Inter Landau Level Optical Absorption in Graphene Under Ultra-high Magnetic Field

  • Graphene shows diverse novel physical properties arising from its peculiar electronic states, so called Dirac electrons. Especially, effect of magnetic field is very unique, exhibiting exotic Landau level (LL) splitting. LLs are substantially modified by spins of Dirac electrons and pseudo-spins. The degeneracy of LLs is lifted to show splitting by electron-electron interaction and by the Zeeman effect. We investigated the magneto-optical absorption of graphene subjected to ultra-high magnetic field. Samples were prepared by the CVD method deposited on GaAs and Quart substrate. We have confirmed existence of graphene on each substrate by the micro-Raman spectroscopy. Next, we conducted magneto-absorption measurements in magnetic field up to 120 T by the single-turn coil (STC) method. We could observe absorption peak at 65 T and 100 T, respectively, probably arising from the LL inter-band transitions.

  • Due to the reinforcement of government's DSM(Demand Side Management) policy. Solid State Meter was introduced in Korea since 1993 and it is applied to the high voltage customer exceeding 100kW in order to equalize daily load curve. In recent days, KEPCO has a Plan to use the Solid State Meter which has a data recording and remote meter-reading function for low voltage customer to introduce the real-time pricing system and reduce peak power in the near future. So, this paper suggests the specification and function of Solid State Meter.

A Study on the Solid State Diffusion Bonding of Ti-6Al-4V Alloy (Ti-6Al-4V합금의 고상 확산접합에 관한 연구)

  • Solid state diffusion bonding is the joining process performed by creep and diffusion, which is accelerated by heating below melting temperature and proper pressing, in vacuum or shielding gas atmosphere. By this process we can obtain sufficient joint which can't be expected from the fusion welding. For Ti-6Al-4V alloy, the optimum solid state diffusion bonding condition and mechanical properties of the joint were found, and micro void morphology at bond interface was observed by SEM. The results of tensile test showed sufficient joint, whose mechanical properties are similar to that of base metal. 850$^{\circ}$C, 3MPa is considered as the optimum bonding condition. Void morphology at interface is long and flat at the initial stage. As the percentage of bonded area increases, however, small and round voids are found. Variation of void shape can be explained as follows. As for the void shrinkage mechanism, at the initial stage, power law creep is the dominant, but diffusion mechanism is dominant when the percentage of bonded area is increased.

  • Solid-state processing via the bulk mechanical alloying enables us to directly fabricate $Mg_2X$ semi-conductive material performs. Precise control of chemical composition leads to investigation on the dilution and enrichment of X in $Mg_2X$. Two types of solid-state reactivity are introduced: e.g. synthesis of $Mg_2Si$ from elemental mixture Mg-Si is nucleation-controlled process while synthesis of $Mg_2Sn$ from Mg-Sn, diffusion-controlled process. Thermoelectricity of these $Mg_2X$ is evaluated for discussion on the validity and effectiveness of this new PM route as a reliable tool for fabrication of thermoelectric compounds.

Home-built Solid-state NMR Probe for Membrane Protein Studies

  • Proteins in highly oriented lipid bilayer samples are useful to study membrane protein structure determination. Planar lipid bilayers aligned and supported on glass slide were prepared. These stack of glass slide with planar lipid bilayers are not well fit for commercial solid-state NMR probe with round coil. Therefore, homebuilt solid-state NMR probe was built and used for a stack of thin glass plates and RF coil is wrapping directly around the flat square sample. The overall filling factor of the coil is much better and the large surface area enhances the extent to orientation by providing uniform environments for the phospholipids and the high ratio of circumference to area reduces edge effects. $^1H\;and\;^{15}N$ double resonance probe for 400 MHz NMR (9.4T) with a flat coil (coil size: 11 mm ${\times}$ 20 mm ${\times}$ 4 mm) is constructed and tested.

  • Hydrogen is the most abundant element in the universe. Although hydrogen can produce three times more energy than gasoline and seven times than coal, the most challenging problem in utilizing hydrogen as energy carrier is its storage problem. In contrast to the liquid hydrocarbon, hydrogen can not be stored or transported easily and safely because of its extremely low boiling point(21K). Recently scientists have made a tremendous achievement in storing hydrogen capacity in solid state materials such as carbon based and metal organic frameworks materials as well as metal hydrides. In this review the author reviewed the status of the hydrogen storage technologies in solid state, the advantages and disadvantages in each category of materials and the future prospects of hydrogen storage.

  • 전력효율을 높일 수 있는 DC 전송이 주요 관심사가 됨에 따라 전력품질에 대한 기술이 요구된다. DC 그리드의 전력품질을 위해서는 반도체 차단기(Solid-State Circuit Breaker : SSCB)는 필수요소이다. 하지만 기존의 반도체 차단기는 AC 그리드에 기반을 두고 제안되었기 때문에 DC 그리드에 적용하기 어렵다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 DC 그리드에 적용 가능한 SSCB (Solid-State Circuit Breaker : SSCB)을 제안한다. 제안하는 DC SSCB는 사고 전류를 제한하며 사고 지점의 신속한 차단이 가능하다. 제안한 회로는 시뮬레이션을 통해 단락 사고를 모의하여 시스템의 동작 특성을 검증하였다.

  • This paper describes design of the 40-kV, 300-A solid-state pulsed power modulator for environmental applications. The modulator has been modified based on a solid-state pulsed power modulator with 150-A current capacity. To improve the pulsed power modulator, the discharge IGBT was changed. In addition, the gate driver was tuned according to the characteristics of the switch. Finally, experimental results proved the reliability of the modified solid-state pulsed power modulator.

  • Solid waste disposal and management is a critical problem in Nigeria. Annually, a huge quantity of municipal solid waste is generated in Aba. Municipal solid waste disposal in Aba poses severe challenge to environmental safety, public health and welfare of citizens. The situation is made worse by the indiscriminate dumping of refuse at roadsides, streets, waterways and empty lands. The impact of this waste management practice in Aba is environmental deterioration. Efforts to improve waste management in Aba have not recorded significant success. This paper therefore aims to highlight the challenges facing the waste management sector in Aba and proffer solutions on how to improve the sector.

  • The current solid polymer electrolytes suffer from poor conductivity, low mechanical and electrochemical stability toward the lithium electrodes. To improve the performance of solid polymer electrolytes, the addition of nanoparticle fillers to the polymer electrolyte is being extensively investigated. In this paper, a brief review on the state of art of solid fillers for lithium battery electrolytes is presented.
