  • Effects of temperature, soil moisture level, flooding, and soil microflora on decay of root galls in club root disease of Chinese cabbage were examined in the laboratory. Number of days required for complete decay of root galls was 3 days at $32^{\circ}C$ or higher, 12 days at $16{\sim}20^{\circ}C$ and 28 days at $8^{\circ}C$. As soil moisture content goes up, root gall decay became faster resulting 3 days for complete decay under saturated moisture condition at high temperature of $32^{\circ}C$, and 8 days under the same moisture level at $24^{\circ}C$. Soil moisture effect was relatively low at $24^{\circ}C$ compared to $32^{\circ}C$. Stimulation of decay by soil flooding was not observed at $32^{\circ}C$ but became apparent at $12^{\circ}C$. Influence of soil microflora on root gall decay was negligiable. Based on these results, temperature appears to be the most important factor affecting root gall decay in soil. Root gall decay is thought to be affected more easily by other environmental factors under low temperature conditions. Maturity of resting spores of Plasmodioprora brassicae in root galls tended to increase as time prolongs during root gall decay. Density of the resting spores was lower in fresh root galls where their maturity was also low as compared to completely decayed root galls. Number of resting spores in completely decayed root gall was $6.5{\times}10^{6}/g$ tissue and its maturity was over 95%.

  • Due to its high salt content and poor physical properties in reclaimed tidal lands, it is important to ameliorate soil physical properties to improve the efficiency of desalination. The objective of this study was to evaluate the changes of soil properties at Saemangeum reclaimed tidal saline soil with various soil amendments. Field experiment was conducted at Saemangeum reclaimed tidal land in Korea and the dominant soil series was Munpo series (coarse loamy, mixed, nonacid, Mesic, Typic, Fluvaquents). Woodchips, crushed-stone, oyster shell, coal bottom ash, and rice hull were added as soil amendments and mixed into surface soil to improve soil physical properties. There was large variability in soil hardness, but oyster shell treatment was significantly lower soil hardness at surface layer. Soil hardness was not significantly different below 15 cm depth. Infiltration rate was also significantly greater at oyster shell treatment. This may be due to the leaching of Ca ions from oyster shell and improved soil properties. However, there was no statistical significant difference of the soil bulk density, moisture content, and porosity. Improved physical properties increased desalinization rate in soil and retarded the resalinization rate when evapotranspiration rate was high. Although soil salinity was significantly decreased with oyster shell amendment, soil pH was increased that should be made up as a soil amendment. Our results indicated that oyster shell application increased infiltration rate and improved soil hardness, and thus oyster shell could be used to improve soil salinity level at Saemangeum reclaimed tidal saline soil.

  • Proctor test A or D method of compaction is the most common laboratory test for investigation of subgrade soil characteristics, however, compression type using roller is used in the field. The differences between laboratory and field compaction have considerable error as application to subgrade soil properties of laboratory test. The investigation of compacted soil is carried into effect to solve the problem. The gyratory compactor which is made to reproduce the field density of asphalt mixture, coming from traffic loads, has an advance to compact it similar to arrangement of field aggregate particles. This gyratory compactor has several problems of investigation of compacted soil, because it has designed to make initial asphalt specimens. The main objectives of this research are grasping problems when compacted soil test using the gyratory compactor and showing solutions. It has made a comparative study of difference of the percentage of water content and weight, which are before and after compaction, about the pressure of compaction, frequency of compaction and speed of compaction. And it also has investigated finding maximum percentage of water content which not occur change of percentage of water content after compaction and searching how has an effect on drawing compaction curve.

  • A coal mine drainage sludge(designated as CMDS) is mainly generated during physicochemical treatment or electrical purification of the drainage abandoned mine that include dissolved heavy metal. To understand the possibility of an application of the dehydrated CMDS as the landfill cover medium of hygienic a reclaimed ground, an laboratory experiment was performed to investigate the physicochemical and geoengineering characteristics of the dehydrated CMDS. To improve the geoengineering characteristics of the dehydrated CMDS, the liquid limit, plasticity limit test, compaction method test, strength test, and hydraulic conductivity test ware performed with the lithification material mixed sludge. When the mixed ratio of the sludge and the lithification material was more than 1:06, the compaction method was A method, the moisture content less than 33.5%, the strength of mixed sludge was $8.2kg\;cm^{-2}$, the hydraulic conductivity was $2.7\times10^{-6}cm\;sec^{-1}$, the sludge was up to the landfill standard of US Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA).

  • The severity of drought in (the) irrigation reservoir could be evaluated by the accumulative rainfall method, soil moisture content method, storage ratio method, and water supply restricted intensity method, etc. The storage ratio method would be the most reliable one for irrigation reservoir. The pattern of drought might be forecast with the most similar pattern of accumulative rainfall and/or storage ratio out of the file of past operation history.

  • This paper demonstrates settling and further consolidation behaviour of dredged clayey soils during landfilling. The effects of initial moisture content, electrolyte type and concentration on settling and consolidation behaviour were examined and evaluated by laboratory column tests. Electrokinetic tests were carried out with modified settling column to compare the soil behaviour under the gravity. From the testing results, the settling velocity increased due to the effects of cations in the electrolyte solution, and electrically induced settlements were found to be greater than those under the gravity.

  • To determine the use of waste materials as root zone soil mixtures for turfgrass culture, the effects of paper mill sludge and briquet ash on physical and chemical properties of soil and growth of turfgrasses were examined. Three turfgrass species of zoysiagrass(Zoysia japonicaSteud.). kentycky bluegrass(Poa pratensis L. 'Ram I') and creeping bentgrass(Agrostis panistris Huds 'Persucross') were cultured in 32cm diameter plastic pots containing various soil mixtures. The basic ingredients used for mixtures included sand(SD), field soil(SL), paper mill sludge(PS), sphagnum peat moss(PM) and briquet ash(BA). Seven combinations using these ingreients were mixed in different percentage by volume as follows: SD+SL+PM(80:10.10), SH+SL+PS(80:10:10), SD-PM(80:20), SD+PS (80:20), SD+BA(80:20), SD+BA+PM(60:20:20) and SD+BA+PS(60:20:20). 1. Paper mill sludge showed pH of 6.6, more than 30% of organic matter content, and higher concentrations of total N, P, k, Ca, Mg and CEC. Bulk density, fild moisture capacity and electrical conductivity of soil mixtures were increased by the comimation of 10~20% PS by volume. 2. Briquet ash showed pH of 8.0, and higher levels of P, k, Ca and Mg than those of field soiks. Bulk density, field moisture capacity and hardenss of soil mixtures were increased but vertical water flow rate and electrical conductivity were decreased by the combination of 20% BA by volume. 3. Phytotoxic effects of PS and BA on growth of turfgrasses were not found. Shoot growth of all three species was higher in soil combination of SD+BA+PS than that of SD+SL+PM added with fertilizer. However, root growth was better in soil mixtures combined with PM. Soil mixtureomposed of 60% SD, 20% BA and 20% PS by volume was most effective on growth of all three species. 4. Paper mill sludge resulted in higher N level in the leaf tissue. The contents of heavy metals such as Cd and Ph did not vary significantly among soil mixtures and species. However, the Mn level was 2~3 times higher in plants growh in mixtures containing PM compared with others, and especially it was higher in creeping bentgrass than other species.

  • Experiments were conducted to investigate the soil freezing depth and pattern with freezing measuring instruments during 1988-l989 winter season in Kangwon province. Freezing measuring instrument was made with acrylic pipes which were consisted of inner and outer parts. Inner pipe was filled with 0.01 % methylene blue solution and rubber hose to protect pipe breakdown by solution freezing. Freezing measurements were carried out by observing discoloration of methylene blue solution. Moisture content of evergreen trees and ground cover plants was also examined in the winter season. The observed results are as follows: 1.In the land of I OOM above sea level, soil freezing depth became deeper as the sum of Accumulated degree-days of temperature below 0˚C(0˚C . day) increased: Soil freezing depth was 30-40cm at l00˚C, 42-43cm at 150˚C, and 47cm at 200˚C day 2.Soil freezing with vinyl mulching was less developed by l3cm at l00˚C with sum of subzero temperature, by l7cm at 200˚C than that of the bare ground. Soil of rich hulls mulching with 4Ocm was not frozen until soil freezing at the bare ground was developed to 25cm depth. 3.Cashmeron mulching was more effective than felt mulching in the heat insulation of soil. 4.Thawing of soil was done from the lowest part of the frozen in the ground to upward in the beginning and after that it was done from the surface of frozen soil to downward. Finally thawing was completed at the middle of frozen soil.
