  • This study is to remove several organic pollutants from wastewater by non-dispersive membrane solvent extraction technique. The distribution coefficients of several solvents were determined and the experimental system was operated counter-currently and cocurrently with respect to the aqueous phase and solvent. In these experiments, as the flow rate of aqueous solution inclosed, due to being shortened contact time to solvent, the rate of removal of organic pollutants decreased and as the flow rate of solvent increased, the rate of removal increased. Meanwhile, the rate of removal of organic pollutants for the countercurrent flow system was higher than that for the occurrent flow system.

  • This study was carried out to investigate on the removal of oily and particulate soils from silk fabrics. Various kinds of solvents were used on the removal of two kinds of soils treated into the silk fabrics. The removal of oily soil was analyzed by liquid scintillation counting method, and the removal of oil and carbon particulate mixed soils was evaluated by measuring of reflectance on the surface of soiled fabrics with/without drysoap in solvent washing by Terg-o-tometer. The surfaces of fabrics were also observed by SEM before and after washing. The results obtained were as follows : oily soils were removed efficiently by various kinds of solvents regardless of kinds of silk fabrics in short washing time. The removal effect of solvents from the soiled silk fabrics were high in the order of isopropyl alcohol>trichloroethane>monochlorobenzene>ethylether>perchloroethylene. Oil and carbon particulate mixed soils could be efficiently removed by adding of drysoap in solvent washing. The removal of mixed soils were increased drastically with rinsing and increased drysoap. The removal of soils was more efficiently removed from degummed silk fabrics than from the raw silk fabrics.

  • The high content of potassium in molasses limits its usage as a raw material for stock feed. Moreover, its high viscosity makes it difficult to develop an efficient removal process. In this study, ion exchange and solvent extraction experiments have been performed to investigate the removal of potassium from a mixture of molasses with water. Cationic exchange resins (AG50W-X8 and Diphonix) showed a high loading percentage of potassium but the occurrence of breakthrough in few bed volumes was a drawback to the industrial application. Among the cationic extractants (D2EHPA, PC 88A, Cyanex 272) tested in this study, saponified PC 88A was found to be the best extractant for the removal of potassium. Batch simulation studies on a three stage counter current extraction confirmed that 85% of potassium was removed from 50 wt % molasses solution in water by using saponifed PC 88A.

  • Metal ions exist in seawater, groundwater and industrial wastewaters. These source waters can be recycled if their concentrations are reduced. A number of processes can be applied for this purpose. Liquid-liquid extraction is one of the promising methods. In this paper, experimental results are presented on the removal of Cr(VI) using Aliquat-336, a reactive carrier, in sunflower oil (a non-toxic solvent). The performance of this new system is compared with those of kerosene (a toxic solvent). The extent of removal of Cr(VI) from samples with high and low concentrations are presented. The process was upgraded to a bench-scale module that can selectively remove about 50-90% Cr(VI) from samples of groundwater. Thus this process can produce water within the acceptable range for recycling and for use in secondary purposes such as irrigation.

  • In this study, the supercritical carbon dioxide ($scCO_2$)/ n-butyl acetate (n-BA) co-solvent system was employed to remove an unexposed negative photoresist (PR) from the surface of a silicon wafer. In addition, the selectivity of the $scCO_2$/n-BA co-solvent system was confirmed for the unexposed and exposed negative PR. Optimum conditions for removal of the unexposed PR were obtained from various conditions such as pressure, temperature and n-BA ratio. The n-BA was highly soluble in $scCO_2$ without cloud point and phase separation in mostly experimental conditions. However, the $scCO_2$/n-BA co-solvent was phase separated at 100 bar, above $80^{\circ}C$. The unexposed and exposed PR was swelled in $scCO_2$ solvent at all experimental conditions. The complete removal of unexposed PR was achieved from the reaction condition of 160 bar, 10 min, $40^{\circ}C$ and 75 wt% n-BA in $scCO_2$, as measured by ellipsometry. The exposed photoresist showed high stability in the $scCO_2$/n-BA co-solvent system, which indicated that the $scCO_2$/n-BA co-solvent system has high selectivity for the PR removal in photo lithograph process. The $scCO_2$/n-BA co-solvent system not only prevent swelling of exposed PR, but also provide efficient and powful performance to removal unexposed PR.

  • The possibility of using lime/mineral solvent solutions has been investigated to effectively remove T-P from wastewater. The lime solvent solution showed an initial T-P removal efficiency of about 90% compared to the less efficient mineral solvent solution removal. High pH and dissolved Ca2+ can form hydroxyapatite minerals (Ca5(PO4)3(OH) or Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2 and can also remove SS and COD from wastewater. Feldspar dissolution solution can be reused twice because the Ca limited sample content provided, but further research is needed to discover other influencing parameters that control the T-P removal efficiency in real wastewater. Because it plays an important role of alkalinity in T-P removal, the success rate is limited. In practical applications, it is obtained according to the pH value wastewater in the environment. The results obtained in this study can highlight new insights on the use of limestone/dissolved mineral solutions to control T-P in wastewater, instead of directly using commercial chemical agents that can produce large amounts of unreacted chemical sludge.

  • To achieve the fabrication of high-quality Ag-coated Cu particles through a wet chemical process, we reported herein pretreatment conditions using an ammonium-based mixed solvent for the removal of a $Cu_2O$ layer on Cu particles that were oxidized in air for 1 hr at $200^{\circ}C$ or for 3 days at room temperature. Furthermore, we discussed the results of post-Ag plating with respect to removal level of the oxide layer. X-ray diffraction results revealed that the removal rate of the oxide layer is directly proportional to the concentration of the pretreatment solvent. With the results of Auger electron spectroscopy using oxidized Cu plates, the concentrations required to completely remove 50-nm-thick and 2-nm-thick oxides within 5 min were determined to be X2.5 and X0.13. However, the optimal concentrations in an actual Ag plating process using Cu powder increased to X0.4 and X0.5, respectively, because the oxidation in powder may be accelerated and the complete removal of oxide should be tuned to the thickest oxide layer among all the particles. Back-scattered electron images showed the formation of pure fine Ag particles instead of a uniform and smooth Ag coating in the Ag plating performed after incomplete removal of the oxide layer, indicating that the remaining oxide layer obstructs heterogeneous nucleation and plating by reduced Ag atoms.

  • Post-synthesis is used to synthesize organic hybrid inorganic mesoporous sieves. In this method, the activity and structure of the base sieve are crucial to obtain the definable hybrid materials. The chemical and physical properties of the base can be largely changed either by the final step of its synthesizing processes, by template removal which is accomplished with the oxidative thermal decomposition (burning) method or by solvent extraction method. In this paper we compared two methods for the post-synthesis of organic hybrid MCM-48. When the template was extracted with HCl/alcohol mixture, the final product showed larger pore size, larger pore volume and better crystallinity compared to the case of the thermal decomposition. The reactivity of the surface silanol group of template free MCM-48 was also checked with an alkylsilylation reagent $CH_2=CHSi(OC_2H_5)_3$. Raman and $^{29}Si$ NMR spectra of MCM-48 in the test reaction indicated that more of the organic group was grafted to the surface of the sample after the template was removed with the solvent extraction method. Direct synthesis of vinyl-MCM-48 was also investigated and its characteristics were compared with the case of post-synthesis. From the results, it was suggested that the structure and chemical reactivity can be maintained in the solvent extraction method and that organic grafting after the solvent extraction can be a good candidate to synthesize a definable hybrid porous material.

  • A validation study was conducted to determine the efficacy of solvent/Detergent (S/D) inactivation and Q-Sepharose column chromatographic removal of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) during the manufacturing of a high purity antihemopilic factor VIII (GreenMono) from human plasma. S/D treatment using the organic solvent, tri (n-butyl) phosphate, and the detergent, Trition X-100, was a robust and effective step in eliminating HIV-1. The HIV-1 titer was reduced from an initial titer of 8.3 log10 TCID50 to undetectable levels within one minute of S/D treatment, HIV-1 was effectively partitioned form factor VIII during Q-Sepharose column chromatography with the log reduction factor of 4.1 . These results strongly assure the safety of GreenMono From HIV.
