  • We developed a miniaturized solid-state carbonate ion-selective electrode (carbonate ISE) based on one-component room temperature vulcanizing type silicone rubber 730 (730 RTV) without adding plasticizer to the matrix. The optimized carbonate ion selective membrane is prepared with 85.8 wt% of 730 RTV, 11.1 wt% of trifluoroacetyl-p-decylbenzene (TFADB), and 3.1 wt% of tridodecyl-methylammonium chloride (TDMACl). This carbonate ISE exhibited excellent potentiometric properties (i.e., slope: 26.3 mV/dec; selectivity: $logKT^{pot}_{CO_{2},Cl^-}$= -4.00 and $logKT^{pot}_{TCO_{2},Sal^-}$=1.69); and detection limit for $TCO_2:\;4.0{\times}10^{-4}M$). In addition, the early potentiometric properties of the solid-state sensor with optimized membrane composition were not deteriorated for more than 60 days.

  • In recent years, environments of our globe has been getting worse as a result of rapid growth of socioeconomic activities. The global environmental issues of acid rain, green house effect and ozone depletion are caused by various chemical pollutants, emitted from industries, automobiles and home. Most of these pollutants are produced by combustion processes. CO2 as a chief criminal of the greenhouse effect is a main combustion product of fossil fuels. Development of solid-state electrochemical devices for detecting CO2 is demonstrated based on various combination of solid electrolytes and auxiliary sensing materials. The object of this research is to develop various sensor performance for solid electrolyte gas sensor, and to test gas sensor performance manufactured. So we try to present a guidance for developing potential type gas sensor. We concentrated on development of manufacturing process and performance test.

  • A new synthesis route for Pt nanoparticles by direct electrochemical reduction of a solid-state Pt ion precursor ($K_2PtCl_6$) is demonstrated. Solid $K_2PtCl_6$-supported polyethyleneimine (PEI) coatings on the surface of glassy carbon electrode were prepared by simple mixing of solid $K_2PtCl_6$ into a 1.0% PEI solution. The potential cycling or a constant potential in a PBS (pH 7.4) medium were applied to reduce the solid $K_2PtCl_6$ precursor. The reduction of Pt(IV) began at around -0.2 V and the reduction potential was ca. -0.4 V. A steady state current was achieved after 10 potential cycling scans, indicating that continuous formation of Pt nanoparticles by electrochemical reduction occurred for up to 10 cycles. After applying the reduction potential of -0.6 V for 300 s, Pt nanoparticles with diameters ranging from $0.02-0.5{\mu}m$ were observed, with an even distribution over the entire glassy carbon electrode surface. Characteristics of the Pt nanoparticles, including their performance in electrochemical reduction of $H_2O_2$ are examined. A distinct reduction peak observed at about -0.20 V was due to the electrocatalytic reduction of $H_2O_2$ by Pt nanoparticles. From the calibration plot, the linear range for $H_2O_2$ detection was 0.1-2.0 mM and the detection limit for $H_2O_2$ was found to be 0.05 mM.

  • Nanopore DNA sequencing is an emerging and promising technique that can potentially realize the goal of a low-cost and high-throughput method for analyzing human genome. Especially, solid-state nanopores have relatively high mechanical stability, simple surface modification, and facile fabrication process without the need for labeling or amplification of PCR (polymerized chain reaction) in DNA sequencing. For these advantages of solid-sate nanopores, the use of solid-state nanopores has been extensively considered for developing a next generation DNA sequencing technology. Solid-state nanopore sequencing technique can determine and count charged molecules such as single-stranded DNA, double-stranded DNA, or RNA when they are driven to pass through a membrane nanopore between two electrolytes of cis-trans chambers with applied bias voltage by measuring the ionic current which varies due to the existence of the charged particles in the nanopore. Recently, many researchers have suggested that nanopore-based sensors can be competitive with other third-generation DNA sequencing technologies, and may be able to rapidly and reliably sequence the human genome for under $1,000.

  • In this study, a sensor for detecting corrosion of rebar embedded in reinforced concrete structures was fabricated and its performance was verified. In order to monitor the open circuit potential(OCP) of the rebar embedded in reinforced concrete, a concrete embedded solid electrode was constructed as a sensor using MnO2. The OCP of the rebar could be observed using a sensor and a data logger. The decrease of the OCP to -510mV (vs.MnO2) or less was judged to be corrosion of the rebar. Since it is a solid-mediated sensor, it is more stable and durable than an electrode using an aqueous solution, and it is considered that the corrosion state of the rebar can be monitored for a long period of time.

  • It is considered that the urea injection DeNOx SCR(selective catalytic reduction) system is the only promising method to satisfy the worldwide NOx emission standards. As for the theoretical aspect, reactants of NO and $NO_2$ with $NH_3$ produce $H_2O$, $N_2$ and $O_2$ which do not harm human beings and environmental as well. The realization of maximum NOx conversion (without using a post oxidation catalyst) is only possible with closed loop controlled urea dosing. It means built-in $NH_3$ gas sensor have to be developed for detecting accurate $NH_3$ concentration for the feedback system. Using YSZ(yttria-stabilized zirconia) as a solid state electrolyte and $In_2O_3$ as a sensing material, this paper aims to study dependable $NH_3$ gas sensor for the promising solution of DeNOx technology, which have a reproducible electric output signal, a high sensitivity and fast response.

  • This paper presents a method to compensate the drift of solid-state inertial sensors for control applications. A solid-state gyroscope is evaluated via both theoretical and experimental analyses. From the analytical results, a heuristic compensation method for the drift of the gyroscope is proposed. Experimental results on inverted pendulum control show that the proposed method is feasible since compensated signals from the gyroscope are successfully used in the feedback loop to control the inverted pendulum system.

  • This study focuses on the development of the Electrochemical type $CO_2$ sensor Module by using solid electrolyte which was first developed in our country. The module applied the creative fundamentals that the voltage state generated from Electro-chemical reaction using new materials is converted into $CO_2$ ppm. The study verified the accurate of Electromotive Force(EMF) through the experiment using high-impedance opamp(INA332) to measure EMF which ranges from 100mV to 600mV to be outputted from $CO_2$ sensor, and the small electric current of some nano-ampere(nA)
