  • The water permeation in protective coatings, which may greatly influence the corrosion protective property of these coatings, was studied using the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy technique. During the absorption of water in protective coatings immersed in electrolyte solution, the change of coating capacitance with concentration of electrolyte was determined from impedance measurements. When water absorption or desorption of coatings occured by exposing the coatings to electrolyte solutions of different concentration, increase in impedance caused by desorption of water was found to be higher in the case of thicker film. The amount of water absorbed in coatings changed with concentration of electrolyte. The water taken up in coatings from the solution of lower electrolyte concentration was deserted by contact with the solution of higher concentration. The uptake of water in protective coatings varied depending on the type of coating ingredient especially binder.

  • By employing coincidence degree theory and using Halanay-type inequality technique, a sufficient condition is given to guarantee the existence and global exponential stability of periodic solutions for the two-dimensional discrete-time Cohen-Grossberg BAM neural networks. Compared with the results in existing papers, in our result on the existence of periodic solution, the boundedness conditions on the activation are replaced with global Lipschitz conditions. In our result on the existence and global exponential stability of periodic solution, the assumptions in existing papers that the value of activation functions at zero is zero are removed.

  • In order to reduce the cost of product and save the processing time, optimal nesting of two-dimensional part is an important application in number of industries like shipbuilding and garment making. There have been many studies on finding the optimal solution of two-dimensional nesting. The problem of two-dimensional nesting has a non-deterministic characteristic and there have been various attempts to solve the problem by reducing the size of problem rather than solving the problem as a whole. Heuristic method and linearlization are often used to find an optimal solution of the problem. In this paper, theoretical and practical nesting algorithm for rectangular, circular and irregular shape of two-dimensional parts is proposed. Both No-Fit-Polygon and Minkowski-Sum are used for solving the overlapping problem of two parts and the dynamic programming technique is used for reducing the number search spae in order to find an optimal solution. Also, nesting designer's expertise is complied into the proposed algorithm to supplement the heuristic method.

  • In the structural analysis procedure using finite element technique, the performance of a linear equation solver is critical because the linear equation solving part spends most of the computing time for finite element analysis codes. However, most of researchers are still using inefficient profile-based direct solvers such as the band solver or the skyline solver. In this research, we introduce the multifrontal solution method as an efficient direct solution method for structural analysis, and show the efficiency and performance of the multifrontal solution method by comparing the performance of our own implementation of the multifrontal method with the band solver or the skyline solver. In addition, we also compare the performance of our solver with other implementations of the multifrontal method such as WSMP and MUMPS as well as commercial structural analysis packages such as ABAQUS and NASTRAN. Through the performance test results, the usefulness and efficiency of our domain-wise multifrontal solver for structural analysis is shown.

  • Using the anisotropic etching characteristics or $N_2H_4-H_2O$ solution, Si diaphragm was fabricated for the integrated sensor. The optimal composition and temperature of the solution in Si etching process was established to be 50mol% $N_2H_4$ in water at $105{\pm}2^{\circ}C$ for both higher etch rate(=$2.6{\mu}m/min$) and better surface quality of etched {100} planes. Under the optimal etching condition, the electrochemical etch stop technique was employed to form Si diaphragm for pressure sensor and diaphragm thickness was exactly controlled to $20{\pm}2{\mu}m$.

  • End-Labeled Free-Solution Electrophoresis (ELFSE) is a new technique that is a promising bioconjugate method for DNA sequencing (or separation) and genotyping by both capillary and microfluidic device electrophoresis. Because ELFSE enables high-resolution electrophoretic separation in aqueous buffer alone (i.e., without a polymer matrix), it eliminates the need to load viscous polymer networks into electrophoresis microchannels. To achieve microchannel DNA separations with high performance, ELFSE requires monodisperse perturbing entities (i.e., drag-tags), which create a large amount of frictional drag when pulled behind DNA during free-solution electrophoresis, and which have other properties suitable for microchannel electrophoresis. In this article, the theoretical concepts of ELFSE and the required characteristics of the drag-tag molecules for the ultimate performance of ELFSE are reviewed. Additionally, the merits and limitations of current drag-tags are also discussed in the context of recent experimental data of ELFSE separation (or sequencing).

  • ZnO 2-D nanowall structure with around 100 nm thickness, which is composed of tens of nm scale ZnO single crystals, was fabricated through the low temperature chemical solution growth method. Electro Chemical Deposition (ECD) technique was applied to attach the ZnO seed crystals on ITO coated glass substrate. The ZnO nanowall structure was grown in the 0.015 mol$\%$ of aqueous solution of zinc nitrate and hexamethenamine at 60$^{\circ}C$ for 20 - 40 h. The nanowall structure depends on the ECD condition or the applied voltage and duration time. The nanowall shows a photoluminescence around 550 - 700 nm spectrum range.

  • This paper considers a problem of configuring both physical backbone and logical virtual path (VP) networks in a reconfigurable asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) network where links are subject to failures. The objective is to determine jointly the VP assignment, the capacity assignment of physical links and the bandwidth allocation of VPs, and the routing assignment of traffic demand at least cost. The network cost includes backbone link capacity expansion cost and penalty cost for not satisfying the maximum throughput of the traffic due to link failures or insufficient link capacities. The problem is formulated as a zero-one non-linear mixed integer programming problem, for which an effective solution procedure is developed by using a Lagrangean relaxation technique for finding a lower bound and a heuristic method exploited for improving the upper bound of any intermediate solution. The solution procedure is tested for its effectiveness with various numerical examples.

  • The effect of main chain structure of anion-containing copolyesters on the properties of copolyester sizing agents was investigated. The copolyesters were prepared by conventional two step polymerization technique from DMT, DMI, DMS, EG, and DEG. The copolyesters synthesized were characterized by atomic absorption spectroscopy, $^1$H-NMR Spectroscopy, GC, FTIR Spectroscopy, and DSC. The solubility decreased as the DMT content increased. The copolyesters having DMT:DMI = 1:1 showed the minimum viscosity. The effect of EG content on the solution stability was not clear and the samples having high DMI content showed better solution stability. The water resistance was best when only DMI and EG were used, while it was worst when DMT:DMI was 1:0.

  • Typically, it is hard to find a closed form solution of option pricing formula under an asset governed by a change point process. In this paper we derive a closed-form solution of the valuation function for an American perpetual put option under an asset having a change point. Structural changes are formulated through a change-point process with a Markov chain. The modified smooth-fit technique is used to obtain the closed-form valuation function. We also guarantee the optimality of the solution via the proof of a corresponding verification theorem. Numerical examples are included to illustrate the results.
