In the course of our screening for neuroprotective agents, a new compound (1) was isolated together with a known compound, caruilignan C (2), from the fruiting body of Daldinia concentrica. Their structures were determined on the basis of various spectral studies. Both compounds exhibited neuroprotective effect against iron-induced neurodegeneration in a primary culture of mouse cortical neurons.

Two Lignans Phyllanthin and Hypophyllanthin, and a steroid ${\beta}-sitosterol$ has been isolated from the leaves of Phyllanthus debilis and their structures were established by spectral analysis and direct comparison with authentic samples. This is the first report of occurrence of these compound from P.debilis.

From the fresh unripe fruits of Paeonia moutan Sim. (Paeoniaceae), paeoniflorin and its acyl congeners, benzoylpaeoniflorin and benzoyloxypaeoniflorin, along with ${\beta}-sitosterol$ and methyl gallate were isolated. All compounds were identified on the basis of spectral data and chemical reactions. However, paeonol was not detected from this plant parts. These results suggested that the chemical components of the unripe fruits were virtually similar to those of root barks.

Using an information of dimensions of divergence points, we give full information of dimensions of the completely decomposed class of the lower(upper) distribution sets of a self-similar Cantor set. Further using a relationship between the distribution sets and the subsets generated by the lower(upper) local dimensions of a self-similar measure, we give full information of dimensions of the subsets by the local dimensions.

Spectroscopic observations of the long period eclipsing binary AZ Cas were made using 122cm telescope/Image Tube. From the relatively sharp and strong spectral FeI lines we can calculate the mean radial velocity as -39.7km/sec. The estimated equivalent widths of some atomic lines are well fitted to the phase of the AZ Cas.

Eight derivatives of arylpropionic acid, arylcarbonylpropicnic acid, and arylhydroxybutyric acid were synthesized and their structures were elucidated on the basis of elemental analysis and spectral data. Also their antiinflammatory activities were evaluated by the method of the inhibitory effect on the carrageenin-induced rat paw edema and compared with phenylbutazone. Compound (I) exhibited 59% edema inhibition vs control when 100 mg/kg, was orally administered, whereas phenylbutazone showed 57.8% for 50mg/kg.

Change of tensile properties, electrical conductivity and microwave shielding of electrochemically synthesized polypyrrole films with time are presented. Highly doped films had good electrical stability, retaining high microwave reflectivity throughout the aging period. Lightly doped films were less stable and partially reflective and absorptive of microwaves. FT-IR spectral observations revealed a progressive increase in intensity of an unsaturated conjugated carbonyl peak, which was not observed in the highly doped films, suggesting that the concentration of the dopant had an influence on mechanism of degradation of conductivity.
