Investigation on economical method of foundation construction on soft soils in seismic zones: A case study in southern Iran

  • A comprehensive study was conducted to design economical foundations for a number of buildings on soft cohesive soil in the southern coastal regions of Iran. Both static and seismic loads were considered in the design process. Cyclic experiments indicated that the cohesive soil of the area has potential for softening. Consequently, the major challenge in the design stages was relatively high dimensions of settlement, under both static and seismic loadings. Routine soil-improvement methods were too costly for the vast area of the project. After detailed numerical modeling of different scenarios, we concluded that, in following a performance-based design approach and applying a special time schedule of construction, most of the settlement would dissipate during the construction of the buildings. Making the foundation as rigid as possible was another way to prevent any probable differential settlement. Stiff subgrade of stone and lime mortar under the grid foundation and a reinforced concrete slab on the foundation were considered as appropriate to this effect. In favor of an economical design, in case the design earthquake strikes the site, the estimations indicate no collapse of the buildings even if considerable uniform settlements may occur. This is a considerable alternative design to costly soil-improvement methods.

  • To study the trafficability on soft and cohesive benthic terrain, a tracked vehicle model($670mm(L){\times}750mm(B_c)$) is designed and tested. The pitch and chevron angle of grouser, weight and center of gravity of vehicle, and drawbar pull force are chosen as experimental variables. Slip, sinkage and inclined angle of vehicle are picked as performance values. Strength of soil is considered as noise factor. A preliminary straight-line motion test is performed. Then, DOE(Design of Experiment) is discussed for further research.

직교배열표 실험계획법에 의한 심해저 점착성 연약지반용 무한궤도차량의 선회성능에 대한 실험 연구 (An Experimental Study on Steering Performance of Tracked Vehicle on Deep-sea Cohesive Soft Soil by DOE using Orthogonal Arrays)

  • This paper is concerned with experimental investigation of steering performance of a tracked vehicle on extremely soft soil. A tracked vehicle model with principal dimensions of 0.9 m(L)x0.75 m(B)x0.4 m(H) and weight of 167 kg was constructed with a pair of driving chain links, driven by two AC-servo motors. The tracks were configured with detachable grousers with variable span. A deep seabed was simulated by means of a bentonite-water mixture in a soil bin of 6.0 m(L)x3.7 m(B)x0.7 m(H). The turning radii of vehicle and driving torques of motors were measured with respect to experiment variables: steering ratio, driving speed, grouser chevron angle, grouser span, and grouser height. L8 orthogonal table is adopted for DOE (Design of experiment). The effects of experiment variables on steering performance are evaluated.

  • KRISO(Korea Research Institute of Ships & Ocean Engineering) designed and manufactured a pilot mining robot called "MineRo" in 2012. MineRo is composed of four track modules. In general, much time and money are needed for deep-sea tests. Therefore, a numerical analysis to predict the dynamic behaviors has to be performed before a deep-sea test. In the numerical analysis, the information about the mining robot and soil properties are the most important factors to analyze the driving performance and dynamic response of MineRo. A terra-mechanics model of extremely cohesive soft soil is implemented in the form of the relationships between the normal pressure and sinkage, and between the shear stress and shear displacement. It is possible to acquire information about MineRo from the CAD model in the design phase. The Wong model is applied to the terra-mechanics model. This model is necessary to acquire many soil coefficients for a numerical analysis. However, in soil testing, the amount of soil property data obtained is limited. Moreover, it is difficult to analyze all of the cases for the many soil coefficients. In this paper, the dynamic behaviors of MineRo are analyzed according to the driving velocity, steering ratio, and variable extremely cohesive soft soil properties using a table of orthogonal arrays. The dynamic responses of MineRo are the turning radius, sinkage, and slip ratio. The relationships between the dynamic responses and variable soil properties are derived for MineRo.

제지애쉬 고화제로 안정처리된 연약지반의 도로노상토 적용에 관한 연구 (Application of Paper Sludge Ash-Stabilized Soft Ground for Subgrade Soil)

  • 해성점토가 주를 이루고 있는 연안지역에서는 높은 함수비와 많은 세립토 함유로 매립 및 투기도 많은 어려움이 따르고 있고 시공에 있어 성토재의 부족이라는 또 다른 문제에 직면하고 있는 실정이다. 본 연구에서는 제지애쉬 첨가 고화제를 혼합한 현장발생 유용토의 동상특성이나 강도특성을 고려한 배합비를 결정하기 위해 혼합토의 광물학적 분석은 물론 배합비에 따른 강성의 변화를 분석하기 위한 일축압축강도실험을 수행하였다. 또한 현장발생토의 고화처리 효과를 검증하고 노상재로의 활용성을 평가하기 위해 동상시험과 휠트래킹시험을 수행하였다. 그 결과, 제지애쉬 첨가 고화제를 6% 혼합할 경우 전반적으로 흙쌓기 재료의 품질기준을 만족하는 것으로 나타났으며 본 연구 결과가 현장발생토의 활용에 대한 적합한 사용기준으로 활용할 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.

  • This paper is handling about comparative study on dynamic responses of tracked vehicle on soft soil. Two models of tracked vehicle are used in this paper: a single-body model and a multi-body model. Two different methods for dynamic analysis of tracked vehicle are compared: single-body dynamic analysis and multi-body dynamic analysis. Traveling performances of two tracked vehicles are compared.

연약한 준설점토상 매립시 포설된 PET 매트와 지반거동에 관한 연구 (A Study on Interaction Behaviors of Soil-PET Mat installed on Dredged Soils)

  • 토목섬유를 토목공학에 적용한 이후 토목섬유의 손상에 대하여 많은 관심이 되어왔다. 이 논문에서는 시험시공을 3지점에서 수행했는데 목적은 연약한 점토지반상에서 보강재의 거동을 조사하고 매립시 최적의 시공방법론을 찾기위한 것이다. 이 시험시공에 사용된 폴리에스테르매트(인장강도 15톤)의 봉합부분이 원호활동 사면파괴로 인하여 파괴되었는데 이는 급격한 성토로 인해 과잉간극수압이 발생하여 하중이 증가했기 때문이다. 매트의 인장 파열이 진행되는 지반 거동 중 성토고로 유발될 수 있는 간극수압보다 큰 간극수압이 측정되었는데, 특히 지표하 5m 깊이에서는 장기간에 걸쳐 간극수압이 증가하였다. 이러한 결과를 이용하여 성토고와 연약점토의 융기거동의 관계에 대하여 검토하였다.
