  • The one-dimensional coordination polymers, $[Cu^{II}(L)(NO_3)_2]_n$ (1) and {$[Cu^{II}(L)(NO_3)]{\cdot}2H_2O}_{2n} (2), were synthesized from $Cu(NO_3)_2{\cdot}3H_2O$ and 2-[(pyridin-3-ylmethyl)amino]ethanol (L, PMAE) in methanol by controlling the molar ratio of copper(II) salt. Copper(II) ion in 1 has one pyridine group of PMAE whose an aminoethanol group coordinates adjacent copper(II) ion. As the pyridine group is bonded to neighboring copper(II) ion, 1 becomes a one-dimensional chain. Contrary to 1, the structure of 2 shows that the oxygen atom of ethoxide group is bridged between two copper(II) ions, which forms a dinuclear complex. Additionally, the pyridine group of PMAE included one dinuclear unit is coordinated to the other dimeric one each other, which leads to a one-dimensional polymer. Due to the structural differences, 1 exhibits weak antiferromagnetic interaction, while 2 shows strong antiferromagnetic interaction. Due to direct spin exchange via oxygen of PMAE 2 has a much strong spin coupling than 1.

  • The Cu thickness dependence of magnetic sensitivity for the NiFe/Cu/NiFe/IrMn spin valve multilayer was investigated. The magnetic properties measured by minor MR curves for the Ta(5 nm)/NiFe(8 nm)/Cu(3.5 nm)/NiFe(4 nm)/IrMn(8 nm)/Ta(2.5 nm) multilayer is MR = 1.46 %, MS = 2.0 %/Oe, $H_c\;=\;2.6\;Oe$, and $H_{int}\;=\;0.1\;Oe$. The magnetic sensitivities of GMR-SV devices with ten different widths and a same length of $4.45\;{\mu}m$ by fabricated by photo lithography decreased from 0.3 %/Oe to 0.06%/Oe as from a width of $10\;{\mu}m$ to $1\;{\mu}m$.

  • We fabricated the synthetic ferrimagnetic layers (SyFL) of permalloy/X (X=Ru, V)/permalloy by varying the X thickness, and investigated the changes of coercivity (H$\sub$c/), spin flopping field (H$\sub$sf/), and saturation magnetization field (H$\sub$s/) with a superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID). We also observed the microstructure with a cross sectional transmission electron microscope (TEM). Permalloy SyFL had less than 10 Oe coercivity, and H$\sub$sf/ and H$\sub$s/ could be tuned by varying ruthenium and vanadium layer thickness. The comparatively small exchange coupling in permalloy-V SyFL was caused by the intermixing of permalloy and vanadium decreasing the effective exchange coupling thickness.

  • The magnetic properties, thermal stability and anti-corrosion properties of $Cr_86Al_14$ spin valves multilayers were studied. It was found that the magnetic properties of $Cr_86Al_14$ spin valves depend on the thickness of antiferromagnetic, ferromagnetic and non-ferromagnetic layers. Exchange coupled field ($H_{ex}$) and magnetoresistance ratio (%) showed the largest value of 20 Oe, 2 % in $glass/Cr_{86}Al_{14}(600 $\AA$)/Ni_{81}Fe_{19}(50$\AA$)/Cu(40 $\AA$)/Ni_{81}Fe_{19}(40 $\AA$)$ spin valves. The $H_{ex}$ MR ratios (%) of CrAl and FeMn spin valves were decreased with increasing annealing temperatures and were lost at 150 $^{\circ}C$, 250 $^{\circ}C$ respectively. Based on these result, it was elucidated that CrAl is more thermally stable than FeMn. It was also shown that there was no change of $H_{ex}$ MR ratios in CrAl, while FeMn was changed and lost 15 days later in corrosion resistance test under 35 $^{\circ}C$, 90 % humidity condition. FeMn was found to be pitted and peeled off 15 days later by SEM micrographic analysis.

  • The holes with a diameter of $35{\mu}m$ inside the GMR-SV (giant magnetoresistance-spin valve) film were patterned by using the photolithography process and ECR (electron cyclotron resonance) Ar-ion milling. From the magnetoresistance curves of the GMR-SV film with holes measuring by 4-electrode method, the MR (magnetoresistance ratio) and MS (magnetic sensitivity) are almost same as the values of initial states. On other side hand, the $H_{ex}$ (exchange bias coupling field) and $H_c$ (coercivity) dominantly increased from 120 Oe and 10 Oe to 190 Oe and 41 Oe as increment of the number of holes inside GMR-SV film respectively. These results were shown to be attributed to major effect of EMD (easy magnetic domian) having a region positioned between two holes perpendicular to the sensing current. On the basis of this study, the fabrication of GMR-SV applying to the hole formation improved the magnetoresistance properties having the thermal stability and durability of bio-device.

  • We investigated the origin of magnetic behaviors induced by an asymmetric spin exchange interaction in Fe-site engineered lead iron niobate [Pb(Fe1/2Nb1/2)O3, PFN], which exhibits a room-temperature multiferroicity. The magnitude of spin exchange interaction was regulated by the introduced transition metals with a distinct Bohr magneton, i.e., Cr, Co, and Ni. All compositions were found to have a single-phase perovskite structure keeping their ferroelectric order except for Cr introduction. We discovered that the incorporation of each transition metal imposes a distinct magnetic behavior on the lead iron niobate system; antiferro-, hard ferro-, and soft ferromagnetism for Cr, Co, and Ni, respectively. This indicates that orbital occupancy and interatomic distance play key roles in the determination of magnetic behavior rather than the magnitude of the individual Bohr magneton. Further investigations are planned, such as X-ray absorption spectroscopy, to clarify the origin of magnetic properties in this system.

  • Ni-Fe thin films are deposited on the corning glass substrate by means of RF magnetron sputtering system In order to investigate the dependence of the prorerties of Ni-Fe thin films on the film thickness, ferromagnetic reson¬ance spectrum has been examined. The effective magnetization $M_{eff}$ is constant for all samples, while the exchange stiffness constant A increases with the film thickness. A tendency that spectroscopic splitting factor g increases with the sample thickness, we expect that the increase of the contribution of the orbital motion to the magnetic moment as a reason for it.

  • We have studied electronic and magnetic structure of cubane-type Cu magnetic molecule using density functional method. The calculated density of states show that Cu has 3d $x^2-y^2$ hole orbital because of short distances between Cu atom and in-plane 4 ligand atoms. The calculated total energy with in-plane antiferromagnetic spin configuration is lower than those of ferromagnetic configurations. The calculated exchange interaction J between in-plane Cu atoms is much larger than those between out-plane Cu atoms, since the $x^2-y^2$ hole orbital ordering of Cu 3d orbitals induces strong super-exchange interaction between in-plane Cu atoms.

  • We have studied electronic and magnetic structure of 2 kinds of diiron molecules using OpenMX method based on density functional method. The calculated density of states of diiron-2 is similar with that of diiron-4 because of equal number of 6 ligand atoms. The calculated total energy with antiferromagnetic spin configuration is lower than those of ferromagnetic configurations for both of them. The exchange interaction J of diiiron-4 between $Fe^{+3}$ atoms is one order larger than that of diiron-2, and the calculated J matches well with the experimental one. That comes from the short distance of Fe-O and the high O 2p energy levels. It derives a strong super exchange interaction. The angle of diiron-4 between Fe atoms is bigger than that of diiron-2. It also derives a strong super exchange interaction because of the ${\sigma}$-bond between Fe and O atoms.

  • The exchange bias field ($H_{EX}$) and the coercivity ($H_C$) variation and change depending on the thickness of intermediately super-soft magnetic NiFeCuMo layer with different thickness of the bottom NiFe layer were investigated. The $H_{EX}$ of triple pinned NiFe(4 nm)/NiFeCuMo($t_{NiFeCuMo}$= 1 nm)/NiFe(4 nm)/FeMn multilayer has the maximum value more less than one of single pinned NiFe(8 nm)/FeMn layer. If NiFeCuMo layer is inserted each into between the pinned and free NiFe layers, we can be used as GMR-SV device for a bio-sensor that has improved magnetic sensitivity.
