  • Hemangioma and vascular malformation is a common vascular benign lesion in the head and neck region. The lesion is a congenital malformation observed in neonates. The treatment this lesion includes surgical excision, cryotherapy, selective embolization and treatment with sclerotic agents. We present three cases of benign oral vascular lesions treated with an intralesional injection of sodium tetradecyl sulfate. The lesions virtually disappeared after three sessions of sclerotherapy, leaving an inconspicuous scar. No side effects were observed. Sclerotherapy with sodium tetradecyl sulfate is effective in treating benign oral vascular lesions, and the use of the sodium tetradecyl sulfate provides alternative or support for surgical methods.

  • Background: Hemangioma and vascular malformation are benign vascular lesions that often occur in cephalic and cervical region. Currently, surgical resection, laser therapy, angiographic embolization, use of steroids, and sclerotherapy are used as treatments. Case presentation: This study reports three cases of benign vascular lesions that are remarkably treated by sodium tetradecyl sulfate (STS) injection, of which occurred in oral cavity and around the mouth. Three percent of STS was diluted with 0.9 % of normal saline, and it was injected to the lesion site at least once. The result of treatment was evaluated based on clinical findings. Conclusion: Surgical treatment of hemangioma and vascular malformation occurred in oral cavity is not normally used because of esthetic issues and potential hemorrhage. On the other hand, sclerotherapy using STS is an effective therapy compare to surgical treatment. Despite the number of STS injection was different for each patient, all three patients had reached satisfactory level through the treatment with gradual diminution of lesions.

  • The change of interactions of anionic surfactants, sodium dodecyl sulfate(SDS) and sodium tetradecyl sulfate(575) in the presence of electrolytes, to the chitosan-based polyelectrolyte(sol'n and gel phase) were studied. The chitosan gel used in this study were crosslinked with epichlorohydrin(ECH). Binding isotherms were determined by potentiometric technique using a surfactant ion selective solid-state electrode and the results were represented by using the sequence generating function(SGF) method. The results of binding isotherm were shown comparatively high cooperativity. The addition of electrolytes in the chitosan/SDS system resulted in a shift of the binding to higher free surfactant concentration because of screen effect by the electrolytes. Degree of binding of chitosan gel was higher than that of chitosan sol'n. And also a conformational phase transition of the chitosan gel in the presence of electrolytes has been investigated.

  • Vascular malformations are the most common congenital and neonatal vascular anomalies in the head and neck region. The demand for simple and esthetic vascular malformation treatments have increased more recently. In this study, two patients that were diagnosed with venous malformations were treated with sodium tetradecyl sulfate as a sclerosing agent. Recurrence was not found one year after the surgery. This article gives a brief case report of sclerotherapy as an effective approach to treat vascular malformations in the oral cavity.

  • Cationic gemini-surfactant, namely 1,4-butane-bis(N-alkanoyloxyethyl-N,Ndimethyl)-diammonium bromide was synthesized and their inhibition effect on corrosion of mild steel in 1 M HCl solution was tested by weight loss method. The synthesized product was confirmed by FT-IR and $^1H-NMR$ spectroscopy. Surface tensions were measured by surface tensiometer Sigma 70. Their c.m.c. values evaluated by surface tension method was $4.1{\times}10^{-5}{\sim}5.4{\times}10^{-5}$ mol/L. The Krafft point of the these surfactants were <0~$10.7^{\circ}C$. The emulsifying properties of synthesized cationic gemini surfactants and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), tetradecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (TTAB) was investigated. Of these, 1,4-butane-bis(N-lauroyloxyethyl-N,N-dimethyl)- diammonium bromide, CGL 14-4-14 has been confirmed as a good emulsifier. The inhibition efficiency increases by increasing cationic gemini surfactant concentration. As a result, these surfactants are expected to be applied as corrosion inhibitors.

  • Background: Although sclerotherapy is an established procedure in treating varicose veins, a wide disparity remains in the rates of success. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness and complications of sclerotherapy in combination with compression. Material and Method: From December 2000 to September 2001, a combined total of 50 legs in 39 patients with primary varicose veins were treated with sodium tetradecyl sulfate as sclerosant with the empty vein technique. Immediately after the injection, local compression was increased by a cotton wool roll, and additional compression was obtained with class II medical compression hosiery. Patients were evaluated at 5 days, 1 week, 2 weeks, and 6 weeks for degree of improvement and complications. Result: There were 36 women and 3 men ranging in age from 26 to 66 years, with a mean age of 45.3 years. Good sclerosing results were obtained in all patients. Of fifty legs, five had minor complications, two small intravascular clots, two pigmentations, and one compression-related bulla, which needed no treatment. Conclusion: The use of a cotton wool roll for local compression is highly effective, and sclerotherapy in combination with compression is safe and effective in the treatment of varicose veins.

  • A cationic ester type surfactant, namely N-2-hydroxy-3-(2-hydroxyacetoxy) proply-N,N-dimethyldodecylaminium chloride(HPDA) was synthesized and confirmed by FT-IR and $^1H$-NMR spectroscopy. Surface tensions on the diluted aqueous solutions of the synthetic compounds were measured and evaluated critical micelle concentration. Surface tension was 33~34 dyne/cm in the range of $10^{-3}{\sim}10^{-2}mol/L$ and critical micelle concentration(c.m.c) value was $8.5{\times}10^{-3}mol/L$ by surface tension method. Emulsifying properties of the synthetic surfactant(HPDA) and Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), tetradecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (TTAB) was tested. As a results, synthetic glycolic acid ester type compounds(HPDA) has been confirmed as a good emulsifier. The foaming power and stability of synthesized ester type surfactant was measured by Ross-Miles method.
