Hydrated sodium silicate was synthesized by hydrothermal reaction using anhydrous sodium silicate. The optimum additions of water was 25wt% to make hydrated sodium silicate with homogeneous and purposed water contents. Porous ceramics with homogeneous microstructure and spherical closed pore can be fabricated by elimination of the large pores(a few mm in size) which was formed during first heat treatment through the decomposition of water. Spherical closed pore was formed above $600^{\circ}C$ and the pore size was increased with increasing second heat treatment temperature due to growth of pores. The size of spherical closed pore was varied from 35 to $233\;{\mu}m$ and specific gravity was varied from 0.2 to 1.02 depending on the combinations of the first and second heat treatment temperature.

The non-Newtonian flow curves of sodium bis-(2-ethylhexyl)sulfosuccinate-water lamellar liquid crystals were obtained in various concentrations and temperatures by using a cone-plate rheometer. By applying non-Newtonian flow equation to the flow curves for AOT-water lamellar liquid crystal samples, the rheological parameters were obtained. Particular attention is given to the hysteresis loop detected when the liquid crystal samples are shear under increasing-decreasing shear stress modes which result in thixotropic and dilatant behavior. Sodium bis-(2-ethylhexyl)sulfosuccinate-water lamellar liquid crystals behave as weak gels when they are subjected to shear flow, but when the applied stress surpasses the yield stress, they exhibit non-linear viscoelasticity. Upon decreasing shear rate, the dispersion still preserves much of its structure and consequently its shear stress remains higher than the values measured in the increasing shear rate mode.
We investigated design requirements of feed water drain and hydrogen vent systems for the sodium-water reaction pressure relief system (SWRPRS) of the prototype generation IV sodium cooled fast reactor (PGSFR). We evaluated the areas of the gas vent pipe of the water dump tank and the length of the water drain pipe of the steam generator to rapid drain of the water steam inside the steam generator for the normal and refueling operations, respectively. We also calculated the diameter of the gas vent pipe of the sodium dump tank which met its design pressure.
Giardia lamblia is a parasitic protozoa which is transmitted in the form of a cyst through untreated water and also treated drinking water. Since its presence in water has led to frequent outbreaks of giardiasis and death in many countries, the removal and disinfection of this protozoan cyst from the water supply are of great concern for public health. This study examined the disinfection characteristics of G. lamblia cysts isolated from a Korean patient with giardiasis. When using sodium hypochlorite including 5 or 10 ppm chlorine, the killing rate was initially rapid, however, the disinfection slowed down and a 3log reduction could not be achieved even after 2h. The disinfection effectiveness was also reduced at a lower temperature, thereby implying that the risk o a giardiasis outbreak will be higher in the winter season. A CT (concentration$.$time) curve was constructed based on the results with sodium hypochlorite for use in designing and predicting disinfection performance. The organic chlorination disinfectant SDIS (sodium dichloroisocyanurate) produced a lower pH and a much higher residual effect than sodium hypochlorite. The disinfection of cysts by SDIC continued steadily throughout 2h of contact, although the initial killing rate was lower than that with sodium hypochlorite.
This study evaluated the effect of sodium diacetate and sodium lactate solutions for reducing the cell count of Pseudomonas spp. in frankfurters and hams. A mixture of Pseudomonas aeruginosa (NCCP10338, NCCP10250, and NCCP11229), and Pseudomonas fluorescens (KACC10323 and KACC10326) was inoculated on cooked frankfurters and ham. The inoculated samples were immersed into control (sterile distilled water), sodium diacetate (5 and 10%), sodium lactate (5 and 10%), 5% sodium diacetate + 5% sodium lactate, and 10% sodium diacetate + 10% sodium lactate for 0-10 min. Inoculated frankfurters and ham were also immersed into acidified (pH 3.0) solutions such as acidified sodium diacetate (5 and 10%), and acidified sodium lactate (5 and 10%) in addition to control (acidified distilled water) for 0-10 min. Total aerobic plate counts for Pseudomonas spp. were enumerated on Cetrimide agar. Significant reductions (ca. 2 Log CFU/g) in Pseudomonas spp. cells on frankfurters and ham were observed only for a combination treatment of 10% sodium lactate + 10% sodium diacetate. When the solutions were acidified to pH 3.0, the total reductions of Pseudomonas spp. were 1.5-4.0 Log CFU/g. The order of reduction amounts of Pseudomonas spp. cell counts was 10% sodium lactate > 5% sodium lactate ${\geq}$ 10% sodium diacetate > 5% sodium diacetate > control for frankfurters, and 10% sodium lactate > 5% sodium lactate > 10% sodium diacetate > 5% sodium diacetate > control for ham. The results suggest that using acidified food additive antimicrobials, as dipping solutions, should be useful in reducing Pseudomonas spp. on frankfurters and ham.
KAERI has developed a KALIMER-600 which is a pool-type sodium-cooled fast reactor with a 600MWe electric generation capacity. For a SFR development, one of the main topics is an enhancement of the reactor system safety. Therefore, we have a long-term plan to design the large sodium experimental facility to evaluate the reactor safety and component performance. In order to extrapolate a thermal hydraulic phenomena in a large sodium reactor, the thermal hydraulics phenomena is under investigation in a 1/$10^{th}$ water-simulant facility for the KALIMER-600. In this paper, we shortly described the experimental facility setup and the measurement of the isothermal global flow behavior. For the flow field measurement, the PIV method was used in a transparent Plexiglas reactor vessel model at around $20^{\circ}C$ water condition.
Various catalysts such as formic acid, acetic acid, sodium hydroxide, sodium bicarbonate, carbon dioxide and nitrogen gas were used for hydrolyzates production from deoiled mackerel muscle by subcritical water hydrolysis. Above 99% hydrolysis yield was obtained using sodium bicarbonate catalyst at $260^{\circ}C/70bar$. Histamine and heavy metals concentration were reduced in hydrolyzates. Highest amount of amino acid (400.36 mg/g) and reducing sugar (24.75 mg/g) were found in hydrolyzate obtained at $260^{\circ}C/70bar$ and $220^{\circ}C/30bar$, respectively with sodium bicarbonate catalyst. Antioxidant and ACE-inhibitory activities were significantly higher in hydrolyzates obtained using sodium bicarbonate than that of others.

The Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) studied the sodium-water reaction (SWR) minimized steam generator for the safety of the sodium-cooled fast reactor (SFR), and selected the copper bonded steam generator (CBSG) as the optimal concept. This paper introduces the conceptual design of the CBSG and the development of the CBSG sizing analyzer (CBSGSA). The CBSG consists of multiple heat transfer modules with a crossflow heat transfer configuration where sodium flows horizontally and water flows vertically. The heat transfer modules are stacked along a vertical direction to achieve the targeted large heat transfer capacity. The CBSGSA code was developed for the thermal-hydraulic analysis of the CBSG in a multi-pass crossflow heat transfer configuration. Finally, we conducted a preliminary sizing and rating analysis of the CBSG for the trans-uranium (TRU) core system using the CBSGSA code proposed by KAERI.

The influences of sodium chloride, polyethylene glycol 4000 and 20000 on 5-fluorouracil release from disk type silicone polymer devices were examined in isotonic phosphate buffer. These water soluble cosolvent and sodium chloride caused devices to swell in aqueous media. Sodium chloride exerted the greatest influence on drug release. The addition of water soluble cosolvent or sodium chloride to silicone polymeric devices permitted controlled release of 5-fluorouracil, presumably due to the change of the physical microstructure of silicone network, and the solubility and diffusivity of 5-fluorouracil. It seemed that the water soluble drug was released through the hydrophilic pores or pathways formed in the device by the incorporation of a water soluble cosolvent or sodium chloride.
The complex coupling relationship between liquid sodium and concrete materials affects both the sodium fire characteristics and concrete properties through heat and chemical erosion. In this study, experiments on direct and indirect (separated by a steel plate) contact of the columnar sodium fire with the concrete surface were performed. It was found that the combustion efficiency of liquid sodium in direct contact with concrete was significantly enhanced and accompanied by intermittent explosions and splashing of small concrete fragments. The sodium fire on the surface of the concrete considerably increased the internal temperature, pore size, and distribution density of the concrete. In addition, the depth of influence on the loosening of the concrete structure was also greatly extended. The contact of liquid sodium with the concrete substantially affected its permeability resistance. The water absorption of the concrete surface was increased by more than 70% when liquid sodium directly impacted the bare concrete surface. However, the change in water absorption in the centre of the concrete was primarily affected by the duration of the external heat.
