  • Recently, techniques involving head-mounted displays (HMDs) have attracted much attention from academia and industry owing to the increased demand for virtual reality and augmented reality applications. Because HMDs are positioned near to users' eyes, it is important to solve the accommodation-vergence conflict problem to prevent dizziness. Therefore, holography is considered ideal for implementing HMDs. However, within the Nyquist region, the accommodation effect is limited by the space-bandwidth-product of the signal, which is determined by the sampling number of spatial light modulators. In addition, information about the angular spectrum is duplicated over the Fourier domain, and it is necessary to filter out the redundancy. The size of the exit-pupil of the HMD is limited by the Nyquist sampling theory. We newly propose a holographic HMD with an expanded exit-pupil over the Nyquist region by using the time-multiplexing method, and the accommodation effect is enhanced. We realize time-multiplexing by synchronizing a high-speed digital micromirror device and a liquid-crystal shutter array. We also demonstrate the accommodation effect experimentally.

  • Electrical impedance tomography is a relatively new nondestructive imaging modality in which the internal conductivity distribution is reconstructed based on the injected currents and measured voltages through electrodes placed on the surface of a domain. In this paper, a fast iterative Gauss-Newton method is proposed to increase the spatial resolution as well as reduce the inverse computational time in the inverse problem, which could be applied to online binary mixture flow applications. To evaluate the reconstruction performance of the proposed method, numerical experiments have been carried out and the results are analyzed.

  • Image denoising as one of image enhancement methods has been studied a lot in the spatial and transform domain filtering. Recently wavelet transform which has an excellent energy compaction and a property of multiresolution has widely used for image denoising. But a transform based on human visual system is visually useful if an end user is human beings. Therefore, Gabor cosine and sine transform which is considered as human visual filter is applied to image denoising areas in this paper. Denoising performance of the proposed transform is compared with those of the derivatives of Gaussian transform being another human visual filter and of discrete wavelet transform in terms of PSNR. With three levels of various noises, experimental results for real images show that the proposed transform has better PSNR performance of 0.41dB than DWT and 0.14dB than DGT.

  • In this paper we propose a Wavelet- based compression algorithm of HDTV video signals for the purpose of recording HDTV signals in the digital VTR. Comparing to the DCT- based compression method, which only yields unrecognizable DCT coefficients, the low frequency components of Wavelet coefficients maintain recognizable spatial domain information. So, it is more suitable for various VTR operations such as editing and multi-speed mode operations. Also, the adopted Wavelet filter can be Implemented with simple shift operations, which can reduce the computational complexities substantially. The quality of reconstructed HDTV signals with a 4:1 compression ratio turns out to be good enough for the studio use.

  • Multi-dimensional hydrodynamic and water quality models are widely used to simulate the physical and biogeochemical processes in the surface water systems such as reservoirs and estuaries. Most of the models have adopted the Eulerian grid modeling framework, mainly because it can reasonably simulate physical dynamics and chemical species concentrations throughout the entire model domain. Determining the optimum grid cell size is important when using the Eulerian grid-based three-dimensional water quality models because the characteristics of species are assumed uniform in each of the grid cells and chemical species are represented by concentration (mass per volume). The objective of this study was to examine the effect of grid-size of a three dimensional hydrodynamic and water quality model (EFDC) on hydrodynamics and mass transport in the Saemangeum Reservoir. Three grid resolutions, respectively representing coarse (CG), medium (MG), and fine (FG) grid cell sizes, were used for a sensitivity analysis. The simulation results of numerical tracer showed that the grid resolution affects on the flow path, mass transport, and mixing zone of upstream inflow, and results in a bias of temporal and spatial distribution of the tracer. With the CG, in particular, the model overestimates diffusion in the mixing zone, and fails to identify the gradient of concentrations between the inflow and the ambient water.

  • A technique for an efficient video coding based on characteristics of human visual response in relation to motion is described in this paper. An input frame is segmented into low frequency bands and high frequency bands by wavelet transformation. The non-sensitivity parts of the segmented bands are removed according to spatial and directional frequency sensitivity, which is related to motion property in a frame. Experimental results of the proposed method show good performance in PSNR with keeping on without degradation of subjective quality with 21-30:1 coding rate.

  • In video surveillance system, the exposure of a person's face is a serious threat to personal privacy. To protect the personal privacy in large amount of videos, an automatic face detection method is required to locate and mask the person's face. However, in real-world surveillance videos, the effectiveness of existing face detection methods could deteriorate due to large variations in facial appearance (e.g., facial pose, illumination etc.) or degraded face (e.g., occluded face, low-resolution face etc.). This paper proposes a new face detection method based on multi-level facial features. In a video frame, different kinds of spatial features are independently extracted, and analyzed, which could complement each other in the aforementioned challenges. Temporal domain analysis is also exploited to consolidate the proposed method. Experimental results show that, compared to competing methods, the proposed method is able to achieve very high recall rates while maintaining acceptable precision rates.

  • Uncoupled, quasi-static and linear thermoviscoelastic problems are analyzed in time domain by the finite element approximation which is developed using the principle of virtual work and viscoelasticity matrices instead of shear and bulk relaxation functions as in usual formulations. The material is assumed to be isotropic, homegeneous and thermorheologically simple, which means that the temperature-time equivalence postulate is effective. The stress-strain laws are expressed by relaxation-type hereditary integrals. In spatial and time discritizations, isoparametric quadratic quadrilateral finite elements and linear time variations are adopted. For explicit derivations, the viscoelastic material is assumed to behave standard linear solid in shear and elastically in dilatation. Two-dimensional examples are solved under general temperature distributions T = T(x, t), and compared with other opproximate solutions to show the versatility of the presented analysis.

  • A treatment of wave breaking is included in the extended Boussinesq equations of Nwogu. A spatially distributed source function and sponge layers are used to reduce the reflected waves in the computa¬tional domain. The model uses fourth-order Adams predictor-corrector method to advance in time, and discretizes first-order spatial derivatives to fourth-order accuracy, and thus reducing all truncation errors to a level smaller than the dispersive terms. The generated wave fields are found to be good and the corresponding wave heights are very close to their target values. For the tests of wave breaking, although agreement is considered to be reasonable, wave heights in the inner surf zone are over-predicted. This indicates the breaking parameters in the model should be adjusted.
