In order to excavate underground tunnel most safely such as Han river, the slurry shield TBM method is applied to cope with face of high water pressure for many metro projects. In downtown subway project most of excavated soil is discharged externally whereas in road construction excavated soil is used as filling materials so it becomes important factor for success of the project. After excavated soil, weathered rock and soft rock are discharged with bentonite through discharge pipe to slurry treatment plant then those soils are separated in separation plant according to those size. Fine grained soil has been discarded together with filter cake but it is not toxic and can be mixed with coarse aggregate in proper ratio so this study is performed to find use of qualified filling material to meet quality standard. Therefore, in this study, legal standards and quality standards for the utilization of excavated soil of the slurry shield TBM method were examined and test was conducted to derive recycling way for filter cake and aggregate. And a plan for using it as a filling material for road construction was derived. Because bentonite is a clay composed of montmorillonite, and the excavated soil in the tunnel is also non-toxic, disposal of this material can waste social cost so it is expected to be helpful in the underground space development project that carries out the TBM project by recycling it as a valuable resource.
In this experiment we transformed the Ca-bentonite into Na-bentonite with two inorganic Na-chemicals under different temperatures. These two Na-chemicals were selected among five different Na-chemicals which carries Na as cation. The swelling capacity of the Na chemical-treated bentonite was increased with increasing Na concentration, while the maximum concentration of Na solution decreased with increasing temperature. $Na_2CO_3$ was most effective in exchanging Ca ions and resulting in the highest swelling index among the Na-chemicals. The swelling index was significantly increased with increasing temperature to $100^{\circ}C$. But the equilibration time reversely affected the swelling index due to a rapid increase in evaporation of water. Within same amount of Na treatment SI slightly decreased not only with increasing contacting time but also with increasing temperature. The adsorption for the transformed Na-bentonite was increased with increasing equilibrium concentrations of Pb and Cd ions for all the activated Na-B and indigenous Ca-B and Na-B while the adsorbability of $Pb^{2+}$ onto each Na-B sample is more than that of $Cd^{2+}$. And the maximum adsorption capacity sequence of Na-B samples for Pb and Cd has been found to be 5 % $Na_2CO_3.$ - 5 % $NaHCO_3$ > 3 % $NaHCO_3$ > 3 % $Na_2CO_3$ > 1 % $NaHCO_3$ > 1 % $Na_2CO_3$ > indigenous Na-B > indigenous Ca-B, showing that there are contradictory results about the relationship of cation adsorption to CEC.
We investigated the effects of solution pH on swelling characteristics and relevant hydraulic conductivity of different particle sizes of Na-bentonite which have significantly high swelling capacity. The results showed that the time taken to reach the maximum swelling indexes for all pH levels ranged from 84 hours and 156 hours for pH 6.5 or above by NaOH and pH 3.5 by HCl, respectively. The maximum swelling index slightly increased with increasing particle size, while the maximum swelling indexes were less or approximately half of that of the indigenous Na-bentonite. The changes in swelling indexes before and after solution treatment were distinctive in acidic condition, especially in pH 3.5 by HCl while there were not much differences in alkali condition. For hydraulic conductivities of fully swelled Na-bentonite in a given solution pH, elution did not occur under pressure below 1 bar. But elution started as the pressure was raised to 1.5 bars or above after 500 seconds. The stabilized hydraulic conductivities observed from 1.5, 3.0, and 5.0 bars ranged from $7{\times}10^{-3}cm\;day^{-1}$ to $6{\times}10^{-3}cm\;day^{-1}$, indicating that the hydraulic conductivities were slightly higher in acidic condition than that of normal condition.

In this study, the fly ash was employed as a possible alternative to the bentonite for its high sorption capacity against cationic heavy metal. To consider the constituents of barrier possibly used, the specimens were mixed with different material contents (fly ash : weathered soil : bentonite), then sorption test was performed. Also the specimens were molded on the wet side of optimum moisture contents like mixing ratio of sorption test and their hydraulic conductivities were measured in flexible-wall permeameters. And to confirm the effect of dissolved cations, the hydraulic conductivity tests were repeated by converting the permeant liquids from water to $Cd^{2+}$ solution. Finally, the Cd-concentration at the effluent was analyzed for 500hrs to compare the effectiveness of each specimen in contaminant retardation. Test results showed that the more the ratio of fly ash increase, the more Kd value increase, and the hydraulic conductivity of weathered soil/bentonite (95:5) mixture was the lowest $(2.9*10^{-8}cm/sec)$, and specimens made of fly ash and fly ash/weathered soil mixtures showed similar hydraulic conductivity. Although the permeant liquid was changed from water to $Cd^{2+}$ solution, the hydraulic conductivity of all specimens except for weathered soil maintained similarly like before. Consequently, the initial breakthrough point of Cd in weathered soil specimen was observed at about 5hrs after the test started while that of fly ash specimens was not observed during the whole test period of 500hrs. The results implied that fly ash had a sufficient retardation capacity against contaminant transport possibly by its high sorption capacity although it showed little effect on the reduction of hydraulic conductivity. Based on the test results, it could be concluded that the fly ash can be possibly used as a suitable barrier material in containment system to attenuate the contaminant transport for its high retardation capacity and for the low cost.

Suction of unsaturated bentonite buffers is a very important input parameter for hydro-mechanical performance assessment and design of an engineered barrier system. This study analyzed suction measurement techniques and constitutive models of unsaturated porous media reported in the literature, and suggested suction measurement techniques and constitutive models suitable for bentonite buffer in an HLW repository. The literature review showed the suction of bentonite buffer to be much higher than that of soil, as measured by total suction including matric suction and osmotic suction. The measurement methods (RH-Cell, RH-Cell/Sensor) using a relative humidity sensor were suitable for suction measurement of the bentonite buffer; the RH-Cell /Sensor method was more preferred in consideration of the temperature change due to radioactive decay heat and measurement time. Various water retention models of bentonite buffers have been proposed through experiments, but the van Genuchten model is mainly used as a constitutive model of hydro-mechanical performance assessment of unsaturated buffers. The water characteristic curve of bentonite buffers showed different tendencies according to bentonite type, dry density, temperature, salinity, sample state and hysteresis. Selection of water retention models and determination of model input parameters should consider the effects of these controlling factors so as to improve overall reliability.
This study was conducted to find out definition, specification and characteristics of water-proof method for pond at golf courses that located in the mountain in Korea. Water-proof method of pond was selected by location, kind of soil, area, depth, cost, construction period and so on. 1. Soil Bentonite Sealing Liner(SBL) is to mix soil with a good quality bentonite. Then the mixed material was dressed on the bottom of pond. $\\$Merit of SBL is to purify the water and planting is possible. It can also reduce construction period and is economical. It's easy to find out the leak points. Demerit of SBL is expensive, if good quality soil is not in constructing site. Shape of pond edge is simple. 2. Ethylen Propylene Diene Monomer Sheef(EPDM-Sheet) makes use of sheet that resists to acid and alkaline. EPDM-Sheet spreads out as a mat on the pond for water-proof. Merit of EPDM-Sheet is to perfectly prove water and make a diverse shape of pond edge. Demerit of EPDM-Sheet is not friendly to environment. It needs drain system, air ventilation and long period of construction. It is also difficult to find out leaking points in this method. 3. Water proof of ESS-13 uses ESS-13 that is resin of vegetable matter and friendly to environment. To prove water of pond, ESS-13 is delicate with water in the pond. After that, Ess-13 in the water is expanded at pore space in the soil and cover with soil. ESS-13 can be to prove a leaking pond in golf course under business. ESS-13 is cheap and it needs short construction period. It does not need to switch the old water-proof system, additionally. It needs to move fishes to other place before utilizing ESS-13.
The purpose of this study is to investigate experimentally the optimum mix design and site application case of soil mixing wall (SMW) method which is cost-effective technique for construction of walls for cutoff wall and excavation support as well as for ground improvement before constructing LNG storage tank typed under-ground. Considering native soil condition in site, main materials are selected ordinary portland cement, bentonite as a binder slurry and also it is applied $1,833kg/m^3$ as an unit volume weight of native soil, Variations for soil mixing wall are as followings ; (1) water-cement ratio 4cases (2) mixing velocity (rpm) 3levels (3) bleeding capacity and ratio, compressive strength in laboratory and site application test. As test results, bleeding capacity and ratio are decreased in case of decreasing water-cement ratio and increasing mixing velocity. Required compressive strength (1.5 MPa) considering safety factors in site is satisfied with the range of water-cement ratio 150% below, and test results of core strength are higher than those of specimen strength in the range of 8~23% by actual application of element members including outside and inside in site construction work. Therefore, optimum mix design of soil mixing wall is proposed in the range of unit cement $280kg/m^3$, unit bentonite $10kg/m^3$, water-cement ratio 150% and mixing velocity 90rpm and test results of site application case are satisfied with the required properties.
Slug tests can be adopted to estimate hydraulic conductivity of the slurry trench wall backfill for its abilities to reflect the in-situ performance of the construction. A comprehensive three-dimensional numerical model is developed to simulate the slug test in a slurry trench wall considering the presence of bentonite cake on the interface boundaries between the wall and the surrounding soil formation. Influential factors such as wall width (i.e., proximity of wall boundary), well deviation, vertical position of well intake section, compressibility of wall backfill, etc. are taken into account in the model. A series of simulation results are examined to evaluate the bentonite cake effect in analyzing practical slug test results in the slurry trench wall. The results show that the modified line-fitting method can be used without any correction factor for the slug test in the slurry trench wall with the presence of bentonite cake. A case study is reanalyzed with the assumption of existing bentonite cake. The results are compared with the previously reported results by the approaches assuming no bentonite cake (constant-head boundary) or upper-bound solution (no-flux boundary). The case study demonstrates the bentonite cake effect and the validity of the modified line-fitting method in the estimation of the hydraulic conductivity of the slurry wall backfill.

Removal of phenanthrene by electrokinetic (EK) method combined with Fenton-like process was studied in a model system. Sand and phenanthrene were selected as a model soil and a representative PAH. Sand was contaminated at the concentration of 500 mg phenanthrene/kg dry sand. Bentonite and kaolinite were inserted into the space between reservoir and contaminated soil. When hydrogen peroxide supplied to a soil system from the anode reservoir was transported through the soil by EK process, the Fenton-like reaction was occurred by naturally existing iron minerals in soil. When hydrogen peroxide was supplied into the system, it showed higher removal efficiency than when just water was used. Maximum removal efficiency of phenanthrene was 81.2 % for 7 days.
The characteristics of the experimental compound EK-5439 [3-Chloro-2-[4-chloro-2-fluoro-5-(5-methyl-3-phenyl-4,5-dihydroisoxazol-5-yl-methoxy)-phenyl]-4,5,6,7-tetrahydro-2H-indazole] was investigated to characterize as a new herbicide to use in rice field. The selectivity between rice and barnyardgrass was very good when treated from 0 to 4 days after seeding under soil application. In the overflowing experiment, herbicidal efficacy of EK-5439 was stabilized 12 hrs after application. Vertical migrations in submerged paddy soil of EK-5439 and oxadiazon were equally observed below a soil depth of 1 cm under 5 cm/day leaching condition. Half-lives for herbicidal efficacy of EK-5439 and oxadiazon were 6.1, and 9.6 days, respectively, under submerged paddy condition. EK-5439 showed rapid adsorption to the soil clay, such as bentonite.
