  • In this article we introduce a numerical method, named Gegenbauer wavelets method, which is derived from conventional Gegenbauer polynomials, for solving fractional initial and boundary value problems. The operational matrices are derived and utilized to reduce the linear fractional differential equation to a system of algebraic equations. We perform the convergence analysis for the Gegenbauer wavelets method. We also combine Gegenbauer wavelets operational matrix method with quasilinearization technique for solving fractional nonlinear differential equation. Quasilinearization technique is used to discretize the nonlinear fractional ordinary differential equation and then the Gegenbauer wavelet method is applied to discretized fractional ordinary differential equations. In each iteration of quasilinearization technique, solution is updated by the Gegenbauer wavelet method. Numerical examples are provided to illustrate the efficiency and accuracy of the methods.

  • In hot rolling process at steel plant, cooling of the rolled strip at the exit of the rolling mill is one of the most important processes that would decide the quality of products. To guarantee the thermal equity over the strip, the device called an edge-masking unit is being used. That is installed between the strip and the sprayers to cover the side edge of the strip from spraying water. The accuracy of positioning the bracket is the key to this operation. A machine vision technique can be applied to measure the position of the side edges before an as-rolled strip enters into the cooling facility to rectify the error of preset position of the bracket. This paper shows the simulation result of applying the machine vision technique to measuring the position of a strip and suggests the solution for the target.

  • This paper presents an error-bounded B-spline fitting technique to approximate unorganized data within a prescribed error tolerance. The proposed approach includes two main steps: leastsquares minimization and error-bounded approximation. A B-spline hypervolume is first described as a data representation model, which includes its mathematical definition and the data structure for implementation. Then we present the least-squares minimization technique for the generation of an approximate B-spline model from the given data set, which provides a unique solution to the problem: overdetermined, underdetermined, or ill-conditioned problem. We also explain an algorithm for the error-bounded approximation which recursively refines the initial base model obtained from the least-squares minimization until the Euclidean distance between the model and the given data is within the given error tolerance. The proposed approach is demonstrated with some examples to show its usefulness and a good possibility for various applications.

  • This paper proposes a new stereo matching algorithm using both the divide-and-conquer method and the DSI(Disparity Space Image) technique. Firstly, we find salient feature points on the each scanline of the left image and find the corresponding feature point at the right image. Then the problem of a scanline is divided into several subproblems. By this way, matching of the subintervals is implemented by using the DSI technique. The DSI technique for stereo matching process is a very efficient solution to find matches and occlusions simultaneously and it is very speedy. In addition, we apply three occluding patterns to process occluded regions, as a result, we reduce mismatches at the disparity discontinuity.

  • IB (immersed boundary) method is one of the prominent tool in computational fluid dynamics for the analysis of flows over complex geometries. The IB technique simplyfies the solution procedure by eliminating the requirement of complex body fitted grids and it is also superior in terms of memory requirement. In this study we have developed numerical code (FOTRAN) for the analysis of 2D flow over a cylinder using IB technique. The code is validated by comparing the wake lengths and separation angles given by Guo et. al. We employed fractional-step procedure for solving the Navier-Stokes equations governing the flow and discrete forcing IB technique for imposing boundary conditions. Also we have developed a 3D code for the backward-facing-step flow and flow over a sphere. The reattachment length in backward-facing-step flow was compared with the one given by Nie and Armaly, which has proven the validity of our code.

  • A high-order accurate Euler flow solver based on a discontinuous Galerkin method has been developed for the numerical simulation of unsteady flows on unstructured meshes. A multi-level solution-adaptive mesh refinement/coarsening technique was adopted to enhance the resolution of numerical solutions efficiently by increasing mesh density in the high-gradient region. An acoustic wave scattering problem was investigated to assess the accuracy of the present discontinuous Galerkin solver, and a supersonic flow in a wind tunnel with a forward facing step was simulated by using the adaptive mesh refinement technique. It was shown that the present discontinuous Galerkin flow solver can capture unsteady flows including the propagation and scattering of the acoustic waves as well as the strong shock waves.

  • This paper introduces a novel scheme for determining the thermal diffusivity of solids using the photothermal mirage technique. The suggested scheme extends the thermal-wave coupling method, employing the solution to the heat conduction equation in close proximity to the pump beam. Therefore, determination of thermal diffusivity is possible by detecting the mirage signal with small separation between the probe and pump beams, with enhanced intensity of the mirage signal. Though the method requires information about the probe-beam height, the absolute transverse position of the probe beam need not be known as it is automatically evaluated by the iterative-computation procedure. The thermal diffusivity of Ni is measured by the proposed scheme and the result demonstrates good agreement with the literature value to within 5 %.

  • The combination of ultrasound echo images with digital particle image velocimetry (DPIV) method has resulted in a two-dimensional, two-component velocity field measurement technique appropriate for opaque flow conditions including blood flow in clinical applications. Advanced PIV processing algorithms including an iterative scheme and window of offsetting were used to increase spatial resolution. The optimum concentration of the ultrasound contrast agent used for seeding was explored. Velocity validation tests in fully developed laminar pipe flow and pulsatile flow showed good agreement with both optical PIV measurements and the known analytic solution. These studies indicate that echo PIV is a promising technique for the non-invasive measurement of velocity profiles and shear stress.

  • Mechanical properties of in-service facilities are required to evaluate the integrity of power plants and chemical plants. Non-destructive technique can be used to evaluate the mechanical properties. To investigate the mechanical properties using ultrasonic technique, the four classes of thermally aged specimens were prepared using an artificially accelerated aging method. Ultrasonic tests, tensile tests, fracture toughness tests, and hardness tests were performed for the specimens. Then the mechanical properties were compared with ultrasonic parameters such as attenuation and non-linear parameter. From the investigation, we confirm that the ultrasonic parameter can be used to evaluate the mechanical properties.

  • Performance of thin films fabricated with the electrostatic spray deposition (ESD) technique is strongly governed by surface morphology, which depends on deposition parameters such as deposition time and temperature, solution properties, and surface characteristics of substrates. In this article, the state of the art on the relationships between the surface morphology and the deposition parameters is presented. Also studies on the electro-hydrodynamic atomization process and the motion of drops relevant to the ESD technique are briefly reviewed, and the future research works are suggested.
