  • In this paper, we propose music and voice separation using kernel sptectrogram models backfitting based on log-spectral amplitude estimator. The existing method separates sources based on the estimate of a desired objects by training MSE (Mean Square Error) designed Winer filter. We introduce rather clear music and voice signals with application of log-spectral amplitude estimator, instead of adaptation of MSE which has been treated as an existing method. Experimental results reveal that the proposed method shows higher performance than the existing methods.

  • The reduction of carbon dioxide emissions becomes a global issue, the main source of carbon dioxide emissions in the Asian region is the energy conversion sector, especially coal-fired power plants. We are working to develop technologies that will at least limit the increase in carbon dioxide emissions from the thermal power plants as one way to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. Our research aims to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by removing iron oxide scale from the feedwater system of thermal power plants using a superconducting high-gradient magnetic separation (HGMS) system, thereby reducing the loss of power generation efficiency. In this paper, the background of thermal power plants in Asia is outlined, followed by a case study of the introduction of a chemical cleaning line at an actual thermal power plant in Japan, and the possibility of introducing it into the thermal power plants in China based on the results.

  • Although ovalbumin makes up 54% of the total egg white proteins, individual protein usage is rare. The primary applications of ovalbumin in the food industry relate to other proteins, such as whole egg whites. Ovalbumin has remarkable functional properties, such as those of gelation, foaming, and emulsification, which are crucial in the processing of food, however, its application as a standalone functional protein is severely constrained due to separation issues. In recent years, new methodologies for the large-scale separation of ovalbumin have emerged. Meantime, ovalbumin was identified as a good source to produce bioactive peptides with a variety of functional properties, including antibacterial, antioxidant, and angiotensin-converting-enzyme inhibitory actions, according to research. Newly discovered bioactive peptides from ovalbumin can be used in the food sector in addition to their well-known functional properties to create health-promoting products. Benefits extend beyond the food business to numerous other sectors, such as the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries. Consequently, a gap between the existing and prospective future uses is found. The main goals of this study were to determine some possible factors for the long-term neglect of the major protein and to determine the growing potential for applications of ovalbumin and peptides.

  • In the present study, we examine the dependence of solar proton peak flux at SOHO and STEREO on 3-D CME parameters (radial speed, angular width, and longitudinal angular separation between its source region and the magnetic footpoints of spacecraft). For this we consider 38 proton enhancements of 16 SEP events observed by SOHO, STEREO-A, and/or B from 2010 August to 2013 June. As a result, we find that the enhancements are strongly dependent on these three parameters. The correlation coefficient between proton peak flux and CME speed is about 0.42 for the cases the footpoints are located inside the lateral boundaries of angular widths, while there is no correlation for the events outside the boundaries. The correlation coefficient between peak flux and angular separation is -0.51. We find that most of strong proton events occur when their angular separations are closer to zero, supporting that most of the proton fluxes are generated near the CME noses rather than their flanks.

  • In this study, the mechanisms of binary droplet collision were studied with diesel, ethanol and purified water. The droplet collisions of liquid droplet have been investigated for the same droplet diameter. In order to obtain the digital images of the droplet collision behavior, the experimental equipment was composed of the droplet generating system and the droplet visualization system. The droplets were produced by the vibrating orifice monodisperse generator. The visualization system consisted of a long distance microscope, a light source, and a high speed camera. The outcomes of binary droplet collision can be divided into four regimes, bouncing, coalescence, reflexive separation and stretching separation. The impact angle and the relative velocity of binary droplet are main parameters of collision phenomena, so the transition mechanism of droplet collision can be divided by the impact parameter.

  • For blind source separation of convolutive mixtures, FDICA(Frequency Domain Independent Component Analysis) algorithms are generally used. Since FDICA algorithm such as Sawada FDICA, IVA(Independent Vector Analysis) works on the frequency bin basis with a natural gradient descent method, it takes much time to converge. In this paper, we propose a new method to improve convergence speed in FDICA algorithm. The proposed method reduces the number of iteration drastically in the process of natural gradient descent method by applying a weighted inner product constraint of unmixing matrix. Experimental results have shown that the proposed method achieved large improvement of convergence speed without degrading the separation performance of the baseline algorithms.

  • The unsteady flow characteristics and the related noise of separated incompressible laminar boundary layer flows (Re$\sub$$\delta$/* = 614, 868, and 1,063) are numerically investigated. The characteristic lines of the wall pressure are examined to identify the primary noise source, related with the unsteady motion of the vortex at the reattachment point of the separation bubble. The generation and propagation of the vortex-induced noise in the separated laminar boundary layer are computed by the method of Computational Aero-Acoustics (CAA), and the effects of Reynolds number, Mach number and adverse pressure gradient strength are examined.

  • An improvement to the existing blind signal separation (BSS) method has been made in this paper. The proposed method models the inherent signal dependency observed in acoustic object to separate the real-world convolutive sound mixtures. The frequency domain approach requires solving the well known permutation problem, and the problem had been successfully solved by a vector representation of the sources whose multidimensional joint densities have a certain amount of dependency expressed by non-spherical distributions. Especially for speech signals, we observe strong dependencies across neighboring frequency bins and the decrease of those dependencies as the bins become far apart. The non-spherical joint density model proposed in this paper reflects this property of real-world speech signals. Experimental results show the improved performances over the spherical joint density representations.

  • This research was conducted to figure out the feasibility of several sorption materials to treat various pollutants in road runoff. In advance of the major feasibility test with various sorption materials, the separation process with $1.2{\mu}m$ filter was conducted and showed that slight portion of pollutants was removed(Orgamic pollutant - 20%, Nutrient salt - 50%, Heavy metals - 0~30%). To remove dissolved pollutants in runoff, various materials were tested through an isotherm sorption experiment. As a result, GAC showed most effective material among them to lessen most contaminants such as organic compounds and nutrients. On the other hand, ion-exchange resin and Zeolite showed limited usefulness on the some heavy metals. Freundlich model was most suitable for the current experiment data, and the amount of adsorbent (GAC) could calculated based on this model.

  • Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common rheumatic pathology. One of the major objectives of OA research is the development of early diagnostic strategies such as those using proteomic technology. Synovial fluid (SF) in OA patients is a potential source of biomarkers for OA. The efficient and reliable preparation of SF proteomes is a critical step towards biomarker discovery. In this study, we have optimized a pretreatment method for twodimensional gel electrophoresis (2DE) separation of the SF proteome, by enriching low-abundance proteins and simultaneously removing hyaluronic acid, albumin, and IgG. SF samples pretreated using this optimized method were then evaluated by 1DE and 2DE separation followed by immunodetection of cartilage oligomeric matrix protein (COMP), a known OA biomarker, and by the identification of 3 proteins (apolipoprotein, haptoglobin precursor, and fibrinogen D fragment) that are related to joint diseases.
