  • In this paper, we propose a technique for retrieving images using spatial color correlation and texture characteristics based on local fourier transform. In order to retrieve images, two new descriptors are proposed. One is a color descriptor which represents spatial color correlation. The other is a descriptor combining the proposed color descriptor with texture descriptor. Since most of existing color descriptors including color correlogram which represent spatial color correlation considered just color distribution between neighborhood pixels, the structural information of neighborhood pixels is not considered. Therefore, a novel color descriptor which simultaneously represents spatial color distribution and structural information is proposed. The proposed color descriptor represents color distribution of Min-Max color pairs calculating color distance between center pixel and neighborhood pixels in a block with 3x3 size. Also, the structural information which indicates directional difference between minimum color and maximum color is simultaneously considered. Then new color descriptor(min-max color correlation descriptor, MMCCD) containing mean and variance values of each directional difference is generated. While the proposed color descriptor includes by far smaller feature vector over color correlogram, the proposed color descriptor improves 2.5 % ${\sim}$ 13.21% precision rate, compared with color correlogram. In addition, we propose a another descriptor which combines the proposed color descriptor and texture characteristics based on local fourier transform. The combined method reduces size of feature vector as well as shows improved results over existing methods.

  • A new smart antenna receiver which incorporates the spatial fourier Transform and the maximal ratio combining(MRC) is proposed. By adapting the spatial fourier transform, the proposed method could separate the received signal into several spatial frequency components which correspond to the arrival angles of signal components, which means the beam focusing. By using the MRC, the proposed method could achieve the maximum signal to noise ratio for the signal of interest. The proposed algorithm is integrated to the CDMA reverse link receiver and simulations are performed to confirm the performance. As a result, the beam focusing effect is confirmed and the performance gain with the proposed algorithm is comparable to ordinary smart antenna receivers. The simulations are performed over the additive white gaussian noise (AWGN) environments and the results are obtained for the beam focusing capability according to the angle of arrival of a signal and the bit error performance improvement according to the number of combining branches in the MRC.

  • This paper deals with torque harmonic characteristics and its reduction design of induction motors for electric vehicle (EV) propulsion. For calculating the stator harmonic flux of squirrel-cage induction motor, the numerical methods have been employed on the structural configuration design of stator and rotor teeth. In particular, torque ripples including spatial harmonics are obtained by Finite Element Method (FEM), and their individual harmonic components are identified with Fast Fourier Transform (FFT). In this paper, design modification on the teeth surface gives rise to the significant reduction of torque ripples including spatial torque harmonics, which have been obtained with FEM.

  • A spatial-domain Fourier Transform (FT) infrared (IR) spectrometer coupled with a PtSi Schottkybarrier IR detector plane was developed in the spectral range of $2.0-2.5{\mu}m$ for noninvasive measurement of analyte concentrations in cell culture media during cell culture processing. A key optical component of the spectrometer is a Savart plate which is a birefringent polarizer generating coherent two rays for interfering. The spectral resolution of the spectrometer was determined as $71cm^{-1}$ (${\~}0.05{\mu}m$ at $2.5{\mu}m$). Clear IR fringe patterns were imaged on the IR detector plane. The feasibility of the spectrometer for our application was investigated by measuring absorbance spectra of glucose and fetal bovine serum (FBS) which are important compounds in cell culture media. Experiment results show that the spectral quality of glucose and FBS was comparable with the standard spectra acquired with a commercial FT-IR spectrometer, presenting the feasibility of the spectrometer to perform analyte measurement in cell culture media.

  • We demonstrate experimentally that the method of Two-pupil optical scanning technique with PAL-spatial light modulator is capable of performing real-time joint transform correlation(JTC) optical system. Optical addressing is achieved by the use of a photosensitive layer of $\alpha$ - Si which controls the electric field across the liquid crystal The demonstrated technique is based on two-pupil optical heterodyne scanning. The method is independent of a spatial light modulator (SLM) in the Fourier plane. We develop the theory of the technique and evaluate a performance of the method by experimentally estimating the correlation between the target image and the reference image.

  • This paper compares numerical quadrature techniques for computing an inverse Fourier transform integral in two-dimensional resistivity modeling. The quadrature techniques using exponential and cubic spline interpolations are examined for the case of a homogeneous earth model. In both methods the integral over the interval from 0 to ${\lambda}_{min}$, where ${\lambda}_{min}$, is the minimum sampling spatial wavenumber, is calculated by approximating Fourier transformed potentials to a logarithmic function. This scheme greatly reduces the inverse Fourier transform error associated with the logarithmic discontinuity at ${\lambda}=0$. Numrical results show that, if the sampling intervals are adequate, the cubic spline interpolation method is more accurate than the exponential interpolation method.

  • Practical non-synoptic fluctuating wind often exhibits nonstationary features and should be modeled as nonstationary random processes. Generally, the coherence function of the fluctuating wind field has time-varying characteristics. Some studies have shown that there is a big difference between the fluctuating wind field of the coherent function model with and without time variability. Therefore, it is of significance to simulate nonstationary fluctuating wind field with time-varying coherent function. However, current studies on the numerical simulation of nonstationary fluctuating wind field with time-varying coherence are very limited, and the proposed approaches are usually based on the traditional spectral representation method with low simulation efficiency. Especially, for the simulation of multi-variable wind field of large span structures such as transmission tower-line, not only the simulation is inefficient but also the matrix decomposition may have singularity problem. In this paper, it is proposed to conduct the numerical simulation of nonstationary fluctuating wind field in one-spatial dimension with time-varying coherence based on the wavenumber-frequency spectrum. The simulated multivariable nonstationary wind field with time-varying coherence is transformed into one-dimensional nonstationary random waves in the simulated spatial domain, and the simulation by wavenumber frequency spectrum is derived. So, the proposed simulation method can avoid the complicated Cholesky decomposition. Then, the proper orthogonal decomposition is employed to decompose the time-space dependent evolutionary power spectral density and the Fourier transform of time-varying coherent function, simultaneously, so that the two-dimensional Fast Fourier transform can be applied to further improve the simulation efficiency. Finally, the proposed method is applied to simulate the longitudinal nonstationary fluctuating wind velocity field along the transmission line to illustrate its performances.

  • The vibration of a cylindrical shell is generated due to elastic waves propagating on the shell. Those elastic waves include propagating waves such as flexural, longitudinal and shear waves. Those also include non-propagating decaying waves, i.e. evanescent waves. In order to separate contributions of each type of waves to the data for the vibration of the cylindrical shell, spatial signal processing techniques for wavenumber analysis are investigated in this paper. Those techniques include Fast Fourier transform(FFT) algorithm, Extended Prony method and Overdetermined Modified Extended Prony method(OMEP). Those techniques have been applied to identify the waves from simulated vibration signals with various signal-to-noise ratios. Futhermore, the experimental data for in-plane vibration of the cylindrical shell has been processed with those techniques to identify propagating waves(longitudinal, shear and flexural waves) and evanescent waves.

  • In this paper, we propose an improved practical encryption and fault-tolerance decryption method using a non-negative value key and random function obtained with a white noise by using iterative phase wrapping method. A phase wrapping operating key, which is generated by the product of arbitrary random phase images and an original phase image. is zero-padded and Fourier transformed. Fourier operating key is then obtained by taking the real-valued data from this Fourier transformed image. Also the random phase wrapping operating key is made from these arbitrary random phase images and the same iterative phase wrapping method. We obtain a Fourier random operating key through the same method in the encryption process. For practical transmission of encryption and decryption keys via Internet, these keys should be intensity maps with non-negative values. The encryption key and the decryption key to meet this requirement are generated by the addition of the absolute of its minimum value to each of Fourier keys, respectively. The decryption based on 2-f setup with spatial filter is simply performed by the inverse Fourier transform of the multiplication between the encryption key and the decryption key and also can be used as a current spatial light modulator technology by phase encoding of the non-negative values. Computer simulations show the validity of the encryption method and the robust decryption system in the proposed technique.

  • Joint transform correlator (JTC) has been the most suitable technique for real time pattern recognition. This paper proposes a new phase adjustment which adopts two steps of random phase adjustment in the spatial domain and additional phase adjustment in the Fourier domain. Simulated results are presented to show the optimum condition of the phase adjustment and the effect on the correlation peaks, the peak signal-to-noise ratio and the level of discrimination.
