Many multiplexing techniques are proposed for high storage densities in a volume hologram. In this paper, we present a hybrid angularly and spatially multiplexed volume holographic memory system. Multiple holograms are recorded by using reference and object waves with different incident angles and positions that are changed by step motors. A hologram is written by exposing the crystal with recording time schedule to the interference pattern of the object beam and a reference plane wave. Finally, we show experimental results of the storage of three layers of 300 multiplexed holograms in a LiNbO$_3$ : Fe crystal.
A surface acoustic wave signal processing device using the silicon surface state is presented and shown capable of storing a reference signal and later correlating another signal with the stored reference. The device memory consists of the storage of the spatial 2k pattern of an acoustic wave as stored charges in the surface state of silicon surface. Results of experiments are presented which characterize the operation of device. Simpliied models for charging process and nonlinear acoustoelectric interactions based on consideration of single surface state at the surface of silicon The validity of simplified model has been qualitatibely confirmed with experimental results and the application of this device to aprogrammable matched filter of communication is considered.
This paper concerns collocation methods for integro-differential equations in which memory kernels have a singularity at t = 0. There has been extensive research in recent years on Volterra integral and integro-differential equations for physical systems with memory effects in which the stabilty and asymtotic stability of solutionsl have been the main interest. We will study a class of hereditary equations with singular kernels which interpolate between well known model equations as the order of singularity varies. We are also concerned with the smoothing effect of singular kernels, but we use energy methods and our results involve fractional time in fixed spatial norms. Galerkin methods for our models was studied and existence, uniqueness and stability results was obtained in [4]. Our major goal is to study collocation methods.

This paper proposes a battery remaining useful life (RUL) prediction method using a deep learning-based EMD-CNN-LSTM hybrid method. The proposed method pre-processes capacity data by applying empirical mode decomposition (EMD) and predicts the remaining useful life using CNN-LSTM. CNN-LSTM is a hybrid method that combines convolution neural network (CNN), which analyzes spatial features, and long short term memory (LSTM), which is a deep learning technique that processes time series data analysis. The performance of the proposed remaining useful life prediction method is verified using the battery aging experiment data provided by the NASA Ames Prognostics Center of Excellence and shows higher accuracy than does the conventional method.
The purpose of this study was to investigate why advance organizers (AO) are effective in promoting comprehension and mental model formation in terms of cognitive load. Two experimental groups: a concept-map AO group and a key-word AO group and one control group were used. This study considered cognitive load in view of Baddeley's working memory model: central executive (CE), phonological loop (PL), and visuo-spatial sketch pad (VSSP). The present experiment directly examined cognitive load using dual task methodology. The results were as follows: central executive (CE) suppression task achievement for the concept map AO group was higher than the key word AO group and control group. Comprehension and mental model construction for the concept map AO group were higher than the other groups. These results indicated that the superiority of concept map AO owing to CE load decrement occurred with comprehension and mental model construction in learning. Thus, the available resources produced by CE load reduction may have been invested for comprehension and mental model construction of learning contents.
This study aimed to assess the spatial cognition strategies and roles taken by students in the process of solving spatial tasks. For the analysis, this study developed two spatial tests based on the mental rotation test, which were taken by 63 students in their final year in elementary schools. The results of this study showed that in terms of the method of approaching the tasks, students took the comprehensive approach and the partial approach. When solving the tasks, the students were shown to use the imagery thinking or analytic thinking method. In terms of perspective, the students rotated the object or change their perspectives. A comparison of the methods used by the students revealed that when approaching the tasks, the group of students who chose the partial approach had higher scores. In terms of solving the tasks the analytic thinking method, and in terms of perspective, changing perspectives were shown to be more effective. Such effective methods were used more frequently in discrimination tasks than in recognition tasks, and in more complicated items, than in less complicated items. In conclusion, the results of this study suggested that the partial, analytic approach and the change of perspectives are useful strategies in solving tasks which require high cognitive effort.
Since human visual system has limited capacity for visual information processing, it should select goal-relevant information for further processing. There have been several studies that emphasized the possible involvement of memory in spatial shift of selective attention (Chun & Jiang, 1998, 1999; Klein, 1988; Klein & MacInnes, 1999). However, other studies suggested the inferiority of human visual memory in change detection(Rensink, O'Regan, & Clark, 1997; Simons & Levin, 1997) and in visual search(Hotowitz & Wolfe, 1998). The present study examined the involvement of memory in visual search; whether memory for the previously searched items guides selective attentional shift or not. We investigated how search works by comparing visual search performances in three different conditions; full exposure condition, partial exposure condition, and partial-to-full exposure condition. Revisiting searched items was allowed only in full exposure condition and not in either partial or partial-to-full exposure condition. The results showed that the efficiencies of attentional shift were nearly identical for all conditions. This finding implies that even in full exposure condition the participants scarcely re-examined the previously searched items. The results suggest that instant memory can be formed and used in visual search process. These results disagree with the earlier studies claiming thar visual search has no memory. We discussed the problems of the previous research paradigms and suggested some alternative accounts.

This study intended to investigate the effects of the subtitle location on the decreased working memory abilities caused by aging. A junior group (average age: 26, SD: 3.06, N=27) and a senior group (average age: 61.69, SD=4.18, N=26) participated in this study and they all performed N-back tasks which measured the working memory ability of the participants and video subtitle recognition tasks that assessed the most effectively recognized subtitle locations in the video. The results of the N-back task revealed slower response times and low accuracy rates in the senior group in comparison to the junior group, suggesting lower working memory abilities in the senior group vis-à-vis the junior group. The deterioration of working memory due to aging also negatively influenced the 'left-bottom' subtitle location in the video subtitle recognition task and positively influenced the 'left-center' location of the screen. The deterioration of working memory ability did not affect other subtitle locations. By examining the positive or negative effects of the deterioration of working memory ability as a function of age on subtitle locations, the present study suggests that the selection of suitable subtitle locations taking into account the ages of video viewers would cause information to be more effectively displayed on screen.

Instead of using only spatial features from a single frame for person re-identification, a combination of spatial and temporal factors boosts the performance of the system. A recurrent neural network (RNN) shows its effectiveness in generating highly discriminative sequence-level human representations. In this work, we implement RNN, three Long Short Term Memory (LSTM) network variants, and Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU) on Caffe deep learning framework, and we then conduct experiments to compare performance in terms of size and accuracy for person re-identification. We propose using GRU for the optimized choice as the experimental results show that the GRU achieves the highest accuracy despite having fewer parameters than the others.
This paper proposes an efficient image description method for image retrieval using circular scanning pattern. Therefore, we place the origin of the circular scanning pattern on center point of an image and describe spatial color features of the image using the pattern. The features are Circular Dominant Color, Circular Color Texture, and Circular Color Variation Plot. By the method we can describe color and spatial information of the image at a time, efficiently. Therefore, we can reduce the computational expense and memory usage needed to index the image more than the conventional one does.
