A full-length cDNA and genomic DNA of a $leucoanthocyanidin$$dioxygenase$ ($DgLDOX$) gene was isolated from the petals of chrysanthemum 'Argus', and comparative features of the gene among three flower color mutants derived from a gamma-ray mutagenesis were characterized. The cDNA coding region of the gene was 1068 bp and was translated into 356 amino acids accordingly. The genomic DNA size was 1346 bp for 'Argus', while three mutants revealed ranges of 1363 to 1374 bp. A single intron between two coding exons for the $DgLDOX$ gene was found, of which size was 112 bp for 'Argus', but 128 or 137 bp for three flower color mutants, indicating that a genomic insertion in the intron occurred during the gamma-ray mutagenesis. DNA blot analysis revealed the $DgLDOX$ gene presenting as a single copy in the chrysanthemum genome. The $DgLDOX$ gene was expressed in both 'Argus' of light-pink color and two purple color mutants (AM1 and AM3) but had very weak expression in only white color mutant (AM2). The results demonstrated that variations in the flower color of the mutants might be associated with changes in the amino acid moieties in the coding exons or fragment insertions in the intron of the $DgLDOX$ gene, which potentially resulted in less expression of the gene in the white colored mutant.

This study was conducted to improve the consumption of floriculture plants by researching preferences of consumers for the main types of cut flowers. We analyzed the results of surveys, carried out by a company, that were largely about roses, chrysanthemums, and lilies. After departmentalizing consumers into groups and analyzing the results through conjoint and cluster analysis, we found that consumers showed a higher rate of use based on price and vase life than on flower color and flower shape in roses. The groups of rose consumers preferred a price of 1000 won, spray type flower shape, vase life of 7-8 days, and red flower color. In chrysanthemums, consumers showed higher rate of use for flower color than for vase life, flower shape, and price. The groups of chrysanthemum consumers preferred a price of 1000 won, standard flower shape, 16-20 days vase life, and yellow flower color. In lilies, consumers showed higher use rate for flower shape than vase life, price, and flower color. Lily consumers preferred a price of 2000 won, large flower shape, 4-7 days vase life, and yellow flower color. Thus, the major cut flowers (rose, chrysanthemum, and lily) all showed highest use rates in for vase life. These results highlight the importance of understanding the characteristics of consumer interests. They also emphasize that we should plan and create market-oriented and consumer-oriented products to improve the consumption of floriculture plants.
A new spary chrysanthemum (Dendranthema grandiflorum) cultivar 'Pinky' was bred from a cross between 'Rima' and 'Yen'. Progenies were investigated from 2004 to 2006 under shading culture in spring and retarding culture in autumn and the promising line was selected based on the performance of year-round production, white rust resistance and vase life. Pinky flowered around 20 October, and year-round production was possible by shading and lighting. Its flower was 3.1 cm in diameter, and had 38.4 petals and 26.8 flowers per stem in autumn. Its petal was narrow (0.4 cm) and pink with green in color at the flower center. Days to flower from short-day start for 'Pinky' was about 47 in spring. 'Pinky' showed a vase life of 20.9 days in autumn. This cultivar was commercially registered in 2007. 'Pinky' would be suitable for culture under the greenhouse and rain shelter condition in Korea.
A new spary chrysanthemum (Dendranthema grandiflorum) cultivar 'Yellow Eye' was developed from a cross between 'Angela' and 'Angaesoguk' followed by selections of seedlings and lines at the Flower Research Institute, Gyeongnam Agricultural Research and Extension Services (ARES) from 2003 to 2007. Its characteristics were investigated three times from 2005 to 2007 under forcing culture in spring and retarding culture in autumn. The natural flowering time of 'Yellow Eye' was October 24th, but year-round production was possible by shading and lighting. Its flower was 3.3 cm in diameter, and had 31.7 petals and 27.9 flowers per stem in autumn. It has pollenless, single type flowers with yellow petals and green flower center. To flower in under the short day condition, for 'Yellow Eye' was about 41 days in spring, and 'Yellow Eye' showed a vase life of 23.1 days in autumn. This cultivar was registered for a commercialization in 2007. 'Yellow Eye' would be cultured under the greenhouse and rain shelter condition in Korea.

Greenhouse whitefly, $Trialeurodes$$Vaporariorum$, is the most important insect pest in environmental friendly tomato production. Natural enemies, $Nesidiocoris$$tenuis$ and environmental friendly agricultural materials (EFAM) are major control agents in Korea. The aim of the present work is to evaluate release time of $N.$$tenuis$ in controlling of $T.$$vaporariorum$ and to select environmental friendly agricultural materials (EFAM) to suppress both $T.$$vaporariorum$ and $N.$$tenuis$ which if the density were high causing necrotic rings. Six EFAM selected to control of $Trialeurodes$$Vaporariorum$ in three times spray with seven days intervals. Three EFAM showed high mortality 67.7-70.5% in spray after release plot but low in release after spray plot. It should be careful to spray with $N.$$tenuis$. When $N.$$tenuis$ were early release at 7 days after transplanting which before occurring and establishment of greenhouse whitefly, it could suppress the density. Extracts of bead tree + matrin, matrin 1, Chrysanthemum showed high mortality on $T.$$vaporariorum$ adults and $N.$$tenuis$. The results suggested that this three EFAM could be control agents of the damage of necrotic rings from $N.$$tenuis$.
This study was conducted to enhance the stem firmness of standard chrysanthemum 'Baekma' bred in Korea for commercial quality improvement and inhibition of stem breaking during transportation through foliar spray with calcium agents. Calcium agent screening 'Baekma' was examined using $CaCl_2{\cdot}2H_2O$, $Ca(NO_3)_2{\cdot}4H_2O$, and OS-Ca (natural liquid calcium compounds extracted from oyster shell) depending on each concentration (0, 0.001, 0.01, 0.1, and 1.0%, respectively). All calcium agents sprayed with 1.0% caused chemical injury such as stem bending or leaf burn. OS-Ca also showed more sensitive response to chemical injury than the other calcium agents because OS-Ca was absorbed very well by 'Baekma' leaves. Maximum stem firmness measured during the final harvest was greater in OS-Ca than in the other calcium agents. Especially, maximum stem firmness was greatest in 0.01% OS-Ca. However, elastic strength and maximum bending stress were greater in 0.001% OS-Ca than in the others. Thus, OS-Ca ranged from 0.005 to 0.05%, which did not show any chemical injury, was finally selected as the first candidate for hardening the stem of 'Baekma'. The next experiment using OS-Ca was conducted with the concentrations of 0, 0.005, 0.01, and 0.05%, respectively. From the results, 0.05% OS-Ca showed better plant growth and parameters such as plant height, stem diameter (upper and middle part), the number of leaves, and dry weights of each part than the other concentrations of OS-Ca and control. As for stem firmness depending on OS-Ca concentration, the Ca content within stem, maximum firmness, elastic strength, and maximum bending stress of stem in 'Baekma' sprayed with 0.05% OS-Ca showed the highest values among all the treatments and it turned out to be very high level of significance between control and OS-Ca treatments. However, the area and percentage of the inside cavity within horizontal stem section in 'Baekma' did not show any significance between any treatments including control. Thus, stem firmness of 'Baekma' did not show any correlation with the inside cavity area of stem. In conclusion, we recommend foliar sprays with 0.05% OS-Ca at vegetative growth stage to enhance stem firmness of 'Baekma' during transportation.
The flowering locus T (FT) gene, of which expression will be controlled at high temperature by heat shock promoter (it printed as to HSproFT), was introduced into spray-type chrysanthemum (Dendranthema grandiflorum (Ramat.) Kitamura) 2 cultivars ('Pink PangPang' and 'Pink Pride' by co-cultivation with Agrobacterium tumefaciens strain C58C1 harboring pCAMBIA2300 containing the HSproFT gene. After leaf segments of the 2 cultivars were infected with the A. tumafaciens with C58C1 as explants, shoots were regenerated from the explants cultured on the $1^{st}$ selection medium (MS basal salts + 1.0 mg/L BA, 0.5 mg/L IAA + 10 mg/L kanamycin + 0.7% plant agar, pH 5.8). The shoots were transferred into the $2^{nd}$ selection medium (MS basal salts + 1.0 mg/L BA, 0.5 mg/L IAA + 20 mg/L kanamycin + 0.7% plant agar, pH 5.8). One hundred seventeen plantlets from 'Pink PangPang' and 5 ones from 'Pink Pride' were confirmed as transformants by PCR analysis. Twenty six of the transformants and non-transformants were acclimatized and established well in a green house. Eights of 26 transgenic lines showed flower bud 1.7~10 days earlier than nontransgenic plants, and 24 of them flowered 1~6 days earlier than non- transgenic plants. The shape and color of flower of all HSproFT-transgenic lines were not different with those of non- transgenic plants.
The statistical analyses of coefficient of variation, heritability, and genetic advance were carried out to identify differences in morphological characteristics, such as the stem and inflorescence length, of 10 major commercial cultivars of spray chrysanthemum (Chrysanthemum morifolium). For morphological characteristics, stem lengths ranged from 46.4 cm to 54.9 cm, the maximum diameter of stem was 5.6 to 8.5 mm, the hardness of the stem was 0.17 to $0.70kg{\cdot}m^{-2}$, the fresh weight of stem was 7.5 to 17.5 g, the dry weight of the stem was 1.6 to 3.3 g, the ratio of dry weight/fresh weight of stem was 15.9% to 23.1%. Also, the number of leaves on the stem was 8.4 to 12.2, the stem leaf area was 17.8 to $37.8m^2$, the fresh weight stem leaves was 5.3 to 18.6 g, the dry weight was 0.5 to 1.4 g and the ratio of dry weight /fresh weight of stem leaves was 7.6% to 11.5%. The inflorescence length ranged from 10.1 to 18.6 cm, the fresh weight of inflorescence was 7.3 to 26.7 g, the dry weight of inflorescence was 1.2 to 2.8 g, the ratio of dry weight /fresh weight of inflorescence was 10.4% to 17.1%. For flower, the diameter of the flower center was 8.2 to 13.3 mm, the petal width was 5.7 to 14.0 mm, the petal length was 12.9 to 33.1 mm, and the petal thickness was 157.8 to $354.4{\mu}m$. The mean values of each character in each cultivar were very different, and DMRT and LSD values based on morphological characteristics among 10 cultivars were highly significant. For variability and genetic parameters, the lowest CV (coefficient of variation), PCV (phenotypic coefficient of variation), and GCV (genotypic coefficient of variation) were 4.79% to 5.15% in stem length, and the highest variations were 62.97% to 65.21% in leaf area. ECV (error or environmental coefficient of variation) was the lowest for leaf area (1.71%) and it was the highest for leaf dry weight (19.30%). Heritability also significantly differed among the characteristics, ranging from 68.69% to 99.67%, the lowest value was shown in ratio of dry weight /fresh weight of stem and the highest value was for leaf area of stem. The value for genetic advance was the lowest in hardness of stem at 0.30 and the highest in leaf thickness at 156.65. The lowest genetic advance as percentage of mean of stem hardness was 9.17%, while the highest percentage of stem length was 134.27%. Thus the characters which had the highest values indicated above show the influence of additive gene action and may provide useful resources for selection programs for agronomic improvement.
'Secret Pink' was released by National Institute of Horticultural & Herbal Science in 2008. The cross was made between '03B1-23' and 'Sei-Monaco in 2005'. After the evaluation of the characteristics under shade culture in summer and retarding culture in spring and consecutive selection from 2006 to 2008, 'Secret Pink' was selected finality. The natural flowering time of 'Secret Pink' was the middle of October, and it is possible to flower all year round by shade and light culture. It has single type flowers with pink petals. The growth of plant was very vigorous and response time was 6.5 weeks. The diameter of flower was 6.7 cm. Number of flowers per stem and petals per flower were 14.5 and 25, respectively. Days to flowering under the short day treatment was about 50 and its vase life was 25.5 days in autumn season.

This study was conducted to investigate the involvement of flower abnormality and S-adenosyl-L-homocysteine hydrolase (SAHH), which is one of the key enzyme in the maintenance of methylation. Plants exposed to high temperature (HT) and long day (LD) condition from 14-27days after short day (SD) produced abnormal flower, having numbers of ray florets. Numbers of ray florets were increased more than 2 folds by HT of $35/20^{\circ}C$ and LD of 14 hour comparing those of $25/20^{\circ}C$ (12 h/12 h). Full-length cDNA clone of S-adenosyl-L-homocysteine hydrolase (DgSAHH) in spray chrysanthemum 'Lerbin' contained an 1455 bp open reading frame coding for 485 amino acids. It showed highly conserved coding sequences among the different plant species with over 90% homology. DgSAHH expression was decreased in abnormal flower inducing treatment of HT and LD, while DgSAHH transcripts accumulated in flower bud of non abnormality inducing condition. This result implicate that DgSAHH expression is affected by temperature and photoperiod during flower development and suppression of DgSAHH is a one of the cause of abnormal flower under HT and LD condition.
