This study investigated developmental pathways mediating effects of child abuse on peer rejection. Participants were 904 poor children aged 10-15 from 16 nationwide cities/provinces who receive financial sponsorship from Childfund in cooperation with the Ministry for Health, Welfare and Family Affairs. Structural equation modeling was employed for statistical analyses. Results showed that child abuse was directly associated with heightened risk of rejection by peers; the relationship was indirectly mediated by aggression and cognitive ability. The hypothesized partially mediated model had a better model fit than the fully mediated model. Aggression and low cognitive ability, significant effects of abuse, were associated with peer rejection. Social withdrawal, also associated with child abuse, did not account for the association between abuse and peer rejection.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of children's individual characteristic on peer acceptance. The subjects were 234 6th grade elementary school children in Kwangju, Korea. The Questionnaires were used to collect the data on peer acceptance and social behavioral trait, physical attractiveness, demographic variables and the school achievement grade assessed by their teachers. The results were as follows : 1. Peer acceptance score, school achievement grade, prosocial behavior score, appearance score and physical attractiveness tend to be above the median scores. Aggression behavior score and withdrawal score tend to below the median scores. 2. The effect of individual characteristic variables on the peer acceptance found all significantly. 3. The influence of prosocial behavior, physical attractiveness, withdrawal behavior, aggressive behavior and school achievement grade on peer acceptance were found significantly. Prosocial behavior was the most influential variable on peer acceptance.
This study was designed to analysis a causal modeling between peer acceptance of children and the related variables. The subjects were 430 5th and 6th elemantary school children. Using questionnares data on peer acceptance aggression & withdrawal behavior rated by same-sex peers and mother-child attachment were gathered,. For the statiscal analyses multiple regression and path-analysis were used. The results show social behavior that effects peer acceptance is influenced by not only aggresive behavior but also withdrawal behavior, Peer acceptance was not affected directly by mother-child attachment and paternal education while academic achievement affected peer acceptance indirectly. Therefore children's peer acceptance is mainly determined by social behavior as well as academic achievement.
This study was based on the 'Escape Theory' model suggested by Baumeister(1990). Based on this analysis framework, this study attempted to examine that complicated direct and indirect effect of school risk factors(risk of academic scores, risk of relation with teacher and risk of peer relation) on suicide ideation in adolescence, through negative self-esteem, depression and withdrawal coping. To this end, this study used the data from the '2008 Gyeongsangbuk-Do youth crisis survey' conducted by the Youth service center in province of Gyeongsangbuk-Do. The target number of this study was 2,335 students in the age group of middle school and high school. The result of the Analysis indicate that risk of relation with teacher among school risk factors was only one which affected directly and indirectly on suicide ideation. The other side, risk of academic scores and risk of peer relation had indirect effects, via negative self-esteem, depression and withdrawal coping. In conclusion, this study confirmed that school risk factors had effects on suicide ideation directly or indirectly, they were complicatedly connected, through negative self-esteem, depression and withdrawal coping. Therefore, Prevention program for adolescence' suicide ideation or suicide risk require integrated strategies and tactics.
This study is objected to identify the influencing factors of adolescents' smartphone dependency and to determine the degree of influence on smartphone dependency through direct and indirect channels acting between factors. The data of the 2th Korean Child-Youth Panel Survey(KCYPS 2018) was analyzed using the SPSS 26.0 and 26.0 AMOS program. Six paths proved to statistically significant. Self-esteem and depression were the influencing factors of adolescents' smartphone dependency. Social withdrawal and the school environment influenced smartphone dependency through self-esteem and depression as mediators. Self-esteem and depression acted as mediating factors. Adolescents' smartphone dependency was influenced not only by personal factors but also by external factors such as the school environment. The results of this study will be presented as evidence for developing programs that can prevent adolescents from smartphone dependency.
The purpose of this study is to identify various factors related to depression in adolescents. In this study, a multiple regression analysis was conducted to investigate the factors affecting depression in 1,881 1st grade students in middle school, using the 2016 Panel Investigation for Children and Adolescents of Korea. The attention problems, aggression, physical symptoms, and social withdrawal perceived by adolescents had significant effects on the depression. Out of them, the physical symptoms had the greatest effects on the depression. When the attention problems, aggression, physical symptoms, and social withdrawal of adolescents were higher, the symptoms of depression were increased, which explained 54.1% of adolescents' depression. Such results of this study could be helpful for the educational support and practical intervention for the enhancement of mental health of adolescents.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to describe health problems and psychosocial adaptation in children with cancer and to determine the relationship between these two variables. Method: The data were collected from parents of 61 children with cancer, aged 4-11 years at one university hospital in Seoul. The instruments for this study were the Korea Child Behavior Check List (KCBCL) and a physical symptom checklist developed by the researchers. Result: The major health problems were coughing, sleeping disturbances, fatigue and weakness. The total behavior problem score for children in the cancer group was higher than the score for those in the norm group. The scores on the scales for withdrawal, somatic complaints, social immaturity, and internalizing problems were higher in the children with cancer compared to normative findings. Scores on social and school competence in the cancer group were lower than the norms for healthy children. The relationship between health problems and psychosocial adaptation was significant in the subscales of withdrawal, anxiety/depression, internalizing problems and social involvement in the off therapy group. Conclusions: This study shows the various areas that need further study in caring for children with cancer.
Social workers experience various work commitment forms in the field practice. This study tries to find the discriminant validity of job, organizational, career, and relationship commitments among these work commitment forms. This study also tries to find the interrelationship among these commitment forms and the relationship of each of four commitment forms with the withdrawal intention, which is represented by turnover intention and career change intention. For this purpose, a survey of 417 social workers working for community welfare centers in Busan and Gyeongnam was conducted and the data was analyzed. The results of this study showed that the work commitment forms have discriminant validity. The analysis of interrelationship between commitment forms using SEM revealed that the more a social worker commits to his or her job, the more he/she commits to his/her job and the relationship with the client. In addition, job and organizational and career commitments affect turnover intention while career and relationship commitments affect career change intention. Therefore, to improve organizational management, it is necessary to understand diverse forms of work commitment as well as organizational commitment. And differentiated management strategies are needed to increase either each commitment form or various commitment forms at the same time.
The purpose of this study was to investigate which variables predicted preschoolers' pro-social behavior. Subjects consisted of 250 preschooler-mother pairs; children were 3 to 6 years of age Children's emotional intelligence and pro-social behavior were assessed by classroom teachers. Data on the mothers' socialization beliefs and strategies as well as children's temperament were gathered through maternal self-reported questionnaires. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, t-tests, correlation and regression analyses. Results showed that children's temperament (withdrawal predisposition) and emotional intelligence (self emotional expression) predicted children's pro-social behavior. Mothers' perceptions of the importance of pro-social behavior correlated negatively with children's pro-social behavior.
Social skills and behavior problems of 90 4- and 5-year-old children were analyzed by children's negative emotionality(sadness, anger, and fear). The instrument for measurement of social skills(cooperation, self-control, assertion, and responsibility) was the Preschool Level of the Korean Version of the Social Skills Rating System(Suh, Mee-Ock, 2004). Measures of behavior problems included internalizing(anxiety, immaturity, withdrawal, physical symptoms) and externalizing(hyperactivity, aggression) problems. Results showed that girls were higher in negative emotionality(sadness) than boys, and 5-year-olds were higher in social skills than 4-year-olds. Children with lower levels of negative emotionality were higher in social skills and lower in behavior problems than children with higher levels of negative emotionality.
