  • This study was carried out to analyze the effects of elapsed years and physical properties on invaded vegetation of forest road slope. For the study, 8 forest roads in Asan-si of Chungcheongnam-do were selected and 15 factors that might influence on vegetation invasion were analyzed. In generally, vegetation coverage of slope have increased with the elapsed years. But invasion species have decreased in the cut-slope and increased in fill-slope. There was no significant correlation between rate of vegetation coverage and elapsed years, but rate of vegetation coverage was strongly related with slope aspect. And the species of invasion vegetation affected mostly by the elapsed years and slope aspect among the physical properties.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the characteristics of soil erosion on the fill-slope of forest road by elapsed years after road construction. Thirteen plots were established on the fill-slope of the newly-constructed forest road, and surveyed for two years(1997~1998). In these plots, the data about soil erosion, surface runoff, vegetation coverage, slope structural characteristics and rainfall were collected. In 1997, the major causes for soil erosion were found by the correlation coefficients with the amount of surface runoff from the fill-slope, vegetation coverage, slope length, slope degree, total rainfall and max. 1 hour rainfall. But, in 1998, the major causes for soil erosion were vegetation coverage and slope degree. Using the stepwise multiple regression method, in 1997, the amount of soil erosion from the fill-slope was complexly expressed as a exponential function of statistically significant the amount of surface runoff from the fill-slope, total rainfall, slope degree of fill-slope and vegetation coverage, but, in 1998, simply expressed as a exponential function of vegetation coverage.

  • This study was conducted to improve the stability of cut slopes of forest roads in granitic weathered soil areas. The study area is a national forest road (road length 28.48 km) in Pyeongchang-gun, Gangwon-do. After data collection, a statistical analysis was performed using IBM SPSS (Ver. 26.0). First, the correlation analysis showed that structure, slope position, soil erosion, slope, and aspect (N, S) were correlated with vegetation coverage (p < 0.05). Elapsed years, slope distance, and aspect (E, W) were found to have no correlation with vegetation coverage. (p > 0.05) Second, one-way ANOVA and Kruskal-Wallis test results showed that vegetation coverage was worse when the slope was located at the top or the middle of the slope than at the bottom of the slope. In addition, the site with sheathing and gabions showed good vegetation coverage when compared with the site without structures. In the case of soil erosion, areas with severe damage and moderate damage showed worse vegetation coverage. Therefore, it is necessary to strengthen the slope angle of the cut soil of the granitic weathered soil area from 1 : 0.5 - 1.2 to 1 : 0.8 - 1.5. In addition, structures such as sheathing and gabions should be installed on granitic weathered land.

  • This study is a basic research with the aim of developing the method of judging the leakage zone by grasping the habitat characteristic of agricultural reservoir slope in inhabiting characteristics appear differently according to natural inhabiting environment. To this end, this study is intending to investigate slope vegetation using a quadrat technique at Sinheung reservoir located at Gwangsi-myeon, Yesan-gun, Chungnam, and to perform the analysis of importance value using relative frequency and relative coverage, etc. Also, this study intended to present the necessity of having to consider the eco-system of the relevant region in time of a reservoir slope afforestation for the time to come by suggesting that the reservoir slope vegetation after a stable period becomes similar to the regional vegetation by comparing this study result with the existing research which carried out the analysis of importance value of forest vegetation for Yesan Region. The reservoir slope vegetation is similar to the indicator species which appear in the regional forest vegetation, so there was a need to select afforestation species in the light of this in time of slope afforestation. As a result of the analysis of the importance value, this study grasped that there was an emergence characteristic similar to the vegetation at a birthplace of a forest fires because growth and development of forest trees, and perennial plants were restricted by annually implemented brush-cutting work, etc.; however, indigo plant and bush clover, etc. were found to show the characteristic differing from this. Consequently, this study was able to confirm that there is the necessity of having to create the Importance Value Table suited for reservoir slopes by region through a lot more data construction in the near future.

  • In case of the national roads which is opened in the past, there are carried out the expansion and improvement for enlargement of the traffic demand by industrial development and safety road operation to narrow of road width and serious change of the road alignment with effect of topography and graphical features of a mountain. A protection method using vegetation in the cut-slope has been constructed for harmony of ambient environment after cutting the slope recently. But it requires a study because the surface lose and the failure have been occurred in the large cut-slope which is covered by vegetation. In this study it was presented a countermeasure and examined a stability of contained uncertainty in the cut-slope according to the failure example of the cut-slope which is covered by vegetation. The additional research will be necessary against the development of the investigation technique which executes the stability investigation of the cut-slope which is covered by vegetation.

  • This study reviews the engineering properties of vegetation as one of all factors to select vegetation species for slope protection. The vegetation species mainly applied in domestic soil slope protection were inspected, and the root properties such as root pattern, root length, root weight, were analyzed. And then direct shear tests on undisturbed fine sand including roots were performed to review the effect of root reinforcement. From these analyses, it was concluded that the engineering properties of vegetation should be considered to select vegetation species for slope protection.

  • This study was carried out to estimate the physical and chemical soil characteristics in highway cutting slope areas. The soil was sampled in cutting area and natural vegetation area that was located in the upper areas of the highway cutting slope. The average total soil depth, bulk density, and soil hardness were bad in the highway cutting slope sites. The sandy loam was the most soil texture in the study area. The concentration of soil organic matter and nitrogen were very low in all highway cutting areas. The concentration of exchangeable cations was similar between the highway cutting slope and the natural vegetation sites in each highway. The soil pH was higher in highway cutting slope areas than in natural vegetation sites. In conclusion, chemical and physical properties of soil were bad in the cutting slope than in the natural vegetation area because of the loss of soil by cutting of slope area and less organic matter input by less vegetation in the highway cutting slope area. We should employ possible method to reduce the loss of soil, and compost and fertilization treatment could help to increase soil nutrient content in the cutting slope area.

  • This research was studied to inverstigate the effect of plant mixtures and tackifibers on the vegetation of slope sites. 5 type plant mixtures(tree type, forest type, native herbaceous plant type, foreign herbaceous plant type, and cool-season turfgrass type) and 3 different tackifibers (Guar tackifibers, Polyarchrylamide tackifibers and Cellulose methyl starch) were treated with 3 replications on the experimented slope. The germination and coverage rate were high on native and foreign herbaceous plants and low on cool-season turfgrass, forest and tree types. We could notice that herbaceous plant types were effective on the vegetation of slope in the short term. Because tree or forest type vegetations similar to natural plant habitat, however, were preferable on slope vegetation in the long term, tree species of high germination rate should be selected in this experiment for tree or forest type slope vegetations. Tackifiber treatments increased the germination rate during the early treatment stage. However, the effect of tackifiber treatment on germination rate was decreased on the elapse of time. Guar tackifiber treatment was most effective on the vegetation of slope. As far as soil erosion control was concerned, all tackifiber treatments were effective compared to control.

  • In this study, stability of the new gabion system with vegetation base materials was analysed. New gabion system with vegetation base materials is a new approach which has been developed to achieve lope stabilization and revegetation of forest road cut-slope by making the best use of advantages of gabion systems with vegetation base materials. Results from stability analysis are as follows. For the soil density, the angle of internal friction and unit weight of the rock fill was assumed to be $1.90g/cm^3$, $30^{\circ}$ and $2.30t/m^3$, respectively, the slope stability analysis showed that the new gabion system couldn't require any poles to fix it up, and could keep stable during both rainy and dry seasons. As the results of checks against overturning and sliding, the retaining wall with. the new gabion system could produce suitable factors of safety for overturning and sliding. Vegetation established on the surface of the new gabion systems indirectly can help to increase slope stability by prevention of surface erosion. Consequently, the new gabion system with vegetation base materials could achieve the desired effect on slope stabilization as much as existing gab ion system could do, and could promote rapid establishment of vegetation on cut-slopes.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of vegetation on the cutting slope applied by vegetation system in the whole land. The engineering characteristics of slopes were investigated using the face mapping and physical tests. From the statistical methods, a relationship between a geologic stratum and degree of covering was independent. Therefore, the afforestation of slope was affected more by condition of vegetation as direction and opening of joints, and a topsoil state than by conventional classification of layer. It was concluded that the adjustable vegetation on the slope considering condition of geometric shape of slope, joint data and spontaneous type could make useful early afforestation.
