  • This paper presents a method that controls facial expression in realtime of 3D avatar by having the user select a sequence of facial expressions in the space of facial expressions. The space of expression is created from about 2400 frames of facial expressions. To represent the state of each expression, we use the distance matrix that represents the distances between pairs of feature points on the face. The set of distance matrices is used as the space of expressions. Facial expression of 3D avatar is controled in real time as the user navigates the space. To help this process, we visualized the space of expressions in 2D space by using the Principal Component Analysis(PCA) projection. To see how effective this system is, we had users control facial expressions of 3D avatar by using the system. This paper evaluates the results.

  • Researchers have developed virtual reality environments to provide audience with more visually immersive experiences than previously possible. One of the most popular solutions to build the immersive VR space is a multi-projection technique. However, utilization of multiple projectors requires large spaces, expensive cost, and accurate geometry calibration among projectors. This paper presents a novel omnidirectional projection system with a single projector and a single spherical mirror. We newly designed the simple and intuitive calibration system to define the shape of environment and the relative position of mirror/projector. For successful image projection, our optimized omnidirectional image generation step solves image distortion produced by the spherical mirror and a calibration problem produced by unknown parameters such as the shape of environment and the relative position between the mirror and the projector. Additionally, the focus correction is performed to improve the quality of the projection. The experiment results show that our method can generate the optimized image given a normal panoramic image for omnidirectional projection in a rectangular space.

  • This paper briefly introduces efforts into space debris modeling towards a better understanding of space debris environment. Space debris modeling mainly consists of debris generation and orbit propagation. Debris generation can characterize and predict physical properties of fragments originating from explosions or collisions. Orbit propagation can characterize, track, and predict the behavior of individual or groups of space objects. Therefore, space debris modeling can build evolutionary models as essential tools to predict the stability of the future space debris populations. Space debris modeling is also useful and effective to improve the efficiency of measurements to be aware of the present environment.

  • Algorithms for intrinsic images reduce color differences in RGB images caused by the temperature of black-body radiators. Based on the reference light and detecting single invariant direction, these algorithms are weak in real images which can have multiple invariant directions when the scene illuminant is a colored illuminant. To solve these problems, this paper proposes a method of acquiring an intrinsic image by omnidirectional projection of an ROI and a translation of white patch in the ${\chi}$-chromaticity space. Because it is not easy to analyze an image in the three-dimensional RGB space, the ${\chi}$-chromaticity is also employed without the brightness factor in this paper. After the effect of the colored illuminant is decreased by a translation of white patch, an invariant direction is detected by omnidirectional projection of an ROI in this chromaticity space. In case the RGB image has multiple invariant directions, only one ROI is selected with the bin, which has the highest frequency in 3D histogram. And then the two operations, projection and inverse transformation, make intrinsic image acquired. In the experiments, test images were four datasets presented by Ebner and evaluation methods was the follows: standard deviation of the invariant direction, the constancy measure, the color space measure and the color constancy measure. The experimental results showed that the proposed method had lower standard deviation than the entropy, that its performance was two times higher than the compared algorithm.

  • In this paper, we propose a modified iterative pre-whitening projection statistics (MIPPS) scheme for improving multi-target detection performance in non-homogeneous clutter environments. As a non-homogeneity detection (NHD) technique of space-time adaptive processing algorithm for airborne radar, the MIPPS scheme improves the average detection probability of weak target when multiple targets with different reflection signal intensities are located in close range. Numerical results show that the conventional NHD schemes suffers from the masking effect by strong targets and clutters and the proposed MIPPS scheme outperforms the conventional schemes with respect to the average detection probability of the weak target at low signal-to-clutter ratio.

  • In this paper, we study the map projections from pseudo-sphere $S_1^2$ onto the non-lightlike surfaces in the 3-dimensional Lorentzian space, $L^3$, with curvature zero. We show geometrical means and properties of $\mathbb{R}{\times}S_1^1-cylindrical$, $S^1{\times}L-cylindrical$ and $\mathbb{R}{\times}H_0^1-cylindrical$ projections defined on $S_1^2$ to cylinders $\mathbb{R}{\times}S_1^1,\;S^1{\times}L$ and $\mathbb{R}{\times}H_0^1$, respectively, and orthographic and stereographic projections on $S_1^2$ to Lorentzian plane, $L^2$.

  • In this paper, we propose a novel method for improving defect-detection performance based on reconstruction of line-scan camera images using both the projection profiles and color space transform. The proposed method consists of RGB region segmentation, representative value reconstruction using the tracing system, and Y image reconstruction using color-space transformation. Through experiments it is demonstrated that the performance using the reconstructed image is better than that using aerial image for LCD surface inspection.

  • A dataset can be clustered by merging the bucket indices that come from the random projection of locality sensitive hashing functions. It should be noted that for this to work the merging interval must be calculated first. To improve the feasibility of large scale data clustering in high dimensional space we propose an enhanced Locality Sensitive Hashing Clustering Method. Firstly, multiple hashing functions are generated. Secondly, data points are projected to bucket indices. Thirdly, bucket indices are clustered to get class labels. Experimental results showed that on synthetic datasets this method achieves high accuracy at much improved cluster speeds. These attributes make it well suited to clustering data in high dimensional space.

  • This article introduces a methodology of designing a wavelet operator suitable for multiscale modeling. The operator matrix transforms states of a multivariable system onto projection space. In addition, it imposes a specific structure on the system matrix in a multiscale environment. To be specific, the article deals with a diagonalizing transform that is useful for decoupled control of a system. It establishes that there exists a definite relationship between the model in the measurement space and that in the projection space. Methodology for deriving the multirate perfect reconstruction filter bank, associated with the wavelet operator, is presented. The efficacy of the proposed technique is demonstrated by modeling the point kinetics nuclear reactor. The outcome of the multiscale modeling approach is compared with that in the single-scale approach to bring out the advantage of the proposed method.

  • Since the mobile platform and the manipulator mounted on it move at the same time in a mobile manipulator, the risk of mutual collision increases. Most of the studies on collision avoidance of mobile manipulators cannot be applied to differential drive type mobile platforms or the end-effector tends to deviate from the desired trajectory for collision avoidance. In this study, a collision avoidance algorithm based on null space projection (CANS) that solves these two problems is proposed. To this end, a modified repulsive force that overcomes the non-holonomic constraints of a mobile platform is generated by adding a virtual repulsive force in the direction of its instantaneous velocity. And by converting this repulsive force into a repulsive velocity and applying it to the null space, the end-effector of the robot avoids a collision while moving along its original trajectory. The proposed CANS algorithm showed excellent performance through self-collision avoidance tests and door opening tests.
