  • Characteristics and properties of batteries applicable to the photovoltaic system are described in this paper. The use of a number of different types of batteries and designs depends on the many and varied requirements for battery power and the different environmental and electrical conditions under which they must operate. Most of the batteries used in PV systems are lead/acid batteries, though nickel/cadmium batteries are used for small applications in locations with extreme climates or where high reliability is essential such as spacecraft. The vanadium redox battery has been acknowledged as a promising energy storage system for a wide range of applications.

  • Some observational features on the July 5, 1995 substorm event are presented using the data from the Geotail satellite which was located at near-Earth plasma sheet, ${X}_{GSE}$$-9.6R_{E}$, and quite close to the onset sector. Near-tail magnetic field reveals the typical dipolarizations starting ar ∼ 11-4 UT until ∼ 1113 UT. During the interval, two dipolarizations occur: First dipolarization is not strong and accompanies only weak(<150km/s) earthward/dawnward plasma flows, and in the second dipolarization that follows shortly, rather large amplitude magnetic fluctuations are seen, but it initiates with no significant earthward flow. The earthward bursty flow with a maximum speed of > 450km/s was observed, but delayed by ∼ 1 min with respect to the second dipolarization initiation. These features are in conflict with the flow-braking scenario for the substorm. Rather they fit better in the near-tail current disruption scenario.

  • Recently, natural fibre composites are widely used in aerospace industries due to their good specific mechanical properties, better acoustic properties, light weight, readily availability, biodegradability, recyclability, etc. In this study, the hemp fibre woven fabrics / polypropylene based honeycomb sandwich structure were proposed for aerospace applications. Firstly, the hemp fibre woven fabrics based honeycomb sandwich structures were manufactured and experimental mechanical tests (compressive and flexural) were performed in the laboratory. Numerical simulation was also performed and analysed to validate the proposed methodology. Different complex shaped aircraft part CAD models were created and numerical analysis was carried out in order to have a better understanding about the complex honeycomb sandwich structures.

  • This paper is aimed to find out the impact of the geometrical parameters, mainly the radius and the height of a cylinder, on the SGEMP response including the famous scaling law in the classical cylinder model using a homemade PIC code UNIPIC-3D. We computed the electric fields at the center and at the edge on the emission head face with different radii and heights under normal X-rays incidence. The results show that the electric field will increase with the radius but decrease with the height. We analyze the scaling law that links the electric field product and fluence product, and whereafter an irreconcilable contradiction raises when the radius is changeable, which limits the application range of the scaling law. Moreover, the field-height-radius relation is found and described by a combination of logarithmic and minus one-quarter numerical fitting law firstly. Particle and magnetic field distributions are used to explain all the behaviors of the fields reasonably. All the findings will assist the evaluation of SGEMP response in spacecraft protection.

  • In this paper, we develop the so-called functional test model for magnetic bearing reaction wheels. The functional test model has three degree of freedom, which consists of one axial suspension from gravity and the other two axes gimbaling capability to small angle, and does not include the motor. For the control of the functional test model, we derive the optimal electromagnetic forces based on the least squares method, and use the proportional-integral-derivative controller. Then, we develop a hardware setup, which mainly consists of the digital signal processor and the 12-bit analog-to-digital and digital-to-analog converters, and show the experimental results.

  • Radar is an object-detection system that uses radio waves to determine the range, altitude, direction, or speed of objects. High power amplifier Module is the most critical part of the high-power radar transmitter systems. It can be used to detect aircraft, ships, spacecraft, guided missiles, motor vehicles, weather formations, and terrain. Research related to radar has been conducted in various fields according to improvement of the communication technology. But only performance-originated technology development has been dashed; study concerning environment duality and safety concerning reliability are still insufficient. In general, radar module is exposed to the outside, on the means of moving or fixed in a certain place. It should be guaranteed sufficient immunity for a variety of environmental stresses that can occur in the outdoor. HALT is a great process used for quickly finding failure mechanisms in a hardware design and product. By applying various kinds and extreme level of stresses, we can find the operating limits of products. In thesis, we conducted HALT test of the high power amplifier modules which used in military and automotive radar. After the test, we analyzed environmental weaknesses of high power amplifier modules using conventional construction data.

  • We investigate the critical issue on how the BBF (bursty bulk flow) is related to the substorm current wedge formation. Observationally, after analysing data sets from Geotail spacecraft at near tail and many ground magnetic observatories for 9 months period of 1996, we find three BBF events that clearly occurred at the center of the wedge with region I type FAC (field-aligned current), and two other BBF events that were seen outside the wedge sector. Theoretically, we suggest that the substorm current wedge generation by BBF is most likely when the h' VB contribution is dominant in the well-known MHD $J_{II}$ expression (Vasyliunaus, 1984) or when the divergence of the cross-tail current carried by the particle's gradient/curvature drift is predominantly sufficient at the moment of the BBF arrival at near tail.

  • In this paper, geometrical and mechanical approaches are proposed for the simulation of the draping of woven fabric onto complex parts. The geometrical discrete approach allows to define the ply shapes and fibres orientation in order to optimize the composite structural properties and the continuum meso-structural mechanical approach allows to take into account the mechanical properties of fibres and resin and the various dominating mode of deformation of woven fabrics during the forming process. Some numerical simulations of forming process are proposed and compared with the experimental results in order to demonstrate the efficiency of our approaches.

  • This paper present an attitude control using quaternions as feedback attitude errors. The Euler's eigenaxis rotation provides the shortest angular path between two attitudes. This eigenaxis rotation can be achieved by using quaternions since quaternions are related with the eigenaxis. The suggested controller uses error quaternions and body angular rates and generates a decoupling control torque that counteracts the natural gyroscopic coupling torque. The momentum dumping strategy using the earth magnetic field is also applied in this paper to unload the angular momentum of the reaction wheels used in the attitude control.

  • In this study, the operations concept of STSAT-2 which will be launched by KSLV-1, the first Korean Space Launch Vehicle, from Naro is explained. The major tasks of STSAT-2 is acquiring Lyman-alpha images of Sun by LIST(Lyman-alpha Imaging Solar Telescope) payload and the exact position of the satellite by calculating distance between STSAT-2 and SLR ground stations using SLR(Satellite Laser Ranging) payload. Also spacecraft technology verification is performed.
