  • Solid rocket motor that includes AL powder in propellant gets slag during static firing test. Slag is piled up to weak area in motor case and causes dangerous phenomena like explosion of motor. In this paper, It is shown that boots gap liner casting process was developed and static firing test was performed with better results.

  • A typical unsteady internal ballistic analysis model was proposed to take account of the erosive burning for a solid rocket motor. The variance of local velocity and pressure along grain surface are analyzed by using the continuity and momentum equation. The model introduced in this study showed good agreements with the results of previous internal ballistics program. It was investigated that the change of combustion pressure, gas velocity and regrestion rate along the grain axis.

  • Bullet impact tests for two solid rocket motors were performed and its results were compared and analyzed. One was loaded with the existing propellant with decreased weight content of burning rate catalyst and added high density additives to improve mechanical properties and the other was loaded with the existing propellant with decreased weight content of burning rate catalyst to improve its insensitivity as well as to maintain the ballistic performance. The composite cases were used for both motors.

  • In order to calculate the performance of the solid rocket motor, the internal ballistics analysis code using HLLC scheme has been developed. The result of applying the analysis code to the actual motor shape has been compared with the experimental results and it is confirmed that the performance of the solid rocket motor has been well calculated.

  • Movable nozzle with a flexible seal have been used for Thrust Vector Control of the Solid Rocket Motor. The Hydraulic Testing Machine is consisted of Chamber, Actuator, Counterpotentiometer, and evaluates performance of Flexible seal for spring torque and axial compression. The qualification test of Flexible seal was conducted on design condition. A study fix up method of formulation, operation, inspection on Hydraulic testing machine.

To validate the model of concern in the study, both cases of non-erosive and erosive burning were compared with the previous researches with marginal accuracy. It was quantitatively investigated that the combustion pressure, grain length, initial temperature, and vaporization temperature of propellant affect the erosive burning characteristics.

  • Reliability estimation of solid rocket motor is more important to meet the advanced technology and to save the development fund. Domestic reliability requirement of rocket motor has been fulfilled by design capibility. But, reliability estimation process of our own shoud be estabilished by surveying the advanced nation's estimation technology.

  • The basic research on AKM(Apogee Kick Motor) for space launch vehicle was carried out. AKM which will be used as 3rd stage solid rocket motor in 3-stage Korean Sounding Rocket(III) has been developing. KM is a solid rocket motor using composite propellant based on HTPB and is composed of composite motor case and submerged nozzle. To develop KM rocket motor satisfing a given set of requirement, firstly the full-scale KM with diameter 520mm was designed, then sub-scale motors reduced about 60% were manufactured and tested. Full-scale ground firing test is accomplished two times.

Analysis on Thermochemical Erosion Properties for Thermal Insulation Materials of Graphite Nozzle Throat (흑연 노즐목 내열재의 열화학적 침식 특성 분석)

  • In the solid rocket motor (SRM), a thrust of rocket is generated by a nozzle so it is very important device. The nozzle of SRM is a condition of high temperature and high pressure so occurs the erosion by combustion gas. The liquid rocket propulsion systems (LRPSs) cools the nozzle by the fuel and oxidizer but SRM does not cool the nozzle. This paper deal with the development of the oxy-acetylene torch tester and investigate the thermochemical erosion properties for the thermal insulation materials of the graphite rocket nozzle throat through the experiment. The results of experiments are compared with the results of Theoretical model and identify the key factors affecting of erosion. The results is in good agreement with the experimental data.
