  • A wire-plate discharge system with a slit barrier has been proposed and investigated experimentally by focusing on the discharges on the slit barrier and ozone generation characteristics. This wire-plate discharge system with a slit barrier can generate an intensive corona discharges, and produce corona discharge twice, once from the corona wire electrode and second time from the surface and the slits of the slit dielectric barrier. As a result this propose wire-plate discharge system with the slit barrier can produce greatly increased ozone than without the slit barrier. This type of wire-plate discharge system with the slit barrier could be used for effective ozone generation as a means with retard to the removal of pollutant gas

  • In this study, it has been considered that the TEM wave is incident on the transverse slit in the upper plate of a short-ended parallel-plate waveguide (PPW). An equivalent slit admittance and complex power for the case of narrow slit are obtained. The conditions for the slit voltage and the complex power in case of the maximum coupling through the slit with a nearby scatterer exterior the PPW are checked.

  • The problem of electromagnetic coupling through a slit in a flanged parallel-plate waveguide is considered. The equivalent slit admittance associated with reactive powers near the coupling slit inside and outside the waveguide has been obtained. The maximum coupling mechanism for the case of narrow slit has been quantitatively discussed. The effects of various geometrical parameters such as guide height, slit width, and slit of offset on the radiation characteristics of the geometry have been investigated.

  • In this paper, a numerical model to analyze the performance of a vertical slit-type wave absorber is developed under the assumption of inviscid water waves. The formulation combines the linear potential theory with a semi-empirical description of the eddy-shedding at a slit-type wave absorber. We investigated the reflection coefficients over a wide frequency range for a vertical slit-type wave absorber both with and without a solid rear wall. Model test was conducted at KRISO' s two dimensional wave tank to validate the theoretical results. It is found that the agreement between theoretical results and experimental data is surprisingly good. We found that the wave absorbing system using a vertical slit plate has sufficient potentials for breakwaters for ocean development.

  • Corona discharge and ozone generation characteristics of a slit dielectric barrier discharge type wire-plate plasma reactor with a third electrode have been investigated. When a third electrode is installed on a slit of the slit barrier, where an intense corona discharge occurs, it is found that a significantly increased ozone output could be obtained. This, however, indicates that the third electrode can activate the corona discharges both of the discharge wire and the slit of the slit barrier in the plasma reactor. As a result, a thin stainless wire, used as the third electrode has a strong effect to influence the corona discharge of the slit and corona wire, especially to the negative corona discharge. Higher amounts of the output ozone and ozone yield, about 1.27 and 1.29 times for the negative corona discharge, can be obtained with the third electrode, which reveals the effectiveness of the third electrode.

  • The problem of electromagnetic coupling between a slit fed by a flanged parallel-plate waveguide(PPW) and a slit in an infinite nearby conducting screen parallel to the flanged ground conductor is studied as a simplified problem for a near-field scanning microscopy(NSM). The method of moments isused to solve the coupled integral equations for the electric field distributions over the slits. The performance of the proposed apparatus as an NSM is tested by examining the effects of some geometrical parameters on the equivalent slit admittance and coupled powers through the slits.

  • In this study, the characteristics of turbulent flow and collection efficiency for an one-stage electrostatic precipitator(ESP) with slit type collecting electrode for urban railway underground tunnels were obtained using computational fluid dynamics(CFD) commercial code FLUENT 6.3 and lab-scale experiments. The electrostatic precipitator was operated under high gas velocity(3~12m/s). Five different designs of collecting electrode, flat plate-type and a slit-type of 3mm, 5mm, 7mm and 10mm slit width and four various gas velocity(3, 6, 9, and 12m/s) were used and applied. A standard k-${\varepsilon}$ model in CFD commercial code FLUENT 6.3 was used for flow simulation. The flow simulation results showed that the turbulent intensity of flat plate-type was higher than slit-type under all gas velocity conditions and also the turbulent intensity of flat plate-type was increased continuously, but in case of slit-type was maintained at constant range. And, the turbulent intensity was decreased according to increasing of slit width. The experimental results showed that the collection efficiency of slit-type was higher than flat plate-type under all gas velocity conditions. And, over 6m/s gas velocity condition, the collection efficiency of 5mm and 7mm was highest, when compared to 3mm and 10mm.

  • The rigid steel connections were suffered severe damage because of low rotational capacity during earthquakes. Hence, many investigations have been conducted on the connections of steel structures. As a solution, steel slit dampers were employed at the connections to prevent brittle failure of connections and damage of main structural members. Slit damper is a plate or a standard section with a number of slits in the web. The objective of this paper is to improve the seismic performance of steel slit dampers in the beam-to-column connection using finite element modeling. With reviewing the previous investigations, it is observed that slit dampers were commonly fractured in the end parts of the struts. This may be due to the low participation of struts middle parts in the energy dissipation. Thus, in the present study slit damper with elliptic slits is proposed in such a way that end parts of struts have more energy absorption area than struts middle parts. A parametric study is conducted to investigate the effects of geometric parameters of elliptic slit damper such as strut width, strut height and plate thickness on the seismic performance of the beam-to-column connection. The stress distribution is improved along the struts in the proposed slit damper with elliptic slits and the stress concentration is decreased in the end parts of struts. The average contributions of elliptic slit dampers, beam and other sections to the energy dissipation are about 97.19%, 2.12% and 0.69%, respectively.

  • In this study a seismic retrofit scheme for a building structure was presented using steel plate slit dampers. The energy dissipation capacity of the slit damper used in the retrofit was verified by cyclic loading test. Genetic algorithm was applied to find out the optimum locations of the slit dampers satisfying the target displacement. The seismic retrofit of the model structure using the slit dampers was compared with the retrofit with enlarging shear walls. A simple damper distribution method was proposed using the capacity spectrum method along with the damper distribution pattern proportional to the inter-story drifts. The validity of the simple story-wise damper distribution procedure was verified by comparing the results of genetic algorithm. It was observed that the capacity-spectrum method combined with the simple damper distribution pattern leaded to satisfactory story-wise distribution of dampers compatible with the optimum solution obtained from genetic algorithm.

  • In this paper, the problem of electromagnetic coupling between a slit fed by a flanged parallel-plate waveguide (FPPW) and a nearby conducting strip parallel to the slit is studied as a simplified problem for a near-field scanning microscopy (NSM). The characteristics of the FPPW are investigated from the results for the variations of the equivalent slit admittance, the reactive powers near the slit inside and outside the FPPW, the magnitude and phase of the voltage reflection coefficient of the TEM wave. The performance of the proposed apparatus as an NSM is tested by examining the effects of various geometrical parameters such as guide height, slit width, strip width, distance between slit and strip, and the ratio of slit width to guide height on the magnitude and phase of the voltage reflection coefficient of the TEM wave. From the results for the voltage reflection coefficient against the strip offset from the slit, it is found that a slit in the FPPW with smaller guide height gives higher scanning resolution and the phase variation is more sensitive than the magnitude variation.
