  • This study aimed to evaluate the differences in canine preferences for pet food terrine according to the processing method. As companion dogs, three male Spitz canines (average age 12 years, average weight 7 kg) and three male Spitz mix canines (average age 12 years, average weight 5 kg) were used in Experiment 1, whereas five male (average age 10 years, average weight 9 kg) and five female Shetland Sheepdogs (Sheltie, average age 10 years, average weight 8 kg) were used in Experiment 2, to evaluate their preferences and intake types. In both experiments, all dog categories mostly preferred 'meat' when it came to their first choice of food consumed, followed by 'vegetables', 'mixed eating', and 'vegetable leftover' last. This confirms means that canines are carnivores, and over time, choosing 'vegetables' or 'vegetable leftovers' as a secondary or alternate food source can be considered a natural process. When provided various terrines, canines in both experiments first ingested 'cooked' rather than 'freeze-dried' duck, chicken, beef, and pork terrines when selecting food at the start of feeding. For both experiments, most of the intake types using duck, chicken, beef, and pork terrine showed a preference for 'after consuming cooked terrine first and then intake freeze-dried' item. In conclusion, the reason for preferring cooked terrine can be attributed to the difference in the preparation cooking method of freeze-dried cooked terrine.

  • The purpose of this study was to determine whether Rescue Remedy, the most popular Bach flower, was effective in reducing stress and fear in pets, thereby alleviating behavioral problems such as aggression and improving the welfare of canines. The evaluation was conducted with canines without diseases or behavioral problems. Two male Spitz dogs (average age 15 years, average weight 8 kg), one female Spitz dog (age 12 years, weight 8 kg), and nine Shetland sheep dogs (average age, 11 years, average weight 9 kg) were used in the study. Responses in the heart rate were found in three groups of dogs during nail trimming (P < 0.05). Heart rate variability in each of the three canines that were 8 and 13 years old were similar on the Bach flower remedy (P > 0.05). Ethogram observations during nail cutting indicated a reduction in aberrant behavior after administration of Bach Flower remedy. In conclusion, the application of Bach flower Rescue Remedies resulted in substantially lower heart rates and a reduction in stress-related behaviors was observed.

  • In land and marine seismic survey, we generally set receivers with equal interval suppose that sampling interval Is too narrow. But the cost of seismic data acquisition and that of data processing are much higher, therefore we should design proper receiver interval. Spatial aliasing can be occurred on seismic data when sampling interval is too coarse. If we Process spatial aliasing data, we can not obtain a good imaging result. Trace interpolation is used to improve the quality of multichannel seismic data processing. In this study, we applied the Spitz algorithm which is widely used in seismic data processing. This algorithm works well regardless of dip information of the complex underground structure. Using prediction filter and original traces with linear event we interpolated in f-x domain. We confirm our algorithm by examining for some synthetic data and marine data. After interpolation, we could find that receiver intervals get more narrow and the number of receiver is increased. We also could see that continuity of traces is more linear than before Applying this interpolation algorithm on seismic data with spatial aliasing, we may obtain a better migration imaging.

  • The aims of this study were to evaluate the prognostic predictabilities of the risk classifications (Waterston, Montreal, and Spitz), preoperative treatment of pneumonia and the length of esophageal gap in esophageal atresia. Twenty-five cases of esophageal atresia were reviewed retrospectively. The data was analyzed with Likelihood ratio test for trend and Fisher's exact test. Survival rates were 100.0 % in group A and B, and 60.0 % in group C according to Waters ton classification (p=0.027). By Montreal classification, 95.7 % in group I and 50.0 % in group II (p=0.086). By Spitz classification, 95.5 % in group I and 66.7% in group II (p=0.159). The survival rate was 85.7 % in the patients with pneumonia preoperatively treated and 94.4% in the patients without pneumonia. The difference was not significant (p=0.490). Survival rate in the patients with long gap (${\geq}$3cm) was 50.0 % and 100.0 % in patients with short gap (<3cm) with significant difference (p=0.020). The Waterston classification could be modified into two groups because the prognosis of both group A and B were the same. Preoperative pneumonia does not seem to be a risk factor. The length of the esophageal gap showed prognostic value.

  • Alkoxyamine and thiocarbonyl thio end capped polyethylene (PE) chains were synthesized using a direct and simple approach consisting in reacting di(polyethylenyl)magnesium (PE-Mg-PE) chains with a range of nitroxides and disulfides of thiocarbonyl thio compounds. PE-Mg-PE compounds were prepared by a catalyzed chain growth reaction of ethylene on nbutyloctylmagnesium (BOMg) with a neodymocene complex $(C_{5}Me_{5})_{2}NdCl_{2}Li(OEt_{2})_{2}$. Complete characterizations confirm the introduction of the desired end groups. The controlled radical polymerization (NMP and RAFT) of butyl acrylate mediated by these functional polyethylenes was successful.

  • RAFT polymerization can produce under controlled conditions polymer chains incorporating well-defined chain ends. By designing a simple way of producing functional RAFT agents, a variety of ${\Box}-end$ groups was successfully introduced onto hydrophilic polymer chains. The ${\Box}-end$ group being a thiocarbonyl thio function was used as efficient chain transfer agent in dispersion or emulsion polymerization to produce original functional latex particles.

  • A Spitz (5-years old, castrated male) and a Maltese (9-years old, castrated male) were presented with weight loss, polyuria/polydipsia (PU/PD) and depression. Diabetic ketosis was diagnosed based on clinical signs, physical examinations and screening tests (CBC, serum chemistry and urinalysis). The dogs were treated with NPH initially. However, NPH was inadequate to control blood glucose level due to the short duration of the action (< 5 hours). Because of the poor glycemic control with NPH, the dogs showed diabetic complications including weight loss and cataract. After change to glargine, the duration of insulin action was extended up to 11 hours. As a result, there was significant improvement in clinical signs and serum fructosamine concentrations. This study suggests that glargine is useful as a long-acting insulin in dogs which have poor glycemic control due to the short duration of NPH.

  • Background: Dental diseases are common in dogs and cats, and accurate measurements of dentoalveolar structure are important for planning of treatment. The information that the comparison computed tomography (CT) with dental radiography (DTR) is not yet reported in veterinary medicine. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to compare the DTR with CT of dentoalveolar structures in healthy dogs and cats, and to evaluate the CT images of 2 different slice thicknesses (0.5 and 1.0 mm). Methods: We included 6 dogs (2 Maltese and 1 Spitz, Beagle, Pomeranian, mixed, 1 to 8 years, 4 castrated males, and 2 spayed female) and 6 cats (6 domestic short hair, 8 months to 3 years, 4 castrated male, and 2 spayed female) in this study. We measured the pulp cavity to tooth width ratio (P/T ratio) and periodontal space of maxillary and mandibular canine teeth, maxillary fourth premolar, mandibular first molar, maxillary third premolar and mandibular fourth premolar. Results: P/T ratio and periodontal space in the overall dentition of both dogs and cats were smaller in DTR compared to CT. In addition, CT images at 1.0 mm slice thickness was generally measured to be greater than the images at 0.5 mm slice thickness. Conclusions: The results indicate that CT with thin slice thickness provides more accurate information on the dentoalveolar structures. Additional DTR, therefore, may not be required for evaluating dental structure in small-sized dogs and cats.

  • Background: Use of prebiotics in companion animal nutrition is often considered advantageous over probiotics because of the ease of handling, ability to withstand processing and storage etc. While most of the studies on prebiotic use in dogs have been done with processed food as basal diet, the response in relation to homemade diet feeding is not very well explored. Methods: The study was conducted to evaluate the effects of dietary mannanoligosaccharide (MOS) supplementation on nutrient digestibility, hindgut fermentation, immune response and antioxidant indices in dogs. Ten Spitz pups were divided into two groups: control (CON) with no supplementation, and experimental (MOS) wherein the basal diet was supplemented with MOS at 15 g/kg diet. All dogs were fed on a home-prepared diet for a period of 150 days. The study protocol included a digestion trial, periodic blood collection and analysis for lipid profile and erythrocytic antioxidants. Immune response of the animals was assessed towards the end of the feeding period. Results: Results revealed no significant (P > 0.05) variations in palatability score, intake and apparent digestibility of nutrients between the groups. Faecal score, faeces voided, faecal pH, concentrations of ammonia, lactate and short-chain fatty acids were comparable (P > 0.05) between the two groups. Cell-mediated immune response, assessed as delayed-type of hypersensitivity response, was significantly higher (P < 0.05) in the MOS group. The percent of lymphocyte sub-populations CD4+ and ratio of CD4+:CD8+ were also significantly (P < 0.05) higher in MOS group. The serum IgG levels were similar (P > 0.05) in both the groups. Supplementation of MOS lowered (P < 0.05) serum total- and LDL- cholesterol levels, when compared with the control group. The erythrocytic antioxidant indices were similar (P > 0.05) between the two groups. Conclusions: The results indicated that supplementation of MOS at the rate of 15 g/kg in the diet of dog augmented the cell-mediated immune response and serum lipid profile without any influences on digestibility of nutrients, hindgut fermentation and antioxidants indices.
