  • In this paper, we have designed the VHDL module of DS/SS QPSK wireless modem processor for digital data communication. The spread spectrum method is used for modern processor, because this method guarantees good frequency efficiency and higher security. Also, it guarantees good performance in digital communication system under multi-path interferences. The differential encoder and decoder are used for simple circuit composition in the signal detection. For the synchronization of receiver, matched filter and power detector are used. And the IF modulation/demodulation of QPSK method is used in the digital level. The transmitter of VHDL modem processor consists of differential encoder, PN code generator, and QPSK ...

  • This paper presents a Doppler shift estimation method and signal processing schemes for Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum (DSSS) transmission to overcome the Doppler shift due to the moving of the underwater communication unit. The proposed method estimates a Doppler shift via 2 step procedures using the preamble with the two 64-length Frank sequences which has a good self-correlation characteristic and is insensitive to the Doppler shift. Furthermore, a packet of DSSS underwater mobile communication and a RAKE receiver are designed using the proposed Doppler shift estimation method. Due to the modulation scheme of the designed DSSS underwater mobile communication using Differential-Quadrature Phase Shift Keying (DQPSK) for the data symbol transmission, the RAKE receiver dose not need a phase tracking and easily makes coherent signals among the combining RAKE branches. The designed RAKE receiving scheme including the proposed Doppler shift estimation method successfully decides information data using the DSSS signal transmitted from the pseudo-moving transmitter with velocity upto about 17.5 m/s.

  • In the direct sequence spread spectrum system, the correct synchronization is very important; hence, several acquisition schemes based on the sequential estimation have been developed. Typically, the rapid acquisition sequential estimation (RASE) scheme, the seed accumulating sequential estimation (SASE) scheme, the recursive soft sequential estimation (RSSE) scheme have been developed for the correct acquisition. However, the objective performance comparison and analysis between former estimation schemes have not been performed so far. In this paper, we compare and analyze the performance of the above sequential estimation schemes by simulating the correct chip probability and the mean acquisition time (MAT).

  • In this paper, we derive the channel capacity in order to transmit an additional data by using digital watermarking method in generalized-K fading channel. Spread spectrum watermarking is one of the digital watermarking methods which is the most promising technique due to it's very robustness to the channel noise and easy achieving of the signal detection by correlators at the receiver. It is important to analyze the channel capacity to transmit an additional data through wireless channel because the transmitted data would be affected by the channel fading effects. From the results, we confirm that the channel capacity of the SSW system can be determined by the HWR, WNR, PN length and host sampling frequency. Also, we verified that the level of HWR and WNR can be determined by the derived capacity formula. The results of this paper can be applied to general spread spectrum watermarking system.

  • This paper presented an efficient transceiver structure of multiband Frequency Shift Keying (FSK) signals with direct sequence spread spectrum for maintaining covertness and performance. In aspect to covertness, direct sequence spread spectrum method, which multiplying by Pseudo Noise (PN) codes whose rate is much higher than that of data sequence, is employed. In aspect to performance, in order to overcome performance degradation caused by multipath and Doppler spreading, we applied multiband, turbo equalization, and weighting algorithm are applied. Based on the simulation results, by applying 4 number of multiband and number of chips are 8 and 32, experiments were conducted in a lake with a distance of moving from 300 m to 500 m between the transceivers. we confirmed that the performance was improved as the number of bands and chips are increased. Furthermore, the performance of multiband was improved when the proposed weighting algorithm was applied.

  • In this paper, a wavelet transform-based adaptive interference excision scheme using the adaptive algorithm which suppresses narrow band interference in the wavelet transform domain for the direct spread modulation system application, is introduced. Using the Monte-Carlo simulation, the bit error probabilities of the direct spread communication systems with the excision systems of two kinds of Daubechies wavelets (db2, db8) in the transform domain, are analysed. With these results, it is shown that the performance of a system depends on the characteristics of wavelet being used. And with this scheme, we expect effective improvements in the direct spread communication system performance.

  • A receiver architecture with low complexity for chirp spread spectrum (CSS) of IEEE 802.15.4a is proposed. To demodulate the received signal at the highest signal to noise power ratio, matched filter is generally adopted for the receiver of wireless communication systems. It is, however, not resonable to adjust the matched filter to the receiver of CSS whose objectives are low complexity, low cost and low power consumption since complexity of the matched filter is high. In this paper, we propose a new receiver architecture using differential multiplication and accumulator not matched filter for demodulation. Also, bi-orthogonal decoder implemented by only adder/subtractor is proposed. The hardware resources for implementation are reduced in the proposed receiver architecture, although bit error rate performance is low compared with the receiver architecture based on the matched filter.

  • The main drawback of the multi-code spread spectrum communication system, which spreads data bits stream by the multiplexed orthogonal codes, is the need for the highly linear amplifier. Several constant amplitude precoding schemes have been proposed for the Walsh code or the extended $m$-sequence based multi-code spread spectrum systems. In the constant amplitude spread spectrum systems the accompany code is transmitted together with orthogonal codes to maintain the transmitter output in a constant level. In this paper we propose the use of the accompany in the receiver to improve the BER performance. The proposed receiver has the capability to correct the code detection error(up to one code error). We carried out simulations to verify the validity of the proposed algorithm. BER performance improvement was noticed compared with the conventional receiver.

  • This paper presents the results of a sea trial for long range underwater acoustic communication conducted in the East Sea in November 2020. Signals were collected through a moving transmitter and 16 vertically arranged receivers, and the range between the transmitter and receiver was about 20 km. The signal in the experiment is a conventional Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum (DSSS) method and a superimposed DSSS method that increases data rate by superimposing of multiple circulated Pseudo Noise (PN) sequences for each symbol. The results show that the uncoded bit error rate averaged over 16 channels to which the channel coding technique was not applied was 0.0005 for the conventional direct sequence spreading method, and was 0.00124 for the superimposed direct sequence spreading method.
