  • In this study, the pressuremeter test (PMT) and the standard penetration test (SPT) were performed on the lateral pile loading tests site to evaluate the coefficient of subgrade reaction, which is used for load-deformation behavior analysis of laterally loaded piles by elastic subgrade reaction method. As a result, widely used empirical formulas of the coefficient of subgrade reaction by N values of SPT is evaluated conservatively lateral behavior of piles. While the method of directly used PMT results and evaluation method of the coefficient of subgrade reaction considering deformation moduli of soil and a pile diameter that is able to estimate very similar to actual load-deformation behavior of laterally loaded piles in deformation range of 0.5%-1.0% of a pile diameter.

  • Using the case of design to the Large diameter Bored Pile, We showed the various method to estimate the Lateral coefficient of subgrade reaction and analyzed the lateral displacement behavior according to the characteristics of sub layer distribution. According to the study, Mutual relation to the N value and the soil modulus of deformation showed 400N to 800N to the fine grained soil and weathered soil. It showed simular tendancy with the proposed expression of Schmertmann. But Weathered rock was over estimated as 4,200N. $k_h$ to the sedimentory soil and weathered rock each showed these orded of Schmertmann-PMT-2,800N and Schmertmann-2,800N-PMT. As the factor($\alpha$) 4 was applied to the estimation in weathered rock, $k_h$ to the PMT was calculate as a big value. If the pile is long and the pile is surpported to the soil, Lateral displacement was in inverse proportion ratio to the value of $k_h$. But the case of shallow soil layer(early bedrock) and the short pile, Lateral displacement was affected by the behavior of socheted pile to the bedrock not by the upper soil layer.

  • This study proposes a simple method that uses a simple mass-spring model to predict the natural frequency of a soil-pile-structure system in sandy soil. This model includes a pair of matrixes, i.e., a mass matrix and a stiffness matrix. The mass matrix is comprised of the masses of the pile and superstructure, and the stiffness matrix is comprised of the stiffness of the pile and the spring coefficients between the pile and soil. The key issue in the evaluation of the natural frequency of a soil-pile system is the determination of the spring coefficient between the pile and soil. To determine the reasonable spring coefficient, subgrade reaction modulus, nonlinear p-y curves and elastic modulus of the soil were utilized. The location of the spring was also varied with consideration of the infinite depth of the pile. The natural frequencies calculated by using the mass-spring model were compared with those obtained from 1-g shaking table model pile tests. The comparison showed that the calculated natural frequencies match well with the results of the 1-g shaking table tests within the range of computational error when the three springs, whose coefficients were calculated using Reese's(1974) subgrade reaction modulus and Yang's (2009) dynamic p-y backbone curves, were located above the infinite depth of the pile.

  • In this study, the dynamic behavior of a single pile foundation was investigated by using an analytical and numerical studies. The emphasis was given on quantifying a function about the coefficient of dynamic horizontal subgrade reaction from 3D analysis. Based on the numerical analysis, a modified correction factor (α), which is used to obtain the coefficient dynamic horizontal subgrade reaction, was proposed by considering shear wave velocity of soil and confining stress. It was found that the prediction by pseudo-static analysis using the proposed coefficient is in good agreement with the general trends observed by dynamic analysis, and it represents a practical improvement in the prediction of behavior for pile foundations subjected to dynamic loads.

  • Soil stabilization can make the soils becoming more stable by using an admixture to the soil. Lime stabilization enhances the engineering properties of soil, which includes reducing soil plasticity, increasing optimum moisture content, decreasing maximum dry density and improving soil compaction. Silica fume is utilized as a pozzolanic material in the application of soil stabilization. Silica fume was once considered non-environmental friendly. In this paper, the materials required are kaolin grade S300, lime and silica fume. The focus of the study is on the determination of the physical properties of the soils tested and the consolidation of kaolin mixed with 6% silica fume and different percentages (3%, 5%, 7% and 9%) of lime. Consolidation test is carried out on the kaolin and the mixtures of soil-lime-silica fume to investigate the effect of lime stabilization with silica fume additives on the consolidation of the mixtures. Based on the results obtained, all soil samples are indicated as soils with medium plasticity. For mixtures with 0% to 9% of lime with 6% SF, the decrease in the maximum dry density is about 15.9% and the increase in the optimum moisture content is about 23.5%. Decreases in the coefficient of permeability of the mixtures occur if compared to the coefficient of permeability of kaolin soft clay itself reduce the compression index (Cc) more than L-SF soil mix due to pozzolanic reaction between lime and silica fume and the optimum percent of lime-silica fume was found to be (5%+6%) mix. The average coefficient of volume compressibility decreases with increasing the stabilizer content due to pozzolanic reaction happening within the soil which results in changes in the soil matrix. Lime content +6% silica fume mix can reduce the coefficient of consolidation from at 3%L+6%SF, thereafter there is an increase from 9%L+6%SF mix. The optimal percentage of lime silica fume combination is attained at 5.0% lime and 6.0% silica fume in order to improve the shear strength of kaolin soft clay. Microstructural development took place in the stabilized soil due to increase in lime content of tertiary clay stabilized with 7% lime and 4% silica fume together.

  • In this paper, the Coefficient of Subgrade Reaction was analyzed from the data which were the results of lateral pile loading tests and pressuremeter tests on construction sites. The prediction method with N-value was compared with lateral pile loading tests and the results of lateral pile loading tests were compared with the prediction method considering diameter of a pile. Also, the results of lateral pressuremeter tests were compared with those of lateral pile loading tests. As a result, consideration for a diameter and lateral deformation of a pile was needed when the coefficient of horizontal subgrade reaction is presumed. Therefore, a formula which is taking into account the allowable deformation of a pile was suggested from lateral pressuremeter tests in this study.

  • THe purpose of this paper is to suggest the analytical method which can predict lateral nonlinear behavior in non-homogeneous soil using the coefficient of soil resistance and ultimate soil resistance. Those parameters are obtained through back analysis on the base of the results of a series of model tests.Analytical method of Chang is more or less difficult to predict nonlinear behavior in non-homogeneous sol. So, in this study, for the prediction of nonlinear behavior the compositive analytical method which apply the p - y curve to Chang model is suggested. Also, the program is developed to predict nonlinear behavior using the compositive analytical method and it can be used to calculated the deflection, bending moment and soil reaction with DFM in non-homogeneous soil. To establish applicability of the suggested analytical method, the results of model tests and field tests and Pentagon2D finite element program are compared with those of the compositive analytical method. In the analysis values of the coefficient of soil reaction and ultimate soil resistance are also applied to the case of non-homogeneous soil. Lateral defection calculated using the compositive analytical method has been found to be in good agreement with values measured in field and model load tests.

  • Among several methods for determining the allowable lateral resistances of piles, the subgrade reaction method and ultimate lateral resistance method are generally used. To determine the effects of the soil conditions, pile head restraint conditions, and pile lengths on determining the allowable lateral resistances of piles, computations of the allowable lateral resistances of piles using the two methods were executed, and the computation results were compared. For piles in soft cohesive soil, the pile design is governed by the allowable lateral resistance of a pile from subgrade soil reaction method regardless of the pile head restraints conditions and pile lengths. The allowable lateral resistance of a pile from the ultimate lateral resistance governs the design as the undrained shear strength increases. Except for the case of a short pile, which is installed in loose granular soil, the allowable lateral resistance of a pile from ultimate lateral resistance governs the design of laterally loaded piles. According to this study, computation of the ultimate lateral resistance of a pile is needed, even though some opinions suggest that the design of a laterally loaded pile is satisfied only by the subgrade reaction method. The pile width barely influences the coefficient of horizontal subgrade reaction. Realistically, the effect of the pile width can be disregarded in the condition of common pile widths of 20~90cm.

  • Soil aquifer treatment is a water reuse technology that secondary or tertiary treated wastewater is infiltrated into the aquifer in which physical and biochemical reactions occur. Major consideration in SAT is the removal and transport of DOC and nitrogen species. In this study, reaction mechanism in SAT was examined considering nitrification, denitrification and organic oxidation. In addition, SAT modeling system was developed as the reaction mechanism was applied to groundwater flow and transport model. In verification of the reaction module by 1-dimensional unsaturated soil column test, the experimental data of all of the species, ammonium, nitrate, DOC and DO, were well matched with the simulation results. In sensitivity analysis, ammonium partition coefficient, dissolved oxygen inhibition constant and biomass decay rate affect ammonium, DOC and DO concentration of effluent, respectively.

  • Recently, researches for buried lifelines such as pipelines have been carried out to provide for safe design. On of the major causes to the damage of buried pipelines has been soil liquefaction. Analytical models have been presented to compare with the results from recent model experiment under a soil liquefaction environment induced by seismic shaking table. The analytical results were more than two times those those of experimental measurement. Thus the objective of this study is to introduce a rigorous nonlinear analysis of equation of motion with more realistic parameters which are dynamic soil and water pressure, dynamic subgrade reaction coefficient, and damping coefficient for soil liquefaction environment.
