While depressives tend to be preoccupied with their own grief and the negative aspects, they might lack the capacity to interact with outside world. With the intention to determine whether depressives might have certain characteristics regarding empathic behavior, as behavior is highly based on responsiveness to others, we examined the relationship between emotional empathy and depression. In addition, we examined the mediating effect of self-criticism on the relationship between emotional empathy and depression. Data was collected from 146 online university students and analyzed using the correlation and multiple regression model. Results showed that perspective taking, which is the cognitive aspect of empathy, was negatively correlated with depression. Concerning the emotional aspects of empathy, both empathic responding and empathic concern were negatively correlated with depression, while personal distress was positively correlated with depression. Regression results, which set the empathy related variables as predicting variables, found perspective taking decreased depression, and personal distress enhanced depression. In addition, personal distress showed significant enhancing effect on depression and was completely mediated by self-criticism. With the result, implications and limitations of this study were discussed.
In this paper, we propose a highly precise vehicle detection method with low false alarm using billboard sweep stereo matching and multi-stage hypothesis generation. First, we capture stereo images from cameras established in front of the vehicle and obtain the disparity map in which the regions of ground plane or background are removed using billboard sweep stereo matching algorithm. And then, we perform the vehicle detection and tracking on the labeled disparity map. The vehicle detection and tracking consists of three steps. In the learning step, the SVM(support vector machine) classifier is obtained using the features extracted from the gabor filter. The second step is the vehicle detection which performs the sobel edge detection in the image of the left camera and extracts candidates of the vehicle using edge image and billboard sweep stereo disparity map. The final step is the vehicle tracking using template matching in the next frame. Removal process of the tracking regions improves the system performance in the candidate region of the vehicle on the succeeding frames.

The aim of this study was to identify the interrelationship among the motives for selecting a teaching profession, job satisfaction, and the burnout of preschool teachers. In particular, this study examined the mediating effect of job satisfaction on the relationship between their motives and burnout. Data were collected from a group of 200 kindergarten and daycare center teachers working in Seoul, Choongnam and Kyeonggi Provinces. Data analysis was conducted using the PASW Statistics 18.0. The results are as follows. First, there were correlations among their motives for occupational choice, job satisfaction, and burnout. Their motives for selecting a teaching profession and job satisfaction had an influence on their burnout. Second, job satisfaction had a mediating effect on the relationship between motives for selecting a teaching profession and burnout of preschool teachers. These results suggest that improvements of their job satisfaction would help alleviate their burnout and mediate the influence of motives for selecting a teaching profession.

This study was conducted to investigate the mediating effects of coping on the impact of life stress on depression, subjective well-being and psychological well-being in nursing students. Self-report questionnaires were used to collect data from 147 nursing students. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation coefficient and hierarchical multiple regression. Nursing students who had a higher level of depression had a higher level of life stress, as well as a higher frequency of avoidance coping. Conversely, those who had a higher level of subjective well-being and psychological well-being had a lower level of life stress, as well as a lower frequency of avoidance coping. There were also significant positive correlations between psychological well-being and problem solving coping. The results showed that avoidance coping partially mediated the effects of life stress on depression, subjective well-being and psychological well-being. The results suggest that it is necessary to offer stress management programs to reduce avoidance coping, with additional consideration of life stress and coping strategies, to prevent depression and improve well-being among nursing students.
This paper describes a new face detection method that is a pre-processing algorithm for on-line face recognition. To complement the weakness of using only edge or rotor features from previous face detection method, we propose the two types of face detection method. The one is a combined method with edge and color features and the other is a center area color sampling method. To prevent connecting the people's face area and the background area, which have same colors, we propose a new adaptive edge detection algorithm firstly. The adaptive edge detection algorithm is robust to illumination variance so that it extracts lots of edges and breakouts edges steadily in border between background and face areas. Because of strong edge detection, face area appears one or multi regions. We can merge these isolated regions using color information and get the final face area as a MBR (Minimum Bounding Rectangle) form. If the size of final face area is under or upper threshold, color sampling method in center area from input image is used to detect new face area. To evaluate the proposed method, we have experimented with 2,100 face images. A high face detection rate of 96.3% has been obtained.
In the Korean seas, Sea Surface Temperature (SST) and Thermal Fronts (TF) were analyzed temporally and spatially during 8 years from 1993 to 2000 using NOAA/AVHRR MCSST. As the result of harmonic analysis, distributions of the mean SST were $10~25^{\circ}C,$ and generally SST decreased as latitude increased. SST increased in the order as following; the South Sea $(20\~23^{\circ}C),$ the East Sea $(17\~19^{\circ}C)$, and the West $Sea(13\~16^{\circ}C).$ Annual amplitudes and phases were $4\~11^{\circ}C,\;210\~240^{\circ}$ and high values were shown as following; the West Sea $(A1,\;9\~11^{\circ}C),$ the Northern East Sea $(A5,\;8\~9^{\circ}C),$ the Southern East Sea $(A4,\;6\~8^{\circ}C),$ the South Sea $(A3,\;6\~7^{\circ}C),$ the East China Sea $(A2,\;4\~7^{\circ}C)$ and phases; $A3\;(238\~242^{\circ}),\;A4\;(235\~240^{\circ}),\;A5\;(225\~235^{\circ}),\;Al\;(220\~230^{\circ}),\;A2\;(210\~235^{\circ}),$ respectively, Both of them were related inversely except the area A2, therefore the rest areas were affected by seasonal variations. TF were detected by Soble Edge Detection Method using gradient of SST. Consequently, TF were divided into 4 fronts; the Subpolar Front (SPF) based on the Cold Water Mass (low SST and salinity Subartic Water), resulting from the North Korea Cold Current (NKCC) and the East Sea Proper Cold Water in the middle and low layer, and the Warm Water Mass (high SST and salinity Subtropical Water), resulting from the Tsushima Warm Current (TWC) in area A4 and 5, the Kuroshio Front (KF) based on the Kuroshio Current (KC) and shelf waters in the East China Sea (ESC) in A2, and the South Sea Coastal Front (SSCF) based on the South Sea Coastal Water (SSCW) and TWC in A3. Also, the Tidal Front was weakly appeared in AI. TF located in steep slope of submarine topography. Annual amplitudes and phases were bounded in the same place, and these results should be considered to influence of seasonal variations.

It is an essential element for the establishment of image processing related systems to find the exact contour from the image of an arbitrary object. In particular, if a vision system is established to inspect the products in the automated production process, it is very important to detect the contours for standardized shapes such lines and curves. In this paper, we propose a prototype adaptive dynamic contour model, p-Snake with improved contour extraction algorithms by adding the prototype energy. The proposed method is to find the initial contour by applying the existing Snake algorithm after Sobel operation is performed for prototype analysis. Next, the final contour of the object is detected by analyzing prototypes such as lines and circles, defining prototype energy and using it as an additional energy item in the existing Snake function on the basis of information on initial contour. We performed experiments on 340 images obtained by using an environment that duplicated the background of an industrial site. It was found that even if objects are not clearly distinguished from the background due to noise and lighting or the edges being insufficiently visible in the images, the contour can be extracted. In addition, in the case of similarity which is the measure representing how much it matches the prototype, the prototype similarity of contour extracted from the proposed p-ACM is superior to that of ACM by 9.85%.
Traditionally, self-efficacy, burnout and engagement are defined as work related states of mind, and formally speaking, students are not employees. But, we assume that from a psychological perspective, student core activities can be considered work. Therefore, based on SCT(social cognitive theory), we examine the mediating role of self-efficacy in the prediction of student burnout and engagement, and also the mediation of burnout and engagement between self-efficacy and performance(GPA). There is no research to date wether there would be mediating role of these variables between past success and performance. These effects were analysed in the context of mediating role of the variables in a university in a sample of 438 students. This study utilized a convenience sample drawn from various major scholar area. Results of structural equation modeling analyses were consist with a full mediation model in which academic past success predicts self-efficacy, which in turn, predicts student burnout and engagement. Also our proposed model showed that burnout and engagement are partial or full mediating variables between self-efficacy and performance. Our study's findings provide evidence that engagement fully accounted for the relationship between self-efficacy and performance, and burnout partially explained the relationships. These findings aligns with the general theorizing supported by JD-R model and SCT(social cognitive theory). More specifically, it builds on the JD-R literature as it tests one of the proposed mechanisms in the relationship between job resources and work engagement. Implications of study are discussed, together with limitations and suggestions for future research.

In this paper, we propose a new method to extract palm lines and read it with simple techniques from one photo. We use morphological information and 8-directional contour tracking algorithm. From the digitalized image, we transform original RGB information to YCbCr color model which is less sensitive to the brightness information. The palm region is extracted by simple threshold as Y:65~255, Cb:25~255, Cr:130~255 of skin color. Noise removal process is then followed with morphological information of the palm such that the palm area has more than quarter of the pixels and the rate of width vs height is more than 2:1 and 8-directional contour tracking algorithm. Then, the stretching algorithm and Sobel mask are applied to extract edges. Another morphological information that the meaningful edges(palm lines) have between 10 and 20 pixels is used to exclude noise edges and boundary lines of the hand from block binarized image. Main palm lines are extracted then by labeling method. This algorithm is quite effective even reading the palm from a photographed by a mobile phone, which suggests that this method could be used in various applications.

In this paper, we present two types of vision algorithm that mobile robot has CCD camera. for obstacle avoidance. This is simple algorithm that compare with grey level from input images. Also, The mobile robot depend on image processing and move command from PC host. we has been studied self controlled mobile robot system with CCD camera. This system consists of digital signal processor, step motor, RF module and CCD camera. we used wireless RF module for movable command transmitting between robot and host PC. This robot go straight until recognize obstacle from input image that preprocessed by edge detection, converting, thresholding. And it could avoid the obstacle when recognize obstacle by line histogram intensity. Host PC measurement wave from various line histogram each 20 pixel. This histogram is (x, y) value of pixel. For example, first line histogram intensity wave from (0, 0) to (0, 197) and last wave from (280, 0) to (2n, 197. So we find uniform wave region and nonuniform wave region. The period of uniform wave is obstacle region. we guess that algorithm is very useful about moving robot for obstacle avoidance.
