Relevance has a long history of scholarly investigation and discussion in information science. One of its notable concepts is that of 'user-based' relevance. The purpose of this study is to examine how users construct their perspective on the concept of relevance; to analyze what the constituent elements (facets) of relevance are, in terms of core-periphery status; and to compare the difference of constructions of two groups of users (information users vs. information professionals) as applied with a social representations theory perspective. Data were collected from 244 information users and 123 information professionals through use of a free word association method. Three methods were employed to analyze data: (1) content analysis was used to elicit 26 categories (facets) of the concept of relevance; (2) structural analysis of social representations was used to determine the core-periphery status of those facets in terms of coreness, sum of similarity, and weighted frequency; and, (3) maximum tree analysis was used to present and compare the differences between the two groups. Elicited categories in this study overlap with the ones from previous relevance studies, while the findings of a core-periphery analysis show that Topicality, User-needs, Reliability/Credibility, and Importance are configured as core concepts for the information user group, while Topicality, User-needs, Reliability/Credibility, and Currency are core concepts for the information professional group. Differences between the social representations of relevance revealed that Topicality was similar to User-needs and to Importance. Author is closely related to Title while Reliability/Credibility is linked with Currency. Easiness/Clarity is similar to Accuracy. Overall, information users and professionals function with a similar social collective of shared meanings for the concept of relevance. The overall findings identify the core and periphery concepts of relevance and their relationships in terms of coreness, similarity, and weighted frequency.
It is important to identify and discuss what the most vial contributions of criminological theories. In the field of criminology, most significant contributions or advancement have been made on the various issues such as age, the integration of structural and procedural level theories, other theoretical integration debates. However, it is hard to find ant systematic study exploring such a contribution in criminological theories. This study, therefore, has a purpose to discuss three most significant contributions to our theoretical understanding of criminal behavior made since 1985. To accomplish the study purpose, this study choose the followed three theoretical contributions; the emergence of life course theory, the revision of social disorganization theory, and the introduction of social structure and social Learning (SSSL) model. The three theoretical works will be introduced and discussed regarding other theoretical integration trends in the body of this study. The conclusion, contribution of this current study has been discussed in the last conclusion and discussion section.
This study discusses the theoretical analysis of the concept of social memory and participatory digital archives, and argues the various problems of participatory digital archives based on the analysis of individual experiences and perceptions through interviews with stakeholders including users and operators. As a theoretical study, it analyzes related precedent studies and explores the complementary concepts of social memory and participatory digital archives. Based on the discussion, the study understands social memory as a defined and generated memory through the interaction of the social environment encompassing politics, socio-culture and the internal relations of the community. Furthermore, it understands the participatory digital archive as a digital space in which the community, the voluntary participation of users, and the support of professional groups intertwine. The memories and records of this interaction are then stored, preserved, shared, spread, and reproduced. Through stakeholder interviews, the study analyzes the perceptions of users and operators regarding participation, policy, and service, and identified the various problems with participatory digital archives.
This paper attempts to analyze the trend of research methods in Korean social welfare research and discuss utilities of qualitative research methods in broadening and deepening social welfare knowledge body in Korea. First, this paper examines research methods of 538 research articles published in Korean Journal of Social Welfare from the volume one in 1979 to the volume 51 in 2002. It has the following results: (1) non-empirical research articles were dominant in the 1980s; (2) empirical research articles have been dominant since the middle of the 1990s; and (3) research articles utilizing qualitative methods have appeared rarely since the end of the 1990s. Second, this paper examines the characteristics and the types(phenomenology, grounded theory, ethno-graphic approach, narrative inquiry etc.) of qualitative research methods. Third, this paper discusses (1) fitness between practice in social welfare discipline and qualitative research methods and (2) utilities of qualitative research methods in broadening and deepening knowledge body of Korean social welfare. In discussing the fitness, this paper focuses that qualitative research methods fits with the needs of social welfare discipline regarding broadening and deepening our understandings about social phenomena related to practice, and (2) qualitative research methods fits the needs of social welfare discipline regarding developing endogenous knowledge. In discussing the utilities, this paper focuses that qualitative research methods can be more properly utilized for social welfare research because there are coincidences in basic assumptions and perspectives of both qualitative research methods and social welfare practice. Finally, this paper highlights that 'many ways of knowing' exist in social science and it should be considered more sincerely in the arena of Korean social welfare research in order to more solidly develop the knowledge body of social welfare and practice in Korea.
This article attempts to restructurize the current arguments on how to change the method of financing child care programme, which is currently under discussion in Korea. There has been a series of changes in Korean child care policy, such as the amendment of Child Care Act, the transition of its responsible administrations, adoption the child care policy as a national agenda. In these changes, new needs for child care financing method comes out with a new direction of child care policy and a plan of expansion of finances. That's the transition from 'facility-centered subsidy' to 'child-centered subsidy'. This article redefine it as the arguments about 'supply-side subsidy' vs. 'demand-side subsidy'. To analyse the different traits of two branches of arguments, this article reviews the social welfare models, and has come to the conclusion that the Burchardt's model is appropriate to explain the financing debates. Thus, the analysis the traits of the two perspectives is based on three dimensions i. e. service provision, financing and decision making according to the Burchardt's model. This also examines how the two sides is connected to the discussion of publicity and quality improvement of child care service. Through this approaches and analysis, this helps us restructurize the debates on the method of financing from the present superficial arguments.

There is a need to look into what methods this should be used for. The purpose of this study is to explore the meaning of democratic citizenship education revealed in the 2022 revised curriculum. The contents of democratic citizenship education for the cultivation of citizenship revealed in the general discussion of the 2022 revised curriculum are analyzed as follows. First, it means education related to democracy and social issues. The specific contents of democracy and social issues are ① peace, ② human rights, ③ gender equality, and ④ cultural diversity. Second, critical thinking education. Third, media literacy education is necessary because democratic citizenship education must respond appropriately to the times in line with social changes such as the emergence of Chat GPT. Fourth, while emphasizing democratic decision-making education, it includes social empathy and communication education. Fifth, it contains local and national community participation and practical education as a method for citizen participation and practice. This study aimed to examine the social transition, which is often metaphorized as the Fourth Industrial Revolution, within the context of social work practice and to explore measures to improve social work practice in such transition. Four social welfare researchers held seven discussions to predict the social changes in the near future centered on the Fourth Industrial Revolution and find the corresponding development strategies in social work practice; collective autobiography method was used to analyze the discussion. The analysis ascertained hyper connectivity, the advent and expansion of new communities, diversification and individualization, and the emergence of new criteria for the assessment of one's quality of life as the distinctive qualities of the near future. It was analyzed that humans and organic materials will be interconnected through spatial and temporal transcendence and that humans liberated from labor will seek for diverse communities while the number of atomized individual will increase simultaneously. Furthermore, the rise of new order of life accompanied by both the expansion of diversification and individualization and the ecological worldview brought forth by post materialistic trend was predicted. Meanwhile, the disengagement from macroscopic context, a biased inclination towards technique orientated professionalism, and individualistic social work practices without integrity were identified as the limitations of the current social work practice. This study presented three goals for social work practice to help it overcome its current shortcomings and correspond to the social changes: first, the rearrangement of practice knowledge, technique, and value so that it is based on humans and society, which are the essence of social practice work; second, the practice, such as sharing economy, that expands the individuals' boundaries of life to the community; three, the restoration of the desirability of professional social works by examining its special nature.
Since the 2000s, Korean society has been transitioning into a multicultural society with a sharp increase in the influx of various non-Koreans including immigrant workers, immigrant spouses, international students, and refugees. As a result, Korea, which had maintained religious peace and coexistence as a multi-religious society, is showing signs of increased risks of social problems such as the surfacing of conflicts between religions. Religion can contribute to the integration and safety of communities in the process of becoming a multicultural society, but at the same time, it requires discussion from an educational perspective because of its ambivalence in potentially causing conflict within communities. Considering that one of the main functions of religion is social integration, religious education is required for the stable settlement of multicultural societies. In recognition of this, discussion regarding a new perspective on religious education is needed to respond to religious diversity and to understand the current society and the means of becoming a global citizen. This new discussion would be a 'general religious education' model that provides an education covering various religious and non-religious worldviews in order to cultivate 'religious literacy.' However, in a multicultural society, while general religious education may be useful in reducing prejudice and discrimination among students in an integrated environment, it should also be recognized that a 'special religious education' would be needed to acknowledge the unique values of each human group. This would be the most effective approach to multiculturalism. Therefore, this study proposes a form of 'cooperative religious education,' which combines general religious education and special religious education as a direction for religious education. In providing readers with background context, this study will review Korean religious policies and religious education, and then present realistic methods that can be implemented in schools.
This study aims to identify effects of welfare-to-work programs that helped welfare recipients promote emotional and social self-sufficiency, focused on social adaptation program for the hardest-to-employ poor with psychological and social work barriers. This study relied on data from mandatory social adaptation program participants among community self-sufficiency organizations in nationwide from December 2010 to January 2011 in South Korea. Hierarchical regression was used to analyze for this study. As a result, among participants, there were slightly than moderate level on emotional and social self-Sufficiency effects. The satisfaction of education program had positive effect both emotional and social self-sufficiency whereas that of health service only had positive effect on social self-sufficiency. Also, these emotional and social self-sufficiency effects differed between the number of needy family in household, type of organization and degree of satisfaction of life. This study suggests that discussion of implications for the development of welfare-to-work program and intervention that target psychological, emotional and social needs for recipients with work barriers.
As smart phones, tablets, and other digital devices become more pervasive, theoretical arguments around digital divide, which has previously focused on "access," is now expanding to effectively "utilize," actively "produce" and "share" information. Such discussion is significant because the impact on inter-personal and social networks depends on how digital divides are used, which can then recreate or exacerbate social inequality structures. This study examines the effect of individual's social relations and two types of social capital (i.e., bonding and bridging) on economic and socio-participatory usage of digital devices. An empirical analysis of dataset from 740 surveys reveals that the more horizontal the social relations of the individual, the more both bonding and bridging social capital increase. However, rather than the social relationship of the individual directly influencing the two types of digital device usage, it has an indirect effect on both economic and socio-participatory usage of digital devices. In particular, mediating effects of both bonding and bridging social capital exist in the case of economic usage of digital devices, whereas bonding social capital only has mediating effects on economic usage of digital devices. We discuss the role of social capital on digital devices usage and present the theoretical and practical implications.
