  • The performance of slopes during earthquake is often accessed in terms of permanent deformation. In the assessment of permanent deformation, Newmark-type rigid block analysis is widely used. Original Newmark-type block approach, however, assumes the potential sliding mass to be rigid, and has been criticized to be potentially unconservative. The paper reviews analytically the impact of this noncompliance assumption on computed permanent deformations. The results indicate that there is a simple criterion that can be used to determine the level of conservativeness of the rigid block approach in cases of gently-sloping slip surfaces and retaining walls.

  • Filament inversion routines are highly effective for target definition whenever total-field DHTEM vectors can be obtained using three-component logging tools. However most cross-hole components contain significant noise related to sensor design and errors in observation of probe rotation. Standard stacking methods can be used to improve data quality but additional statistical methods based on cross-correlation and spatial averaging of orthogonal components may be required to ensure a consistent vector migration path. Apart from assisting with spatial averaging, multiple filaments generated for successive time-windows can provide additional imaging information relating to target geometry and current migration. New digital receiver systems provide additional time-windows to provide better tracking options necessary for high-resolution imaging of this type.

  • In this paper, we propose new beamforming algorithm which overcomes signal cancellation effect even high cross correlation existing between target and interfering signal. Using the proposed method, we show that direction of arrival (DOA) of interfering signal can be estimated using correlation matrix and the cross-correlation can be eliminated in the correlation matrix of input signal. The proposed method gives high performance enhancement compared with the spatial averaging method in our computer simulation results.

  • This paper deals with the effect of spatial distribution of material properties on its statistical characteristics and numerical estimation method of reliability of fatigue sensitive structures with respect to the fatigue crack growth. A method is proposed to determine experimentally the probability distribution functions of material parameters of Paris law. da/dN=C(ΔK/K sub(0) ) super(m), using stress intensity factor controlled fatigue tests. The result with a high tensile strength steel shows that the distribution of the parameter m is approximately normal and that of 1/C, is a 3-parameter Weibull. The main result obtained are : (1) The theoretical autocorrelation of the resistance, 1/C, to fatigue crack growth are almost same for different lengths. (2) The variance decreases with the increasing a averaging length. When spatial correlation length is very small. the variane decreases significantly were the averaging length. (3) The probability distribution of load cycles or the number for a crack to reach a certain length can be estimated using these functions by simulation of non-Gaussian(expecially Weibull) Stochastic Process.

  • Near-wake flow field downstream of a circular cylinder in the wake-transition regime where fine-scale secondary vortices have a spanwise wavelength of around one diameter has been studied by means of phase-averaging from cinematic PIV data. A cross-correlation algorithm in conjunction with the FFT(Fast Fourier Transform)analysis and an offset correlation technique is used for obtaining the velocity vectors. Which the help of very high sampling rate compared to the shedding frequency, it is possible to obtain phase-averaged flow fields although the shedding is not forced but natural. Phase -locked three-dimensional vortical structures are reconstructed form the phase-averaged data in one x-y(cross-sectional) and several z-x(spanwise-streamwise)planes. In this process of phase-averaging in a z-x plane, a technique to freeze the secondary vortices relative to the centerline is applied. The formation process of the secondary vortices is shown by considering spatial relations between the primary Karman and the secondary vortices and their temporal evolutions.

  • This study was conducted to develop a method to be able to estimate the vehicular emissions according to spatial scales-Seoul province, 25 counties and hundreds of grids $(1km{\times}1km)$. First, the emissions at each spatial scale was calculated by using the road network and the travel volume and speed of each link modeled by travel demand model (TDM). Second, the emission at each spatial scale was calculated on the basis of average speeds estimated by using three kinds of averaging method. These are called the provincial, volume-delay function (VDF) and zonal method, respectively. Third, three kinds of emissions and those by TDM are compared each other at three spatial scales. In Seoul (provincial scale), three kinds of emissions are less than those by TDM, but the differences of TDM from three speed averaging methods (SAMs) are small. The relative ratios of three SAMs to TDM are $88\~90\%\;in\;CO,\;99\~100\%\;in\;NOx,\;84\~85\%$ in VOCs. At county scale, NOx among three pollutants showed the highest correlation between TDM and three SAMs and the zonal method among three SAMs was proven to be the highest correlation with TDM. NOx showed the coefficients $(R^2)$ greater than 0.9 in all three SAMs but CO and VOC showed the coefficients $(R^2)$ greater than 0.9 in only zonal method. Slopes of co..elations of all pollutants showed the values close to '1' in zonal method. In the other two SAMs, slopes of NOx showed the values close to '1', but those of CO and VOC showed the values less than 0.85. At grid scale, correlations between TDM and three SAMs were not high. CO showed $0.68\~0.77\;in\;R^2s\;and\;58\~0.68$ in slopes. NOx showed $0.90\~0.94\;in\;R^2s\;and\;0.86\~0.94$ in slopes. VOC showed $0.56\~0.70\;in\;R^2s\;and\;0.48\~0.57$ in slopes. There are not high correlations between TDM and three SAMs in grid scale. This study showed that there is the most suitable method for calculating the average travel speed at each spatial scale and it is thought that the zonal method is more suitable than the VDF or provincial method.

  • Motion errors of linear motion guideway are analyzed theoretically in this paper. For the analysis, an new algorithm predicting motion errors of bearing and guideway is proposed using the Hertz's elastic deformation theory. Accuracy averaging effect can be calculated quantitatively by analyzing relationship between motion errors of guideway and spatial frequency of rail form error. Influences of design parameters on the motion errors including the number of balls, preload, ball diameter, bearing length and the number of bearings are analyzed. As it is difficult to measure the rail form error, experimental results are compared with results analyzed by the equivalent analysis method which evaluate the motion errors of guideway using the measured errors of bearing. From the experimental results, it is confirmed that the proposed analysis method it effective lo analyze the motion errors of linear motion bearing and guideway.

  • The main purpose of this study was to develop a new method for evaluation of stream naturalness in order to appraise and prescribe for streams effectively in the process of ecological restoration of stream corridors. The results are as follows : 1) For this purpose six factors were selected on considering the spatial axes of stream corridor variation and total 20 descriptors about the physical structure were selected. 2) The calculation of S.N.I. for each segment was consisted of three steps, such as calculation of S.N.I.s of the individual descriptors, averaging all the descriptors's for each factor, and finally averaging the factors's for the Total S.N.I. 3) The evaluation unit was decided to be 100m size. The score system ranging 1~5 was adopted. Weighting parameters of factors were unified with each other. 4) A GIS model was adopted for classification, calculation, querying, analysing, and presenting S.N.I. information. And the format of S.N.I. maps including statistical graphs and other spatial watershed information was designed for the GIS odel. The naturalness of stream corridor was was investigated by the naturalness of habitat, and assessed by the descriptors focused on physical structure, therefore the S.N.I. can manifest prescriptions for restoration of the stream corridor. On the other hand because some evaluation factors such as water quality, water volume, fauna, flora, functions of stream exosystem has been excluded, S.N.I. could have some limits on representing the full aspects of stream naturalness. This evaluation method is hypothetical one, so it would be investigated through iterative applicatons.

  • We performed numerical analysis of base drag phenomenon, when a projectile with backward step flies into atmosphere at supersonic speed. We compared with other researchers. From our previous studies that were 2-dimensional simulation, we found out from sophisticated simulations that need dense mesh points to compare base pressure and velocity profile after from base with experimental data. Therefore, we focus on high order spatial disceretization over 3rd order with TVD such as MUSCL TVD 3rd, 5th, and WENO 5th order, and Limiters such as minmod, Triad. Moreover, we enforce to flux averaging schemes such as Roe, RoeM, HLLE, AUSMDV. In present, one dimensional result of Euler tests, there are Sod, Lax, Shu-Osher and interacting blast wave problems. AUSMDV as a flux averaging scheme with MUSCL TVD 5th order as spatial resolution is good agreement with exact solutions than other combinations. We are carrying out the same approaches into 3-dimensional base flow only candidate flux schemes that are Roe, AUSMDV. Additionally, turbulence models are used in 3-dimensional flow, one is Menter s SST DES model and another is Sparlat-Allmaras DES/DDES model in Navier-Stokes equations.
