  • The objective of this study is to develop the water quality and aquatic ecosystem model for Andong lake using SWAT-WET (Soil and Water Assessment Tool-Water Ecosystem Tool) and to evaluate the applicability of WET. To quantify the pollutants load flowing into Andong lake, a watershed model of SWAT was constructed for Andong Dam basin (1,584 km2). The calibration results for Dam inflow and water quality loads (SS, T-N, T-P) were analyzed that average R2 was more than 0.76, 0.69, 0.84, and 0.60 respectively. The calibrated SWAT results of streamflow and nutrients concentration was used into WET input data. WET was calibrated and validated for water temperature, dissolved oxygen, and water quality concentration (T-N, T-P) of Andong lake. The WET calibrated results was analyzed that PBIAS was +19%, -13%, +4%, and +26.5% respectively and showed that it was simulated to a significant level compared with the observation data. The observed dry weight (gDW/m2) of zoobenthos was less than 0.5, but the average value of simulation was analyzed to be 0.8, which is because the WET model considers zoobenthos with a broader concept. Although accurate calibration is difficult due to the lack of observed data, SWAT-WET can analyze the effects of environmental change in the upstream watershed on the lake based on long-term simulation based on watershed model. Therefore, the results of this study can be used as basic data for managing the aquatic environment of Andong lake.

  • Geotechnical structures have been analyzed and constructed in various geometry conditions to maintain their stability in accordance with the characteristics of construction design. Shear strengths are generally obtained from triaxial test to apply to design analysis. Geotechnical structures under strip loading, such as earth dam, embankment, and retaining wall, have the strain in a direction, and plane strain condition. Thus, an approximate shear strengths should be applied for stability analysis suitable to ground condition. When applying shear strengths obtained from triaxial tests for slope stability analysis, the evaluation of it may underestimate the factor of safety because the implementation is not suitable for geometry condition. The paper compares shear strengths obtained from triaxial test and plane strain test based on various relative densities using weathered granite soils. Additionally, yield stress is determined by maximum axial strain 15% in triaxial test because of continuous kinematic hardening, but plane strain test can determine a failure point in critical state to evaluate the shear strengths of soils at the second plastic hardening step. This study proposes to perform an appropriate test for many geotechnical problems with plane strain condition.

  • We analyzed the effect of changing water level and turbidity on plants that serve to maintain slope stability on levees. In this experiment, soil collected from upstream of Imha Dam was placed in a water tank and planted with river plants of the Salix species: Salix gracilistyla, S. koreensis, and S. glanduosa. Plant regrowth was analyzed stage-by-stage during a recovery period. In addition, we assessed the tolerance of the plants to concentrated torrential rainfall and examined their recovery rates. The results indicate that in the case of these three Salix species, which are the most prevalent river plants in Korea, stem growth is arrested following serious damage and high turbidity. The possibility of regrowth was very low during the 20-day non-submerged recovery period. Although the number of leaves initially decreased during this period, subsequent regrowth was reasonably high: recovery in S. gracilistyla, S. koreensis, and S. glanduosa was up to 59.3%, 251.3%, and 148.4% respectively, compared with the initial condition.

  • Grouting materials in rock is grouted as vein type along the fault surface by the other way for soil and allow a change of characteristics in rock faults as a result of that. Therefore the deformation characteristics of rock faults after grouting differ as a direction and characteristic of grouted fault and stress condition of field rock. Thereby it must be analyzed the effect for deformation of rock according to characteristics of rock faults and characteristics of grouting materials to accurately evaluate the reinforced effect by grouting. But grouting method used in field until present depends on experience of workers, and inspection for those effects are evaluated by measurement of elastic wave velocity, permeability tests and etc. in field. In this study, it was investigated that the effects for shear characteristics of maximum shear strength, residual shear strength and etc. by comparison and analysis of test results which were worked by direct shear tests of rock faults with changing a type of grouting materials and the grouting depth(t) for average width(a) of fault surface roughness when OPC(Ordinary Portland Cement) and Micro cement was grouted in fault surface of field rock to evaluate characteristicsof the shear deformation for rock fault surface of dam by grouting.

  • This study was carried out to clarify the turbidity change on three stands (Castanea crenata, Pinus densiflora and Plantation Land) by rainfall characteristics in small watershed. The change of turbidity showed in order of plantation land, Castanea stand and Pinus stand. The linear equations models between turbidity and rainfall intensity were able to account for 91% in Castanea stand, 80% in Pinus stand and 71% in plantation land. The linear equations models between turbidity and duration of rainfall were able to account for about 0-1% in three stands. The linear equations models between turbidity and preceding dry days were able to account for about 30% in three stands. The linear equations models between turbidity and accumulative rainfall were able to account for about 6-22% in three stands. The results indicates that soil runoff by land use and development of forest area could be applied to the mitigation measures such as afforestation and erosion check dam for erosion control and water quality management in small watershed.

  • SWAT (Soil and Water Assessment Tool)

  • In this study, the change of the discharge according to the land cover change which acts as one of dominant factors for the outlook of future discharge was analyzed using SWAT(Soil and Water Assessment Tool) model for Yongdam and Daecheong Dam Watershed in the Geum River Basin. The land cover maps generated by Landsat TM satellite images in the past 1990 and 1995 were used as observed data to simulate the land cover in 2000 by CA-Markov serial technique and after they were compared and verified, the changes of land cover in 2050 and 2100 in the future were simulated. The discharge before and after the change of land cover by using input data of SWAT model was compared and analyzed under the A1B scenario. As a result of analyzing the trend in the elapses of year on the land cover in the Geum River Basin, the forest and rice paddy class area steadily decreased while the urban, bare ground and grassland classes increased. As a result of analyzing the change of discharge considering the future change of the land cover, it appeared that the discharge considering the change of land cover increases by 1.83~2.87% on the whole compared to the discharge not considering the change of land cover.

  • In this study, numerical analysis of debris flow was performed using the SPH (Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics) technique to analyze the mechanism of debris flow, and the applicability of soil parameters was verified by comparison with previous studies. In addition, after performing aerial photographic survey using a drone, a topographic model was created based on this survey to check the applicability of the site to the valley part of Jagul Mountain basin. And after numerical analysis of debris flow was performed using NFLOW, and the result was compared and analyzed with the existing satellite image based method. As a result of this study, the numerical analysis method using drone image and NFLOW was found to have a higher applicability to predicting the impact of debris flow, because it can reflect the actual topography better than the existing method based on satellite imagery. Therefore, it is considered that this study can be used as basic data to establish the preventive measures for debris flow such as location selection of the eruption control dam.

  • Approximately 70% of Korea is composed of forest areas. Especially 48% of agricultural field is practiced at highland areas over 400 m in elevation in Kangwon province. Over 90% of highland agricultural farming is located at Kangwon province. Runoff characteristics at the mountainous area such as Kangwon province are largely affected by steep slopes, thus runoff estimation considering field slopes needs to be utilized for accurate estimation of direct runoff. Although many methods for runoff estimation are available, the Soil Conservation Service (SCS), now Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS), Curve Number (CN)-based method is used in this study. The CN values were obtained from many plot-years dataset obtained from mid-west areas of the United States, where most of the areas have less than 5% in slopes. Thus, the CN method is not suitable for accurate runoff estimation where significant areas are over 5% in slopes. Therefore, the CN values were adjusted based on the average slopes (25.8% at Doam-dam watershed) depending on the 5-day Antecedent Moisture Condition (AMC). In this study, the CN-based Long-Term Hydrologic Impact Assessment (L-THIA) direct runoff estimation model used and the Web-based Hydrograph Analysis Tool (WHAT) was used for direct runoff separation from the stream flow data. The $R^2$ value was 0.65 and the Nash-Sutcliffe coefficient value was 0.60 when no slope adjustment was made in CN method. However, the $R^2$ value was 0.69 and the Nash-Sutcliffe value was 0.69 with slope adjustment. As shown in this study, it is strongly recommended the slope adjustment in the CN direct runoff estimation should be made for accurate direct runoff prediction using the CN-based L-THIA model when applied to steep mountainous areas.

  • Borehole investigation which is mainly used to figure out geotechnical characterizations at construction work has the benefit that it provides a clear and convincing geotechnical information. But it has limitations to get the overall information of the construction site because it is performed at point location. In contrast, geophysical measurements like seismic survey has the advantage that the geological stratum information of a large area can be characterized in a continuous cross-section but the result from geophysics survey has wide range of values and is not suitable to determine the geotechnical design values directly. Therefore it is essential to combine borehole data and geophysics data complementally. Accordingly, in this study, a three-dimensional spatial interpolation of the cross-sectional distribution of seismic refraction was performed using digitizing and geostatistical method (krigring). In the process, digital map were used to increase the trustworthiness of method. Using this map, errors of ground height which are broken out in measurement from boring investigation and geophysical measurements can be revised. After that, average seismic velocity are derived by comparing borehole data with geophysical speed distribution data of each soil layer. During this process, outlier analysis is adapted. On the basis of the average seismic velocity, integrated analysis techniques to determine the three-dimensional geological stratum information is established. Finally, this analysis system is applied to dam construction field.
