  • This study examines the influence of smartphone use in old age on satisfaction with relationships with spouse, children and social acquaintances among Korean older adults. Data on older adults aged 60 and over, who live in Seoul, was collected through a questionnaire survey and 674 cases were analyzed. The effects of smartphone use on satisfaction with these three types of inter-personal relationships was tested using a multiple regression analysis, controlling for sex, age, marital status, education, employment status, income and health. The results showed that the smartphone use of older adults did not affect spouse relationship satisfaction, but positively affected both children relationship satisfaction and satisfaction with social acquaintance relationship in old age. This suggests that the positive effects of smartphone use on inter-personal relationships in old age work only to improve relationships with children and social acquaintances, but not to enhance the relationship with one's spouse. This study implies that practical efforts to enhance the smartphone use and the level of informatization among older adults are needed to improve the inter-personal relationships and quality of life in old age.

  • This study examines a pattern of family caregiving and its effect on life satisfaction of disabled elderly people. Data were gathered through the use of face-to-face interview method from a sample of 135 elderly aged over 60. One-third of the elderly respondents have no family caregiver. Most of caregivers provide routine household chores and physical help, but persnal care such as bathing and changing clothes was taken by elderly people themselves. The caregiver in an elderly couple is most likely the wife. When a spouse is unavailable, daughters-in law usually assume the role of a primary caregiver. Sex difference has been found in the most comfortable caregiver for the elderly. The most comfortable caregiver for the elderly men is shown to be their spouse, whereas the one for the elderly women is show to be their daughter-in-law. Most of the disabled elderly are emotionally dependent on their son(usually their eldest son), but physically dependent on their spouse, daughter-in-law, or daughter. The caregivers are dominated by women. Among those elderly receiving care from their children, the relationship between the aged their caregiver is found to be closer than the past when the aged were healthy: however, this relationship is found to be almost the same as the past among those elderly receiving care from their spouse. Finally, the degree of family solidarity, satisfaction with received cares, and the relationship with caregivers are found to be closely related to life satisfaction of the elderly respondents.

  • This research aims at finding out how spare time activity, relationships with their children and loneliness affect the satisfaction of life of elderly people who have no spouse. To begin, according to the survey, in the case of elderly people who have no spouse, male elderly people feel more loneliness, lower unification with their offspring, and do less activity in their spare time than female elderly people. The elderly people with a higher educational level, feel less loneliness and have a close relationship with their offspring. When elderly people believe in a religion, they participate in positive activities in their spare time and have a higher satisfaction of life. Secondly, the less the elderly people have for a monthly income, the more they feel a deep sense of isolation. However, if the elderly have a sufficient monthly income, they spend their spare time on positive activities and feel a higher sense of satisfaction in their lives. These results show that economic situation is an important factor for elderly people to maintain good mental health and a good quality of life. Thirdly, the loneliness of elderly people who have no spouse was influenced by whether the elderly people have children or not. If an elderly person loses their spouse through death, they can find themselves in a desperate situation and feeling very isolated. Most elderly people who have no spouse want to live with their offspring and depend on their sons and daughters economically and psychologically. However, the elderly people living alone have lower satisfaction of life because of economic and psychological problems. Therefore, the results shows that the life satisfaction of elderly people who have no spouse was influenced by living with their children and having a close relationship with them. The elderly people who have no spouse feel hopelessness and rely increasingly on their sons and daughters. The elderly people who don't have a sufficient monthly income not only feel more loneliness than other elderly people, but are also restricted in their spare time activities. It proves that the economic situation(monthly income) is also an important factor to maintain personal relationships.

  • Social services are divided into care services and other support services for the elderly, children and the disabled. These social services are the subject of great policy interest in that they can create two effects at the same time: increase in labor demand for service providers and increase the possibility of long-term accumulation of human capital for service recipients. Therefore, this study aims to confirm the hypothesis according to whether the use of social services affects family relationships and the effects of social service users' psychological adaptation on marital and parent-child relationships even when other related variables are controlled. The final result of this thesis is a regression analysis to find out the effect of psychological adaptation on the family relationship, spouse relationship, and relationship with children of subjects who have experience using social services. -.661, p=0.001), the higher the psychological adaptation, the higher the spouse satisfaction (β=.465, p=0.001) and relationship satisfaction with children (β=.360, p=0.001). In other words, it was found that the more depressed the psychologically, the more negative the relationship with spouse and children.

  • This study examined reasons for marital satisfaction among men and women, and explored how sources of marital satisfaction varied with gender. Data were drawn from a sell-administered questionnaire study in which 173 married people residing in Seoul participated. Although the majority of both men and women in this study were at least somewhat satisfied with their marital life, men were, on average, more satisfied with their marriage than were women. Content analysis of reasons for marital satisfaction, obtained through an open-ended question, revealed that both men and women mentioned most frequently as their sources of marital satisfaction in this order: spouse, family, and children. However, while a large proportion of men's reasons for satisfaction concerned spouse, particularly affective relationship with their spouses, women's reasons indicated more diverse sources of marital satisfaction, including spouse, family, children, stability of living and of economy. Analysis of specific reasons for satisfaction in each source revealed that marital satisfaction was intimately connected with one's experience of happiness, love, stability, harmony, and peace, and that respondents experienced such positive emotions, leading to marital satisfaction, not only through relationship with their spouses, but also through other sources, such as children, family members, and respondents themselves. Moreover, good personality and health of spouse, family members, and children were frequently cited as reasons for marital satisfaction, and these reasons were more common among women's responses. Based on these results, both universal and cultural characteristics of marital satisfaction were considered, and gender differences in satisfaction with marital life were discussed. Finally, implications for clinical social work practice from this study were provided.
