  • A solar array simulator (SAS) consists of an engine that generates a setpoint according to panel characteristics, a power stage that provides the actual output, and a controller. Particularly, if the control method is not suitable due to the nonlinearity of the solar panel output curve depending on the irradiation amount and the temperature, and the variation of the curve factor depending on the various panel materials, then the panel simulation function cannot be performed properly. Current and voltage mode controls are usually used for the conventional control method. However, these control methods deteriorate the control performance near the maximum power point; thus, a hybrid control method using two or more controllers has been investigated. In this study, we analyze the hybrid control method using three controllers divided into different areas. The design equation of the controller is derived based on the small signal modeling of each controller, and the simulation performance of the solar array simulator verifies its stability and response speed.

  • This study was trying to focus on achieving high efficiency of multi junction solar cell with thin film silicon solar cells. The proposed thin film Si-Ge/c-Si tandem junction solar cell concept with a combination of low-cost thin-film silicon solar cell technology and high-efficiency c-Si cells in a monolithically stacked configuration. The tandem junction solar cells using amorphous silicon germanium (a-SiGe:H) as an absorption layer of upper sub-cell were simulated through ASA (Advanced Semiconductor Analysis) simulator for acquiring the optimum structure. Graded Ge composition - effect of Eg profiling and inserted buffer layer between absorption layer and doped layer showed the improved current density (Jsc) and conversion efficiency (η). 13.11% conversion efficiency of the tandem junction solar cell was observed, which is a result of showing the possibility of thin film Si-Ge/c-Si tandem junction solar cell.

  • In this paper, electrical power subsystem(EPS) simulator for KOMPSAT 2 has been analyzed designed and simulated by object oriented design(OOP) method. To design EPS simulator, the EPS modules, which modeled solar array, solar array regulator, deployment device controller, battery, power control unit, and EPS control unit, are modeled. To verify the EPS simulator, the modules has been simulated. By OOP designs, the EPS simulator is very powerful because this method is applicable to design other EPS simulator.

  • Recently, In the production line of batteries, charge and discharge tests are essential to verify battery characteristics. In this case, the battery charging uses a unidirectional AC/DC converter capable of output voltage and current control, and the discharge uses a resistive load. Since this method consumes energy during discharge, it must be replaced with a bi-directional AC/DC converter system capable of charging and discharging. Although it is difficult to replace the connected inverter part of the bi-directional AC/DC converter system due to the high cost, the spread of the solar-connected inverter rapidly increases as the current solar supply business is activated, and thereby the solar-connected type Inverter prices are plunging. If it can be used as a power converter for battery discharge without program modification of the solar-powered inverter, it will have competition. In this paper, propose a new battery discharge system using a combination of a photovoltaic DC/DC simulator and photovoltaic PCS using a battery to be used as a power converter for battery discharge without program modification of a low-cost photovoltaic inverter. In addition, propose an optimal solar characteristic curve for the stable operation of PCS. The validity of the proposed system was verified using a 500[W] class solar DC/DC simulator and a solar PCS prototype.

  • This paper proposes the virtual implementation of solar cell(VISC) for photovoltaic system. It is required to make operation condition of solar cell arrays where is the limit of time and space, The main advantage of the simulator is its ability to simulate different types and sizes of arrays considering V-I characteristics of data sheet. The VISC with buch-boost converter can be used to study the short-term and long-term performances of PV cells. The simulator is a far more cost effective and reliable replacement for field and filight testing.

  • In this paper, the implemented photovoltaic array simulator is the power supply based on a common photovoltaic characteristic. This simulator is consisted of a common DC power supply and PC for controlling output. User can select the number of PV modules and solar radiation energy and then can get output whatever user wants. This simulator is a very helpful system to PV generating test and unexpensive than the existing PV simulators.

  • A three-wavelength solar bank is a very important part for a solar simulator with commercial superlux lamps. It is projected metal halide lamps to satisfy following points simultaneously: $\pm$10% of uniformity for irradiance of target area and irradiance in each wave region, and $1,232W/m^2$ of maximum solar irradiance in summer. The developed solar lamp bank has been analyzed numerically by commercial programs in this study to carry out experiments. In conclusion, designed B-type heat lamp is not concentrated in one place than designed A-type heat lamp, it is spreaded widely, and it was proved numerical computation. We suggest that solar simulator is applied to actual experiment test through heat flow numerical analysis in solar lamp bank and the lamp is applied private industry or the military using complex environmental assessment test.

  • Solar array simulator (SAS) is essential equipment in testing and evaluating the power processing performance of a power conditioning system. However, the nonlinearity in the current(I)-voltage(V) characteristic makes the control loop design of SAS a challenging task. Conventionally, only the inner loop is usually considered in the control design approach. However, this study proves that the reference generation loop also interacts with the inner loop and plays a key role in the overall performance of the SAS. In this paper, the performance of voltage-mode control and impedance control, which are two of the most popular architectures for the SAS system, are reviewed and compared by multi-loop analysis.

  • We investigated the effect of light intensity and wavelength of a solar cell device by using photoconductive atomic force microscopy (PC-AFM). The $POCl_3$ diffusion doping process was used to produce a p-n junction solar cell device based on a Poly-Si wafer and the electrical properties of prepared solar cells were measured using a solar cell simulator system. The measured open circuit voltage ($V_{oc}$) is 0.59 V and the short circuit current ($I_{sc}$) is 48.5 mA. Also, the values of the fill factors and efficiencies of the devices are 0.7% and approximately 13.6%, respectively. In addition, PC-AFM, a recent notable method for nano-scale characterization of photovoltaic elements, was used for direct measurements of photoelectric characteristics in local instead of large areas. The effects of changes in the intensity and wavelength of light shining on the element on the photoelectric characteristics were observed. Results obtained through PC-AFM were compared with the electric/optical characteristics data obtained through a solar simulator. The voltage ($V_{PC-AFM}$) at which the current was 0 A in the I-V characteristic curves increased sharply up to 1.8 $mW/cm^2$, peaking and slowly falling as light intensity increased. Here, $V_{PC-AFM}$ at 1.8 $mW/cm^2$ was 0.29 V, which corresponds to 59% of the average $V_{oc}$ value, as measured with the solar simulator. Also, while light wavelength was increased from 300 nm to 1,100 nm, the external quantum efficiency (EQE) and results from PC-AFM showed similar trends at the macro scale, but returned different results in several sections, indicating the need for detailed analysis and improvement in the future.
