The Role of Government Expenditure and Investment for MSME Growth: Empirical Study in Indonesia

  • In Indonesia, micro-, small- and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) are introduced to increase income by providing many easier jobs to improve economic growth. They have also been reported to be generally supportive of the local industry. The government policies on investment and expenditure have the ability to promote MSMEs and economic growth. Therefore, this research was conducted to analyze the theoretical background and empirical study to investigate government's role to promote MSMEs growth in Indonesia. The secondary data after the 2008 global financial crisis recorded quarterly from 2009 to 2019 Q3 were analyzed using the Ordinary Least Square (OLS) regression model. The results showed government expenditure has a positive and significant contribution to small- and medium-sized enterprises, but the effect was not significant for micro-businesses. Meanwhile, the investment sector was discovered to have a positive and significant effect on MSMEs. The policy implications of the Indonesian government are expected to focus on its expenditure's role as the most important factor for "social-economic protection of the community" through micro-enterprises, which are numerous and more attached to the real community economic-social life. Therefore, the existence of micro-businesses is very helpful for the lower classes despite their high vulnerability to crisis.

경영정보시스템의 성공과 실패에 대한 요인 분석 : 우리나라 제조업 분야의 중소기업을 중심으로 (Analysis of the Factors Affecting MIS Success : Focusing on the Small Business of Manufacturing Industry in Korea)

  • Not much attention has been paid to the characteristics of successful MIS in small business in Korea. This study compares the characteristics of successful MIS with those of less successful MIS of manufacturing industry in Korea in terms of micro level, macro level, and personal level. The micro level consists of those variables relating to the system development and maintenance while the macro level consists of the environmental variables relating to the information systems. The personal level measures a personal EDP experience. A mail survey was sent to small manufacturing companies to collect the data for the hypothesis tests. And 81 usable questionnaires were returned for data analysis. This study performs the validity of the categorization of variables in terms of three levels. The results shows that this categorization is appropriate but the personal level. As the personal experiences of EDP in Korea used to come up with those of the organization, the variables in the personal level have high correlations with those in the macro level in empirical testing. As the personal level, however, is different dimension from the macro level in theoretical aspect, the level is maintained separately throughout the study. The data were analyzed with MANOVA and two group discriminant analysis. The analyses reveal that the characteristics of successful MIS are different from those of less successful MIS in terms of three levels. And the micro level is more important than the macro level to develop successful MIS. That is because the organizations have relatively few experience in dealing with information systems, they have not developed unique information systems which are adjusted to their organizational characteristics. Those findings seems to be important determinants of success for the MIS in a firm.

  • The primary purpose of this paper is to make the management of small business aware of the potential and further, to assist their decision on purchasing and applying the personal computers to their business problems. With emphasis on the step by step expansion various computer hardware systems are reviewed, compared and evaluated in its price, micro-processor, memory size, software availability, etc. Using the concept of incremental costs, a method to evaluate software packages is developed. By this method the optimal system can be determined.

  • In this paper, studied on the one-chip design of low cost for the micro-stepping drive having 5-phase Pentagon Type winding. Micro-stepping method in order to eliminate effectively the resonant phenomena and to Increase the positional resolution. This paper proposed trapezoidal current wave- form for current control and provided design- method by using only one-chip of low cost. Therefore the drive will be simple and small size. Also the drive will have a lot of advantage at commercial business. Finally the above study has been implemented on the VHDL. Simulation has been performed to verify the PWM for micro-stepping drive.

Exploring Factors Affecting the Digitization of Blue Economy Micro- Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs): Indonesian Context

  • This study aims to identify the factors supporting and inhibiting the digitalization of blue economy MSMEs in Bitung, Indonesia. The literature shows little research on digitalization related to the blue economy in Southeast Asia, especially in Indonesia. This indicates that there is a large research gap related to digitalization and the blue economy in the Indonesian context. Data was collected through the distribution of questionnaires with open-ended questions to blue economy MSMEs. Data was also obtained from in-depth interviews with representatives of Aruna, an Indonesian company that focuses on simplifying the supply chain of fishery products by connecting small-scale fishers to the global market through technology. According to the study's findings, two primary factors-motivation to develop their business and efforts to maintain seller-buyer interaction-support SMEs' use of technology in the blue economy. However, digital literacy and technological infrastructure, such as the internet network, are the two main factors that become obstacles in the effort to digitize MSMEs in the blue economy. The role of the government is also a contingent factor that can strengthen the relationship between factors that support digitization and weaken the relationship between factors that hinder digitalization.

  • At present, tendency of ERP(Enterprise Resource Planning) enterprises is that many ERP enterprises from abroad are rushing into capture of small and medium enterprises at home actively. SAP Korea and Korean Oracle have already showed their new product targeting domestic market of small or medium standing enterprise, and more, even MS(Micro Soft) also rushes into this market in earnest. The domestic business circle of ERP should prepare countermeasure by raising the perfection of product and having good command of minute marketing strategy to survive from aggressive strategy of SMB market. In addition, about the computerization of main affairs of business, ordering developing process was general that developing staffs analysed the affairs of each department that needed computerization and construct according to the operation process by using different tools, but condition is changing that businesses themselves are purchasing business application package from expert soft program enterprise and construct. Therefore, in this study, I try to grasp the problem of management, and define a new process that can help for more efficient management by making it an object producing and management module of enterprise 'K' that is one of domestic small and medium enterprise and that is operating ERP at present. As well, through the analysis of affair related producing, we are aiming to prepare for establishment of target, its range, and making the standard of result evaluation.

  • 일반적으로 프랜차이즈는 영리를 추구하는 상업적 기업의 성격을 가지고 있으므로 영리를 추구하는 가맹본부의 입장에서는 사업의 성과를 최대한 높일 수 있도록 기업가 정신이 높고 사업 관련 역량이 높은 가맹점을 선호하게 되는데, 오히려 이러한 가맹점은 프랜차이즈에 대한 의존성이 상대적으로 낮다. 반면 기업가 정신도 부족하고 사업역량도 부족한 영세 가맹점의 경우에는 오히려 집중적인 가맹사업자의 관리가 필요하나 일부의 경우 능력이 부재한 가맹본부로부터 제대로 된 관리를 받지 못하고 실패하는 사례가 증가하고 있다. 최근 사회적 기업분야에서 확산되고 있는 소셜 프랜차이징이나 미소 프랜차이징은 이러한 측면에서 소규모 영세 가맹점을 대상으로 하는 프랜차이즈의 전략방향에 대한 많은 점을 시사한다는 전제하에 본 연구는 소셜 프랜차이징이 도시 영세민의 자활에 도움을 주고자 하는 목적에서 몇 가지 가설을 제안하고 있다.

Effect of Information Capital Readiness on Business Performance in Indonesian MSMEs: Does Online Market Orientation Matter?

  • The focus of this study is to investigate the mediating role of online market orientation on information capital readiness-business performance relationship. The construct of information capital readiness is rarely researched. The readiness here refers to the availability of information capital needed to support strategy execution. As quantitative research, this study employs the partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) to test the hypotheses. Data was collected using questionnaires from the owners/managers of the micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) in the East Java Province, Indonesia. As many as 433 respondents had participated. The result indicates that information capital readiness directly and positively affects business performance. Further analysis reveals that online market orientation partially mediates information capital readiness-business performance relationship. In conclusion, this study suggests that the owners/managers of the MSMEs should improve their information capital readiness to support online market orientation strategy so that it can improve their business performance. This is the first study that brings together the issues of information capital readiness and online market orientation as the antecedents of business performance in the Indonesian MSMEs research setting. The mediating role of online market orientation is rarely explored in previous studies.

  • The essential purpose of this study is to propose strategies for developing micro-, small-, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) to realize sustainable competitive advantage by applying the SWOT analysis method. Thus, the main problems investigated in this study are: a) around 60-70% of MSMEs in Kulonprogo regency do not yet have access or financing from banks; b) lack of knowledge of production technology; c) in general, MSMEs business actors are still incorporated legal entities; d) MSMEs do not have a good financial administration and management system; e) coordination between MSMEs stakeholders has not been integrated; f) limited facilities and infrastructure of MSMEs, primarily related to technological tools; and g) limited access to raw materials so that MSMEs often get low-quality raw materials. This study employed a survey method with questionnaires and interviews. By using the Slovin tools sampling technique, the number of samples was 39 MSMEs in Kulonprogo Regency, Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The results of this study confirmed that the Kulonprogo MSMEs should pay attention to seven aspects of business management to achieve sustainable competitive advantage. The seven aspects are: 1) business strategy; 2) human resources; 3) information technology; 4) products; 5) promotion; 6) cooperation; and 7) corporate social responsibility (CSR).

Business Strategies and Innovation for Survival During the COVID-19 Pandemic: Evidence from Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSME) in Indonesia

  • MSMEs encountered several issues during the COVID-19 pandemic, including decreased sales and capital, difficulties in distribution, trouble obtaining raw materials, decreased production, and employee layoffs. These issues posed a threat to the national economy. The final effect was the company's bankruptcy as a result of its failure to survive a pandemic, which led to the company's downfall. This research aims to find out and analyze MSMEs' business strategy and innovation to maintain their business during the COVID-19 pandemic in Indonesia. This research is qualitative. Researchers got data using interviews, observation, and documentation. The analysis of this research is descriptive. To draw customers during the COVID-19 pandemic, MSMEs use social media or digital marketing, followed by the delivery of orders, promotions, or discounts and the creation of freebies. MSMEs develop new products as part of their ongoing efforts to expand their businesses while upholding standards for quality, value, and customer service. They also adapt to changing consumer tastes and popular food trends while showcasing some of their most intriguing products.
