic solutions of the thick-walled cylinder problem. In case of elastic analysis, the yield initiation condition at the inner boundary is considered as the failure condition of the liner, while the condition which results in the extension of yielding zone to a certain depth is taken as a failure indicator of the liner in the elasto-plastic analysis taking Mohr-Coulomb criterion. The application of the proposed method revealed that the influence of the relative magnitude of boundary loads on the stability of liner is considerable. In particular, noting that the estimation of the outer boundary load may be relatively difficult, it is thought that the precise prediction of outer boundary load is very important in the analysis. Accordingly, the emphasis is put on the selection of the liner installation time, which may govern the magnitude of outer boundary load.

The wave-propagation phenomenon in an infinite medium has been used to describe the physics in many fields of engineering and natural science. Analytical or numerical methods have been developed to obtain solutions to problems related to the wave-propagation phenomenon. Energy radiation into infinite regions must be accurately considered for accurate solutions to these problems; hence, various numerical and mechanical models as well as boundary conditions have been developed. This paper proposes a new boundary condition that can be applied to scalar-wave or horizontally-polarized shear-wave (or SH-wave) propagation problems in layered waveguides. A governing equation is obtained for the SH waves by applying finite-element discretization in the vertical direction of the waveguide and subsequently modified to derive the boundary condition for the infinite region of the waveguide. Using the orthogonality of the eigenmodes for the SH waves in a layered waveguide, the new boundary condition is shown to be equivalent to the existing root-finding absorbing boundary condition; further, the accuracy is shown to increase with the degree of the new boundary condition, and its stability can be proven. The accuracy and stability are then demonstrated by applying the proposed boundary condition to wave-propagation problems in layered waveguides.
In this paper a boundary element method is developed for the general flexural-torsional buckling analysis of Timoshenko beams of arbitrarily shaped cross section. The beam is subjected to a compressive centrally applied concentrated axial load together with arbitrarily axial, transverse and torsional distributed loading, while its edges are restrained by the most general linear boundary conditions. The resulting boundary value problem, described by three coupled ordinary differential equations, is solved employing a boundary integral equation approach. All basic equations are formulated with respect to the principal shear axes coordinate system, which does not coincide with the principal bending one in a nonsymmetric cross section. To account for shear deformations, the concept of shear deformation coefficients is used. Six coupled boundary value problems are formulated with respect to the transverse displacements, to the angle of twist, to the primary warping function and to two stress functions and solved using the Analog Equation Method, a BEM based method. Several beams are analysed to illustrate the method and demonstrate its efficiency and wherever possible its accuracy. The range of applicability of the thin-walled theory and the significant influence of the boundary conditions and the shear deformation effect on the buckling load are investigated through examples with great practical interest.
The Helmholtz equation represents acoustic or electromagnetic scattering phenomena. The Method of Lines are known to have many advantages in simulation of forward and inverse scattering problems due to the usage of angle rays and Bessel functions. However, the method does not account for the jump phenomena on obstacle boundary and the approximation includes many high order Bessel functions. The high order Bessel functions have extreme blow-up or die-out features in resonance region obstacle boundary. Therefore, in particular, when we consider shape reconstruction problems, the method is suffered from severe instabilities due to the logical confliction and the severe singularities of high order Bessel functions. In this paper, two approximation formulas for the Helmholtz equation are introduced. The formulas are new and powerful. The derivation is based on Method of Lines, Huygen's principle, boundary jump relations, Addition Formula, and the orthogonality of the trigonometric functions. The formulas reduce the approximation dimension significantly so that only lower order Bessel functions are required. They overcome the severe instability near the obstacle boundary and reduce the computational time significantly. The convergence is exponential. The formulas adopt the scattering jump phenomena on the boundary, and separate the boundary information from the measured scattered fields. Thus, the sensitivities of the scattered fields caused by the boundary changes can be analyzed easily. Several numerical experiments are performed. The results show the superiority of the proposed formulas in accuracy, efficiency, and stability.
Loads applied on the floor are transferred through beams to columns. The beams can be designed as both end fixed or simple beams. The load bearing capacity of a beam depends on each boundary condition. However, when the load bearing capacity of a beam is evaluated in fire tests, all kinds of beams are tested using simple beam conditions. In this study, an analytical method performed using heat transfer theory and heat stress analysis based on the mechanical and thermal properties of SS-400 steel at high temperature. This method was used to clarify the differences between the two types of boundary conditions at normal and high temperature. The results show that the load bearing capacity of a both-end fixed beam at high temperature is superior to that of a simple beam. Therefore, the application of simple beam conditions in fire tests for evaluation of load bearing capacity is conservatively safe compared to fixed boundary conditions.
